Plain text of Book 31
God sees all things and hears all things; there is no limit to His knowledge. Encompassing the earth on every side, He transcends it.
All that hath been and all that shall be exists by God's command. He is Lord of immortality, and creation grows by the provision He sends.
So mighty is His grandeur; yea, greater than this is God. All creatures are His creation; the greater part of what He holds is eternal life in the Garden.
Exalted above all, He decreed what lies below; thence He extends His dominion over what eats not and what eats.
From Him came the first creation, by His command; and He spread out the earth and the heavens, to west and east, beyond the boundaries known to us.
It is He who formed the creatures of the air and the animals, both wild and tame.
From Him came verses of praise and chants of worship, and the sacred formulas of devotion.
It is He who created horses, and all cattle with two rows of teeth; He created kine, and goats and sheep, for the benefit of men.
Angels and the righteous of old worshipped Him alone, in the earliest time.
There are many callings among men. What are the callings of the mouth, and of the arms, and of the thighs and feet?
Some are scholars and teachers, some are rulers and defenders, some are farmers and tradesmen, some are labourers; different callings and duties for different people, and the noblest before God is the most righteous.
God created the moon and the sun, the wind and the breath of life, and the fire; signs for people who reflect.
He created the mid-air, and fashioned the sky, and the earth, and the quarters. Thus He formed the worlds.
Spring, summer and autumn are seasons He ordained; and the butter, the oblation and the wood are His provisions for the rites of worship made in His name alone.
Seven are the enclosing-sticks, and three times seven the kindling-brands of the rite, that the worshippers may offer their worship.
The worshippers worship God and offer their sacrifices for His sake: these were the earliest holy ordinances. The mighty ones attained the height of heaven, where the righteous of old are dwelling.
In the beginning man was formed, collected from water and earth; God fashioned his form. This was at first the mortal's birth and his honour.
I know the Mighty One whose light is like the Sun, beyond the reach of darkness. He only who knows Him leaves Death behind him. There is no path save this alone to travel.
God, never born, fashions every being in the womb in diverse forms. The wise discern the womb from which He bringeth forth. By Him alone stand all existing creatures.
He who gives light and heat to the angels, first, foremost, and before the angels were: to Him, the bright, the holy One, be reverence!
Thus spoke the angels at first, as the Holy One created them: the scholar who may know Thee thus shall be guided to the right path.
O God, grant me the world to come, and grant me what is good in this world.
