8.1 Taken upon a base art thou. Thee for God, the Lord of light.

Here, O far-reaching God, is Thy Soma, Thy provision. Guard it from injury. Let them not harm thee.

8.2 Ne'er art Thou fruitless, O Mighty God; ne'er dost Thou desert Thy worshipper.

But now, O Liberal Lord, Thy bounty is poured forth ever more and more. Thee for God, the Lord of light.

8.3 Never art Thou neglectful: Thou guardest both races, those of heaven and those of earth, with Thy care.

The undying bliss is established in the heavens. Thee for God, the Lord of light.

8.4 The sacrifice obtains God's acceptance. Be graciously inclined to us, O Lord of light.

Hitherward let Thy favour be directed and be our best deliverer from trouble. Thee for God, the Lord of light.

8.5 This is thy Soma draught, O bright Lord of light: accept it.

To this mine utterance, O ye men, give credence: what good the man and wife obtain by praying:

a manly son is born and gathers riches, and thrives for ever sinless in the dwelling.

8.6 Fair wealth, O God the Light-giver, to-day, to-morrow, fair wealth produce for us each day that passes.

May we, through this our song, be happy gainers, O God, of a fair and spacious habitation.

8.7 Taken upon a base art thou.

Giver of delight art thou. Giver of joy art thou: vouchsafe me joy.

Speed thou the sacrifice, speed thou the lord of the sacrifice to win his share. Thee for God, the Light-giver.

8.8 Taken upon a base art thou.

Thou art a good protector, firmly stablished. To the Great Creator be reverential homage. Thee for the Lord of all.

This is thy home: Thee for the Lord of all.

8.9 Taken upon a base art thou.

May it be mine to prosper the libations of thee, O radiant Soma, strong drop, mingled with thy waters.

8.10 Thou art the Creator, the Mighty Giver: may I obtain from Thy bounty a son who shall himself become a father.

8.11 Taken upon a base art thou.

United with the Soma, ye are parched corn offered for God's sake, a food for the steeds to feed on.

8.12 That draught of thine which winneth cows or horses, offered with sacrificial text and lauded with chanted hymns and songs of adoration: of that permitted do I take permitted.

8.13 For sin against God, this is atonement. For sin against mankind, this is atonement.

For sin against parents, this is atonement. For sin against oneself, this is atonement.

For every sort of sin this is atonement. The sin that I have knowingly committed, the sin that unawares I have committed, of all that wickedness, with God's forgiveness, this is the atonement.

8.14 We with our bodies have again united, with lustre, vital sap, and happy spirit.

Giver of boons, may God the Fashioner grant us riches and smooth whate'er was injured in our body.

8.15 Lead us with thought to wealth in kine, O Mighty God, to princes, Lord of Bounty! and to welfare.

Lead Thou us on to God-inspired devotion, to the favour of God, who alone merits worship. All-hail!

8.16 We with our bodies have again united, with lustre, vital sap, and happy spirit.

Giver of boons, may God the Fashioner grant us riches and smooth whate'er was injured in our body.

8.17 May this please God the Light-giver, the Liberal Ordainer, the Creator, the Guardian of treasure, the Radiant, the Fashioner, the All-Pervading: blessing him with children, may He grant store of riches to the Sacrificer.

8.18 O angels, we have made your seats easy of access, you who have come to this gathering.

Bearing and bringing hitherward the treasures from God, grant to this man, by God's leave, abundant riches. All hail!

8.19 The willing angels whom, O God, Thou hast brought hither, send them to their own dwelling-place.

As ye have witnessed this offering, approach the air, the warmth, the light of heaven.

8.20 Here, as this sacrifice proceedeth, have we elected thee, O flame, to be our Hotar.

Special have been thine offerings and thy labour. Well knowing sacrifice, as sage, come near us.

8.21 Do ye, O angels, discoverers of the Pathway, go forward on the path when ye have found it.

O God, Lord and Master of the Spirit, bestow, All-hail! this sacrifice on the wind.

8.22 Go, Sacrifice, to the sacrifice: seek thou the lord of the sacrifice, seek thine own home. All-hail!

Lord of the sacrifice, this is thy sacrifice, followed by many heroes, loud with hymns of praise. Accept it thou. All-hail!

8.23 Become no serpent thou, become no viper.

God the King hath made a spacious pathway, a pathway for the sun wherein to travel.

Where no way was, He made a way, and warned afar whate'er afflicts the spirit.

To God be reverential homage! The snare of punishment beneath our feet is trampled.

