Plain text of Book 40

Enveloped by the Lord must be this All, each thing that moves on earth. With what He gives, be content and enjoy it. Covet no wealth of any man.

Doing righteous works here, one may wish to live a hundred years. There is no way for thee but this: so evil deeds cleave not to man.

Dark are the realms enwrapt in blinding gloom, the abode of the followers of Satan. To them, when life on earth is done, depart the men who destroy their own souls.

He is One, unchanging, swifter than thought; the angels cannot overtake Him, speeding on before them. He, standing still, outstrips the others running. By His command the wind establishes action.

He is far distant; He is near. He encompasses all that is, within and without, by His knowledge and power.

The man who beholds all creatures and all things that be as the creation of God, and sees all beings as servants of the One Lord like himself, thenceforth doubts no longer and is not anxious.

When a man clearly knows that all things that are exist by God alone, what bewilderment, what grief is there for him who sees the One God alone!

God is the Bright, the Bodiless, without wound, without sinew, the Pure which evil hath not pierced. Far-sighted, wise, encompassing, self-subsisting, He hath prescribed purposes, as propriety demands, through the everlasting years.

Deep into shade of blinding gloom fall those who worship Nature as if it were eternal. They sink to darkness deeper yet who are intent on worshipping a created being as divine.

One fruit, they say, comes of the one, another of the other. Thus from the sages have we heard, who have declared this lore to us.

The man who knows both the coming-to-be and the passing-away of all things, through remembering the passing-away overcomes the fear of death, and through remembering that God created, gains endless life in the Garden.

To blinding darkness go the men who follow ignorance. The men who boast of knowledge without righteous works enter darkness that is darker still.

Different is the fruit, they say, of knowledge, and different the fruit of ignorance. Thus from the sages have we heard, who have declared this lore to us.

The man who knoweth well these two, knowledge and righteous action, combined, is saved from perishing by righteous action, and by knowledge of God gaineth endless life.

May my breath return to its Creator; let my body return to the dust. Mind, remember thou; remember thou my station; remember thou my deeds.

By a goodly path lead us to blessings, O God, Thou who knowest all our works and wisdom. Remove the sin that makes us stray and wander; most ample adoration will we bring Thee.

The face of Truth is hidden by a vessel of golden light; unveil it to us, O God, that we may see the Truth. The sun is Thy sign, and I am Thy servant. Glory to God, Lord of the heavens and the earth.
