Plain text of Book 22

Splendour art thou, bright, deathless, life-protector. Protector of my life be thou. By impulse of God the Light-giver I take thee with the arms of the healing angels, with the hands of the Nourisher.

This girdle, which in their religious meetings sages assumed in earlier time of worship, is present with us here at this libation, in the Law's hymn, proclaiming rich abundance.

Famous art thou, thou art the world, controller and upholder thou. Go, consecrated in God's name to God, the Lord of all people, widely famed.

For God and for the Creator I fit thee. For God and for the Creator, O scholar, will I tie up the horse. Thence may I prosper! Binding him for God's sake, be thou successful.

Thee, welcome to God the Creator, I sprinkle. I sprinkle thee, welcome to God the Mighty and the Radiant. I sprinkle thee, acceptable to God, Lord of the winds. Thee, welcome to the angels, I besprinkle. Thee, welcome to all the righteous, I sprinkle. With fury God the All-Seeing seizes the man who would slay the steed outside the rite. Away with the wicked man!

Blessed be it, in the name of God the Radiant! Blessed be it, in the name of God the Provider! Blessed be it, for the joy of the waters! Blessed be it, in the name of God the Light-giver! Blessed be it, in the name of God, Lord of the winds! Blessed be it, in the name of God the All-Pervading! Blessed be it, in the name of God the Mighty! Blessed be it, in the name of God the Lord of Prayer! Blessed be it, in the name of God the Friend! Blessed be it, in the name of God the All-Seeing!

May we attain that excellent glory of God the Light-giver: so may He stimulate our prayers.

For our protection I invoke God the Light-giver, golden in bounty. He knoweth the place.

We specially invoke the grace of God the Light-giver, the observant, the great good-will that gives true boons.

We seek the eulogy and gift of God the Light-giver who strengthens grace, yea, of the God who knows our thoughts.

I invoke the Lord of heroes, the free-giving Light-giver, and call the Cheerer to the banquet of charity.

The judgment of the bright Light-giver, that cheers the company of the angels, with prayer we estimate as bliss.

Wake the fire with thy laud and set it aflame, that our offerings may be made for God's sake.

The oblation-bearer, well-inclined, the eager messenger, the fire comes near us with the thought.

The fire, the envoy, I place in front; the oblation-bearer I address. Here let it bear our offerings for God's sake.

Yea, O Purifier, Thou didst bring the Sun into being and spread it out with power, hasting to us with plenty vivified with milk.

Mighty through thy dam, eminent through thy sire, thou art a horse, thou art a steed, thou art a courser, thou art a comfort, thou art a racer, thou art a yoke-horse, thou art a strung steed, thou art a stallion, thou art manly-minded. Thou art called the Goer, thou art called the Colt. Follow thou the flight of the sun's rays. O angels, warders of the regions, protect for God's sake this horse besprinkled for sacrifice. Here is delight. Here take thy pleasure. Here is content. Here is self-content.

Blessed be it, in the name of the Creator! In the name of the One who knows the mind! In the name of the One who discerns the thought! In the name of God the Boundless! In the name of God the good and gracious Boundless! In the name of God the Giver of Eloquence! In the name of God the Purifying Giver of Eloquence! In the name of God the great Giver of Eloquence! 21 Let every mortal man elect, etc., repeated from IV. 8.
