Plain text of Book 1

1.1 Thee for food. Thee for vigour. Ye are breezes.

To the noblest work may God the Light-giver impel you. Unharmed ones! swell the share of God the Mighty.

No thief, no evil-minded man shall master you, rich in offspring, free from pain and sickness.

Be constant, numerous, for this lord of cattle. Guard thou the cattle of the one who offers.

1.2 Strainer of the Bountiful art thou. Thou art heaven. Earth art thou. Thou art the vessel of the atmosphere.

Thou art the All-container. Stand thou firmly, secure by the Supreme Law, and do not totter. Nor let thy lord of sacrifice be unsteady.

1.3 Thou art the strainer, hundred-streamed, of the Bountiful. Thou art the strainer, thousand-streamed, of the Bountiful.

May God the Light-giver, with the strainer of the Bountiful, thousand-streamed, rightly cleansing, purify thee.

"Which didst thou milk?" "This is the cow Visvayu. This, Visvakarman. This, Visvadhayas."

Thee, the share set apart for God the Mighty, with the Soma, His provision, do I curdle. Be thou protector of the offering, O All-Pervading God.

1.4 I will observe the vow, O Lord of Vows, O God the Radiant! May I have strength therefor. Success attend me.

1.5 Now into truth from untruth do I enter.

1.6 Who is it that unites thee? He unites thee. For what doth he yoke thee? For that he yokes thee.

You two for work, you two for its completion.

1.7 Scorched are the fiends, scorched the malignant beings.

Burnt out are fiends, burnt out malignant beings.

Throughout the spacious middle air I travel.

1.8 Thou art the yoke. Guard us against him who does injury, and keep from harm those who would be harmed.

Thou art the best carrier of the offerings made for God's sake, bound most firmly, filled fullest, most welcome, the best summoner to His worship.

1.9 Thou art unbent, receiver of the offering. Stand firmly in thy place and do not totter.

Nor let thy lord of sacrifice be unsteady.

Let the sacrifice mount thee. To the wind lie open. The demons are expelled. Let the five grasp it.

1.10 By the impulse of God the Light-giver I take thee, with the arms of the angels, with the hands of the Nourisher.

Thee, pleasing to God the Radiant and the Bountiful.

1.11 Thee for abundance, not for evil. May mine eye look upon the light of heaven.

May those with doors stand on the earth securely. Throughout the spacious middle air I travel.

Upon the navel of the earth I place thee, on the lap of the broad earth.

O God the Radiant, protect the offering!

1.12 Ye two are strainers that belong to the sacrifice. By the impulse of God the Light-giver, with this flawless strainer I purify you with the rays of the sun, a sign of God.

Bright Waters, flowing forward, foremost drinkers, lead forward now this sacrifice, lead forward the lord of the sacrifice, the God-devoted lord of the sacrifice, the liberal giver.

1.13 God the Mighty chose you in the struggle against the Obstructor; in the struggle against the Obstructor you were His chosen.

By over-sprinkling are ye consecrated. I sprinkle thee, pleasing to God the Radiant. I sprinkle thee, welcome to Him.

Pure for the work devoted to God be ye, and holy, pure for the worship of God. Whatever of yours the impure have by their touch polluted, hereby I cleanse for you from all defilement.

1.14 Giver art thou of happiness. Rejected are fiends, rejected are malignant beings.

Skin of the earth art thou. May the earth receive thee. A wooden stone art thou. Thou art a broad-based stone. May the skin of the earth receive thee.

1.15 Body of the flame art thou, the releaser of speech. I seize thee for the service of God.

A mighty stone art thou, formed out of timber.

Make ready this offering for God's sake: with careful preparation make it ready.

Preparer of the offering, come! Preparer of the offering, come! Preparer of the offering, come!

1.16 Thou art a cock whose tongue is sweet with honey. Call to us hither sap and manly vigour.

May we with thee in every fight be victors. Rain-grown art thou. May the rain-grown receive thee.

Cleared off are fiends, cleared off are evil beings. Expelled are fiends. May the wind separate you. May God the Light-giver, the golden-handed, with flawless hand receive you unto Himself.

