Plain text of Book 4
4.1 We have reached this earth's place of sacrificing, the place wherein the angels delighted.
Crossing by Rik, by Saman, and by Yajus, may we rejoice in food and growth of riches.
Gracious to me be these waters from the sky! Protect me, O blade of grass. O knife, forbear to harm him.
4.2 The life-giving waters shall make us bright and shining; cleansers of holy oil, with oil shall they cleanse us.
For they bear off all defilement. I rise up from them purified and brightened.
The form of consecration and of fervour art thou. I put thee on, the kind and blissful, maintaining an agreeable appearance.
4.3 The milk of the Great Ones art thou. Giver of splendour art thou: bestow on me the gift of splendour.
Pupil of the eye art thou. The giver of eyes art thou. Give me the gift of vision.
4.4 May God, Lord of thought, purify me! May the Lord of speech purify me! May God the Light-giver purify me with the perfect strainer, with the rays of the sun!
O Lord of purification, who art by the strainer purified, with what desire I purify myself, may I accomplish it.
4.5 We come to Thee for precious wealth, O Lord, as the offering proceeds.
O Lord, we call on Thee to give the blessings that wait on devotion.
4.6 Hail! from mind the sacrifice. Hail! from the spacious firmament. Hail! from heaven and earth. Hail! from the wind I seize. Hail!
4.7 To resolution, to purpose, to God the Radiant, hail! All-hail to wisdom, and to mind, and to God the Radiant!
All-hail to consecration, to fervour, to God the Radiant! Hail to eloquence, to the Nourisher, and to God the Radiant!
Ye vast, all-beneficial waters, ye heaven and earth and spacious air between them,
let us extol God, Lord of the sacred word, with offering. All-hail!
4.8 May every mortal man elect the friendship of the guiding God.
Each one solicits Him for wealth: let him seek fame to prosper him.
4.9 Counterparts of the Rik and the Saman are ye. I touch you. Protect me till the sacrifice be ended.
Thou art a place of refuge. Give me refuge. Forbear to harm me.
4.10 Strength of the Angirases art thou. Wool-soft, bestow thou strength on me.
Thou art the garment-knot of the Soma. Thou art the refuge of the sacrifice, the refuge of the one who offers.
Make the crops produce abundant grain.
Stand up erect, O Tree. Protect me from harm until this sacrifice be ended.
4.11 Prepare ye the vow-food. The sacred fire serves the priesthood and the sacrifice; the tree is holy.
For aid we meditate on divine Intelligence, most merciful, free-giving, bringing worship. May it guide us gently, as we would.
Favour us, O angels, endowed with mind and intellectual might! Hail to them! May they be our protectors by God's leave.
4.12 Waters that we have drunk! become refreshing, become auspicious draughts within our belly.
Free from all sin and malady and sickness, may they be pleasant to our taste, blessed ones, strengthened by the eternal Order.
4.14 O God, watch Thou well. May we take joy in most refreshing sleep.
Protect us with unceasing care. From slumber waken us again.
4.15 Thought hath returned to me, and life; my breath and soul have come again.
May God, the Guardian of all men, keep our bodies unscathed and preserve us from misfortune and dishonour.
4.16 Thou, O God, art the guardian of sacred vows among mankind, meet for praise at holy rites.
Grant this much, O Bountiful One! bring yet more. God the Light-giver, who giveth wealth, hath given treasure unto us.
4.17 This is thy form, O bright one, this thy lustre. Combine with this thy form and go to splendour.
Impetuous art thou, upheld by mind, and the sacrifice loveth thee.
4.18 Moved by the impulse of the One whose impulsion is true, may I obtain a prop to stay my body.
Pure art thou, glistening art thou, enduring, dear to all the devoted.
4.19 Thought art thou, mind, intelligence, the guerdon, royal, worshipful. Succeed for us in going forth, succeed for us in thy return.