8.24 The waters, the face of the fire, have I entered, repelling evil spirits.

Offer the fuel in each home, O flame. Let thy tongue dart, All-hail! to meet the butter.

8.25 Thy essence is in the flood, within the waters. With thee let plants and waters be commingled,

that, O Lord of sacrifice, we may adore Thee with singing praise and telling forth our homage. All-hail!

8.26 This, O celestial waters, is your offspring. Support him dearly loved and gently nurtured.

This is thy station, O Soma; therein bring happiness and ward off evil.

8.27 O restless purifying bath, thou glidest onward restlessly.

May I, with God's aid, remove the stain of sin against God, and wash away with mortals' help the wrong that hath been done to men.

Preserve me, O God, from injury, from the loud-roaring demon foe.

8.28 Let, still unborn, the ten-month calf move with the following after-birth.

Even as the wind is moving, as the gathered flood of ocean moves,

so may this ten-month calf come forth together with the after-birth.

8.29 O thou who hast a womb of gold and offspring meet for sacrifice,

him with all limbs unbroken have I brought together with his dam. All-hail!

8.30 Multiform, rich in wondrous operation, the strong juice hath enrobed itself with greatness.

Let the worlds praise her, uniped and biped, three-footed and four-footed and eight-footed. All-hail!

8.31 Verily, best of guardians hath he in whose dwelling-place ye gather, O Maruts, giants of the sky.

8.32 By God's command may Heaven and Earth, the Mighty Pair, besprinkle this our sacrifice,

and feed us full with nourishments.

8.33 O overcomer of the Obstructor, turn to us: may the voice of the pressing-stone draw Thine attention hitherward.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Mighty One, for the sixteenfold libation, thee.

This is a dwelling-place for thee. For the Mighty One, for the sixteenfold libation, thee.

8.34 O Mighty God, listen to our songs of praise.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Mighty One, for the sixteenfold libation, thee.

This is a dwelling-place for thee. For the Mighty One, for the sixteenfold libation, thee.

8.35 Mighty and unresisted is the Lord; let the songs of the seers and the sacrifice performed by men be raised to Him.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Mighty One, for the sixteenfold libation, thee.

This is a dwelling-place for thee. For the Mighty One, for the sixteenfold libation, thee.

8.36 Than whom there is none other born more mighty, who hath pervaded all existing creatures:

God the Creator, rejoicing in His creation, He maintains the three great lights.

8.37 God, the chief Lord and Sovran, hath made this draught the first and foremost.

I, after, partake of what is left. May speech, rejoicing, be refreshed, All-hail! together with the breath of life.

8.38 O God the Radiant, skilled in Thy task, pour lustre and hero strength on us,

granting me wealth and affluence.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Radiant One, thee, for splendour.

This is thy home. For the Radiant One, thee, for splendour.

Thou, O Radiant One, art splendid amid all lights. May I among mankind be bright with lustre.

8.39 Taken upon a base art thou. For God the Mighty, thee, for mighty strength.

This is thy home. For the Mighty, thee, for might.

Thou art the Mightiest, O Mighty God. Among mankind I fain would be most mighty.

8.40 His herald rays are seen afar, refulgent o'er the world of men, like flames of fire that burn and blaze.

Taken upon a base art thou. For God the Light-giver, the Bright One, thee.

This is thy home. For God the Light-giver, the Bright One, thee.

From Thee comes all brightness, O God the Light-giver. May I among mankind be bright.

8.41 His bright rays bear the sun aloft, the sign of the God who knoweth all that lives, that all may look at it.

Taken upon a base art thou. For God the Light-giver, the Bright One, thee. This is thy home.

8.42 Smell thou the vat. Let Soma drops pass into thee, O Mighty One.

Return again with store of sap. Pour for us wealth in thousands, thou with full broad streams and floods of milk.

Let riches come again to me.

8.43 Delightful, honoured, loveable, splendid, shining one, inviolable, full of sap, the Mighty One, most glorious:

these are thy names, O Cow: bear witness that I act righteously.

8.44 O Mighty God, ward off our foes, humble the men who challenge us:

send down to nether darkness him who seeks to do us injury.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Mighty One, Averter of foes, thee.

This is thy home. For the Mighty One, Averter of foes, thee.

8.45 Let us invoke to-day, to aid our labour, the Lord of speech, the thought-swift Maker of all things.

May He hear kindly all our invocations, who gives all bliss for aid, whose works are righteous.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Mighty One, Maker of all, thee.

This is thy home. For the Mighty One, Maker of all, thee.

