Plain text of Book 25

In the beginning rose the Lord of all that is, etc., as in XIII. 4 and XXIII. 1.

He who by His grandeur, etc., as in XXIII. 3.

To whom belong, by His might, these snow-covered mountains, and men call the sea and the river Rasa His possession; to whom belong these arms, these heavenly regions: Him, the God, shall we adore with our oblation.

Giver of vital breath, of power and vigour, He whose commandment all the angels obey; the Lord of death and of life, whose protection is immortal life: Him, the God, shall we adore with our oblation.

May powers auspicious come to us from every side, never deceived, unhindered and victorious, that the angels ever may be with us for our gain, our guardians day by day, unceasing in their care.

May God's auspicious favour be ours; on us descend the bounty of God. The friendship of the angels and the righteous have we devoutly sought: so may God extend our life that we may live.

We call upon Him with a hymn of olden time, as the Bountiful, the Skilful Friend, the Boundless, the Lord of Law, the All-Seeing, the Provider, the Healer. May the Giver of Eloquence, auspicious, grant felicity.

May the wind waft to us that pleasant medicine, may Earth our nurse give it, and Heaven above, and the joy-giving stones that press the juice. Healers, may ye, for whom our spirits long, hear this.

Him we invoke for aid who reigns supreme, the Lord of all that stands or moves, inspirer of the soul, that God the Nourisher may promote the increase of our wealth, our keeper and our guard infallible for our good.

Illustrious far and wide, may God the Mighty prosper us; may the Nourisher prosper us, the Master of all wealth. May the Swift One with uninjured wheels prosper us; may the Lord of Prayer vouchsafe to us prosperity.

The angels of the storm, borne by spotted steeds, moving in glory, oft visiting holy rites, sages whose tongue is flame and their eyes the sun, hither let all the angels come for our protection.

O God, may we with our ears listen to what is good, and with our eyes see what is good. With limbs and bodies firm, extolling Thee, may we attain the term of life appointed by God.

A hundred autumns stand before us, O God, within whose span Thou bringest our bodies to decay; within whose span our sons become fathers in turn. Break not in the midst our course of fleeting life.

The boundless grace of God encompasses the heaven; it encompasses the mid-air; it encompasses the mother and the father and the son.
