Plain text of Book 27
May half-years and seasons strengthen thee, O sacred flame, the years and all the truths and the sages! Flash forth with thy effulgence, a sign of God's light: illumine all four regions of the heaven.
Blaze up, O flame, wake this man to knowledge; rise erect for great and happy fortune. May those be unharmed who worship God, may His priests be glorious, and none beside them!
The scholars present here have kindled thee, O flame: be thou a blessing in our sanctuary. Quell our foemen; watch in thy house with care that never ceases.
Even here, O flame, establish wealth: let not oppressors injure thee by thinking of thee first. Light be thy task, O flame, with thy power: may he who worships God wax strong, invincible.
Kind to the people, take thy power, O flame; contend with the friend by way of friendship. Placed in the centre of our kinsmen, flash forth, to be invoked by kings around thee.
Past those who slay, past enemies, past thoughtless men, past those who hate, yea, O God, drive away all woe and trouble; vouchsafe us opulence with men about us.
Holder of sway, shine here refulgent, O flame! invincible, unconquered. Light all the regions, chasing human terrors; with happy help, O God, guard us today for increase.
O God, Lord of Prayer, Light-giver, give this man knowledge: sharpen him thoroughly though already sharpened. To great and high felicity exalt him: in him let all the angels rejoice and triumph.
As Thou, O Lord of Prayer, from curse hast freed us, the healing angels, O God, have chased death far from us with mighty powers.
Looking upon the loftier light, etc., as in XX. 21.
Uplifted are the brands that are its fuel: lofty and brilliant are the flames, splendidly bright, fair of aspect.
God, the Pure, the Lord, all-possessing, shall bedew the paths with mead and butter.
With mead to the sacrifice Thou comest, O God, as friendly-minded Praised-of-men, and as the Light-giver, righteous God who brings all blessings.
He cometh hitherward with power and fatness, the Luminous, implored with adoration; while rites proceed the ladles move in His name.
Let the priest pay worship to the greatness of God; He verily gives enjoyments: the wisest, the best giver of wealth.
Widely expansive, ruling by foundation, the doors divine, and after, all, preserve these holy works.
May Dawn and Night protect, in His house, this our sacrificial worship.
Ye two celestial priests, greet with praises this lofty rite of ours. Cause that our sacrifice be well conducted.
Upon this grass may the three blessings be seated, devotion, eloquence, and sustaining wisdom, glorified with song.
This our productive wondrous flow may God the Shaper pour down on this man's kin, with wealth and heroes.
O Lord of the forest tree, presenting thyself, send our offering Godward! Let the fire, the immolator, season our oblation.
Offer sacrifice in the name of God the Mighty, the Knower of all that is born! Blessed be it! May God accept the gift we offer!
Wise, bright, the Arranger of teams, He seeketh men with rich food whose treasures are abundant. They have stood firm of one accord with the Sustainer of the winds; yea, the men wrought all noble operations.
The God who for our riches made both these worlds, whose bounty heavenly Abundance proclaims: His team of harnessed horses waits on the Sustainer of the winds, and foremost on the radiant treasure-holder.
What time the mighty waters came containing the universal germ, producing fire, thence sprang the angels' one spirit into being. Him, the Creator, shall we adore with our oblation.
He who in His might surveyed the floods enclosing productive force and generating worship, He who is God, and none beside Him: Him shall we adore with our oblation.
The teams wherewith Thou seekest him who offers, within his house, O Lord of the winds, to direct him, therewith send wealth to us with full enjoyment, a hero son and gifts of kine and horses.
With Thy yoked teams in hundreds and in thousands come to our sacrifice and solemn worship. O Lord of the winds, accept this libation. Preserve us evermore with blessings.
Come by Thy team, O Lord of the winds: to Thee is offered this, the pure. Thou visitest the house of the presser.
O Lord of the winds, the bright is offered Thee, best of the meath at holy rites. Come Thou to accept the offering, God longed-for, on Thy team-drawn car.
Lover of worship, leader, come, O Lord of the winds, with thought, to sacrifice, propitious with propitious teams!
With all the thousand chariots that are Thine, O Lord of the winds, come to us, team-drawn, to accept the offering.
Come Thou with one, and ten, O Self-Existent! With two unto the sacrifice, and twenty. Three are the teams and thirty which convey Thee, O Lord of the winds; in this place unyoke Thy coursers.
Wonderful Lord of the winds, Lord of Truth, Thy saving succour we elect.
Like kine unmilked we call aloud, Hero, to Thee and sing Thy praise, Looker on heavenly light, Lord of this moving world, Lord, O Mighty, of what moveth not.
None other like to Thee, of earth or of the heavens, hath been or ever will be created. Desiring horses, O Mighty, Bounteous Lord, and kine, as men of might we call on Thee.
That we may win us wealth and power, we poets call on Thee only. In war men call on Thee, O Mighty! the hero's Lord; in the steed's race-course call on Thee.
As such, O Wonderful, whose hand holds thunder, praised as mighty, Caster of the Stone! Pour on us boldly, O Mighty, kine and chariot-steeds ever to be the conqueror's strength.
What succour will He bring to us, wonderful, ever-prospering Friend? With what most mighty company?
What genuine and most liberal gift will move Thee to burst open even strongly-guarded wealth?
Do Thou who art protector of us Thy friends who praise Thee, with hundred aids approach us.
Sing to your God with each song, at every sacrifice, for strength. Come, let us praise the Wise and Everlasting God even as a well-beloved Friend.
Protect us, O God, through the first, protect us through the second hymn. Protect us through three hymns, O Lord of Power and Might; through four hymns, O Giver of dwellings, guard Thou us.
The Giver of Strength: is He not our Friend? Let us serve Him with the offering of our gifts. In battles may He be our help and strength, yea, be the saviour of our lives.
Thou, altar, markest the years: the Samvatsara, the Parivatsara, the Idavatsara, the Idvatsara, the Vatsara. May God make thy dawns prosper, thy days and nights, thy half-months, months, seasons, and years. Combine them for their going and their coming, and send them forward on their ordered courses. In eagle's shape thou art piled up and layered. By God's grace, like the Angirases, be steady.