8.46 With strengthening libation, O Maker of all, Thou art the undying Guardian.

The people of old time bowed down before Him because the Mighty One alone is meet for worship.

Taken upon a base art thou. For the Mighty One, Maker of all, thee. This is thy home.

8.47 Taken upon a base art thou.

I take thee, lord of the Gayatri, for the Radiant One. For the Mighty One take I thee, the lord of the Trishtup.

I take thee, lord of the Jagati, for the Lord of all. Anushtup is the song that sings thy praises.

8.48 I stir thee for the fall of cloud-borne waters. I stir thee for the fall of streams that gurgle. I stir thee for the fall of those that gladden. I stir thee for the fall of those who are most lovely. I stir thee for the fall of those that are the sweetest. I stir thee for the waters' fall; I stir thee, pure one, in the pure, in the day's form, in the sun's beams.

8.49 The sun's majestic form is shining brightly, the pure, the pure's preceder, Soma Soma's.

Whatever name, invincible, stimulating, is thine, O Soma, for that name I take thee.

All-hail to Soma, unto thee, O Soma.

8.50 O radiant Soma, eagerly draw nigh to the well-loved offering.

O radiant Soma, willingly go to the offering that is made for God.

Go, radiant Soma, as our friend, to the offering of all the devout.

8.51 Here is delight: enjoy yourselves; here surety, surety of your own. All-hail!

Loosing the suckling to his dam, the suckling as he milks his dam,

may he maintain the growth of wealth among us. All-hail!

8.52 Thou art the Session's happy termination.

We have attained the light and hope for everlasting life.

We have gone up from earth to sky, have found heaven and light.

8.53 O Mighty God, our champion in the fight, drive away the man who fain would war with us, drive him far from us.

Welcome to him, concealed afar, shall be the lair that he hath found.

So may the Mighty rend our foes on every side, rend them, O Hero, everywhere.

Earth! Ether! Sky! May we be rich in offspring, rich in brave sons and rich in food to feed us.

8.54 Soma when contemplated, a provision of the Supreme Lord. In uttered speech, a gift of the Creator. Food when approached. In the partition, a gift of the Light-giver. In consecration, a gift of the Maker of all. In the purchasing cow, a gift of the Nourisher.

8.55 As a gift of the Mighty, whom the Maruts serve, it stands ready for the sale; when bought and sold, a gift of the Lord; when purchased, a gift of the Friend; when on the Sacrificer's thigh it resteth, a gift of the All-Pervading; when brought on the barrow, a gift of the All-Pervading, the Observer of men.

8.56 Soma when come; when seated on the platform, a gift of the All-Seeing; in the sacred fire-place, a gift of the Radiant; upon the sacrificial barrow, a gift of the Mighty; when deposited for pounding, a gift of God.

8.57 When offered in the scattered fragments, a gift of the Lord of all; when it is filled and swelling in the waters, a gift of the All-Pervading, the guard of those who seek His pleasure; in pressing, a gift of the Lord of judgement; in collection, a gift of the All-Pervading;

what time they cleanse and purify it, a gift of the Lord of the winds; when cleansed, the bright; the bright with milk about it; the Manthin commingled with the meal of barley.

8.58 When drawn away in beakers, a gift of the Lord of all; when uplifted for the fire-oblation, life; when offered, a gift of the Healer; when carried back, a gift of the Lord of the winds; when beheld, a gift of the Observer of men; a drink, when they drink it; and when deposited, an offering made in praise of men.

8.59 A river, when ready for the cleansing bath; the sea, when it is carried to the waters; water, when it is plunged beneath it.

To the Most Mighty hath it gone, most manly in vigour, by whose strength the worlds were established,

who rules as Lord resistless in His grandeur, God the All-Pervading and All-Seeing, at the prayer of morning.

8.60 To God, to the sky the sacrifice hath gone: let blessings come thence to me!

To men, to the air the sacrifice hath gone: let blessings come thence to me!

To the earth the sacrifice hath gone: let blessings come thence to me!

Whatever sphere the sacrifice hath reached, may wealth come thence to me.

8.61 The threads that have been spun, the four-and-thirty, which establish this our sacrifice with the due offering,

of these I join together what is broken. All-hail! to God go the warm milk oblation!

8.62 Spread far and wide is the sacrifice's milking: eightfold along the heaven hath it extended.

Pour, Sacrifice! in plenty on mine offspring: may I obtain prosperity for ever. All-hail!

8.63 O Soma, send wealth in gold and steeds and heroes. All-hail! Bring hitherward booty in cattle.