May God the Friend keep thee from straying. May the Guardian of paths guard thy pathways, for the sake of God the Mighty, whose watchfulness is over all.
4.20 Go thou to the Soma-seller. To the Soma go, for the sake of the Mighty God.
May God bring thee back. Return safely with the Soma as thy friend.
4.21 Thou art bounteous, thou art boundless, thou art radiant, thou art awesome, thou art bright as the moon.
May God vouchsafe thee rest and comfort! May He look on thee with favour.
4.22 On the head of the earth I sprinkle thee, on the earth's place of sacrifice.
Footstep of plenty art thou, filled with fatness. Hail!
Rejoice in us. Thy kinship is in us. In thee are riches.
Mine be riches! Let us not be deprived of abundant riches. Thine, thine are riches.
4.23 I with my thought have joined with the far-sighted guerdon.
Steal not my life. I will not steal thine. May I, in thy sight, find for myself a hero son.
4.24 Tell Soma this for me: This is thy share allied with the Gayatri.
For me say this to Soma: This is thine allotted Trishtup share.
Tell Soma this for me: This is thy share allied with the Jagati.
Tell Soma this for me: Win thou sole lordship of the metres' names.
Ours art thou: pure thy juice for draught. Let the separators pick thee out.
4.25 I sing my song of praise to Him, God the Light-giver, Lord between heaven and earth, strong with the wisdom of the wise, of true impulsion, wealth-giver, the well-beloved, thoughtful Sage;
to Him at whose impulsion shone aloft in heaven the splendid light.
Most wise, the Golden-handed hath measured the sky with skilled design.
For living creatures, thee. Let living creatures breathe after thee. Breathe after living creatures.
4.26 Thee who art pure, with what is pure I purchase, the bright with bright, the enduring with the enduring.
The Sacrificer keep thy cow. Let thy gold pieces be with us.
Form of fervour art thou, a gift of the Creator. With the most noble animal art thou purchased. May I increase with thousandfold abundance.
4.27 As a friend, the giver of good friends, approach us!
Take thy seat on the right thigh of the Sacrificer, yearning on yearning, pleasing on the pleasing.
These are your prices for the Soma purchase. Keep them securely, let them never fail you.
4.28 Keep me, O God, from unrighteous conduct: make me a sharer in the path of goodness.
I, following the righteous, have arisen with longer life, with a good life before me.
4.29 Now have we entered on the path that leads to bliss without a foe,
the path whereon a man escapes all enemies and gathers wealth.
4.30 Thou art the skin of the earth. Sit on the lap of the earth.
God the Mighty hath propped the sky and the mid-region of the air, the compass of the broad earth hath He measured.
He, King Supreme, encompasses all living creatures. Truly all these are God's ordinances.
4.31 Over the woods God hath extended the air, put milk in kine and vigorous speed in horses,
set intellect in hearts and fire in houses, the sun in heaven and the Soma plant on the mountain.
4.32 Ascend into the sun's light, mount the pupil set in the eye of the flame,
where thou speedest along, radiant through the favour of the All-Knowing.
4.33 Approach, ye oxen, fit to bear the yoke; be yoked without a tear.
Slaying no man, urging the priest forward, go happily to the Sacrificer's dwelling.
4.34 O Soma, thou art my gracious helper: move forward on thy way to all the stations.
Let not opponents, let not robbers find thee, let not malignant wolves await thy coming.
Fly thou away, becoming a falcon. Go to the dwelling of the Sacrificer. That is the special place for us to rest in.
4.35 Do homage to the All-Seeing and the Friend: offer this solemn worship to the Mighty God, who seeth far away.
Sing praises to Him whose sign is the sun.
4.36 Thou art a prop for the Soma to rest on. Ye are the pins that strengthen the pillar.
Thou art the lawful seat. Sit on the lawful seat.
4.37 Such of Thy glories as with poured offerings men honour, may they all invest our worship.
Wealth-giver, furtherer with troops of heroes, sparing the brave, come, O Soma, to our houses.
