Plain text of Book 16
1 Be Thou reverenced, O God, the Healer: we fear Thy wrath and Thy chastisement; Thy power is mighty.
2 With that mercy of Thine, mild, O God, gracious,
Even with that most blessed mercy, look upon us.
3 The chastisement which Thou holdest ready,
Make that auspicious, O Lord of the Heights. Injure not man nor moving thing.
4 O Lord of the Heights, we praise Thee with auspicious hymn;
That all, yea, all our people may be healthy and well-satisfied.
5 God, the Speaker of truth, the first divine Physician, hath defended us.
Crushing all evil, drive away all sorceresses down below.
6 We deprecate the wrath of the angels of chastisement who maintain their station in the regions,
Who in a thousand bands serve the Lord.
7 May the sun, God's sign, that glides away, azure and red,
That the herdsmen and the girls who carry water have beheld, when seen be kind to us.
8 Praise be to Him, the Bountiful, the All-Seeing,
Whose ministers are the angels.
9 O Lord, withhold Thy chastisement; let the bow of Thy wrath be unstrung,
And cast away, O Lord, the arrows of Thy wrath that are in Thy hand.
10 Now stringless be the bow of Thy wrath, Thy quiver hold no pointed shaft.
Let the shafts of Thy wrath be spent and the sheath that held Thy sword be bare.
11 Thy weapon, O Most Bountiful, resting in Thy hand,
Deprived of power to harm us, protect Thou us on every side.
12 So may the arrow of Thy bow, in all directions, pass us by,
And in a place remote from us lay Thou the quiver that Thou hast.
13 Having unbent Thy bow, O Thou All-Seeing, hundred-quivered One,
And dulled Thy pointed arrows' heads, be kind and gracious unto us.
14 We reverence Thee, O Lord, whose chastisement is stayed by mercy.
15 Do Thou no injury to great or small of us, harm not the growing boy, harm not the full-grown man.
Slay not a sire among us, slay no mother here, and to our own dear bodies, O Lord, do no harm.
16 Harm us not in our seed or in our progeny, harm us not in our life or in our cows or steeds.
Slay not our heroes in the fury of their wrath. We with offerings ever call on Thee alone.

47 O Pursuer, Lord of provision, Thou Cleaver,
Cleave not, destroy not one of these our children, nor of these our beasts, let nothing that is ours be sick.
48 To the Strong, the Healer, bring we these our songs of praise, to Him the Lord of Heroes,
That it be well with all our cattle and our men, that in this village all be healthy and well-fed.
49 O God, with that mercy of Thine which healeth every day,
Auspicious, healer of disease, be kind to us that we may live.
50 May the chastisement of the Healer turn aside and spare us, the great wrath of the Mighty avoid us.
Turn, Bounteous God, Thy chastisement from our leaders, and be Thou gracious to our seed and offspring.
51 Most Bountiful, most Auspicious, be auspicious and well-inclined to us.
Lay Thy chastisement on some remote place, and approach us with mercy.
52 O Averter of wounds, to Thee be glory, holy Lord!
May Thy thousand shafts of chastisement fall on the wrongdoers rather than on us.
53 Thousands of thousands are the means of chastisement ready with Thee:
Thou holy Lord, who hast the power, turn their points away from us.
54 Innumerable thousands are the angels of chastisement on the face of earth;
We pray that their bows be unbent a thousand leagues away.
55 There are angels above us in this mighty billowy sea of air;
Of all of these we pray that the bows be unbent, etc.
56 Angels dwell in the sky;
Of these we pray that the bows be unbent a thousand leagues away from us.
57 Angels of chastisement haunt realms beneath the earth:
Of these, etc.

Of these, etc.