1.17 Bold art thou. Cast away the corpse-consuming flame. Drive off the flame that devours raw flesh, O God the Radiant.

Bring hither that which serves the offering. Firm art thou. Make the earth firm. For the overthrow of the foe I set thee on, devoted to the priesthood, devoted to the nobles and the kinsmen.

1.18 O God the Radiant, accept our holy service.

Keeper art thou: make firm the air's mid-region. For the foe's overthrow I set thee on, devoted to the priesthood and nobility and kinsmen.

Thou art a stay: uphold the sky securely. For the foe's overthrow, as before.

I set thee on for the sake of all the regions. Formers of layers are ye, and heap-formers. With the ardour of the Bhrigus and Angirases be heated.

1.19 Giver of happiness art thou. Rejected are fiends, rejected are malignant beings. Skin of the earth art thou. May the earth receive thee.

Bowl, rock art thou. May the skin of the earth receive thee.

Thou art the sky's supporting pillar.

Bowl from the rock art thou. May the rock receive thee.

1.20 Grain art thou. Be acceptable to God. Thee for in-breathing. For out-breath thee. Thee for diffusive breathing. May I impart to life a long extension.

May God the Light-giver, the golden-handed, with flawless hand receive you unto Himself.

Thee for the eye. Juice art thou of the Great Ones.

1.21 By the impulse of God the Light-giver I strew thee, with the arms of the angels, with the hands of the Nourisher.

With plants let waters, plants with sap be mingled. United be the rich ones with the moving. The sweet ones and the sweet be joined together.

1.22 For generation's sake I join thee. This is for God the Radiant. This is for God the Radiant and the Bountiful. Thee for food.

Thou art the caldron, life of all that liveth. Spread thyself widely forth, thou, widely spreading. So may thy lord of sacrifice spread widely.

Thy skin let the flame not harm. In highest heaven may God the Light-giver bake thee.

1.23 Fear not. Shrink not. Let not the sacrifice be languid, not languid be the offspring of the one who offers.

1.24 By the impulse of God the Light-giver I take thee, with the arms of the angels, with the hands of the Nourisher, thee who performest sacred service for God.

Right arm of might art thou: sharp with a thousand spikes, a hundred edges. The keen-edged wind art thou, the overcomer of the foe of truth.

1.25 O Earth, whereon men serve God with worship, let me not do thy plant's root any damage.

Go to the cow-pen. May heaven rain for thee.

On this earth's farthest end, O God the Light-giver, restrain him, with a hundred restraints restrain the man who works against the truth. Thence do not let him go forth to harm.

1.26 May I drive the evil one away from the earth, the place where men make offerings for God's sake.

Go to the cow-pen. May heaven rain for thee.

O evil one, thou shalt not soar to heaven. Let not thy drop mount upward to the sky.

On this earth's farthest end, O God the Light-giver, restrain him, with a hundred restraints restrain the man who works against the truth. Thence do not let him go forth to harm.

1.27 With the Gayatri metre I enclose thee. I lay the Trishtup metre round about thee. With the Jagati metre I confine and gird thee.

Sprung from good soil art thou, and bliss-bestowing. Pleasant art thou, and a fair seat to rest on. Thou hast both strengthening food and drink in plenty.

1.28 Before the secret departure of the cruel foe, O Mighty One, raise high the earth, the life-bestower.

Deposit in its place the sprinkling-water. Thou art the overcomer of the man who is hostile to us.

1.29 Scorched are the demons, scorched the evil beings. Burnt out are fiends, burnt out malignant creatures.

Unsharpened, thou art the overcomer of the foes of truth. Thee, rich in food, I cleanse for the food's kindling.

Scorched are the demons, scorched the evil beings. Burnt out are fiends, burnt out malignant creatures.

Thee, rich in food, I cleanse for the food's kindling.

1.30 A girdle for the earth art thou. All-pervading art thou. For great strength I take thee. I look upon thee with an eye uninjured.

Thou art the tongue of the flame. Be a good caller to worship at every holy station, at every sacred text I utter.

1.31 By the impulse of God the Light-giver do I cleanse thee, with flawless strainer, with the rays of the sun, a sign of God.

By the impulse of God the Light-giver do I cleanse you, with flawless strainer, with the rays of the sun, a sign of God.

Light art thou; thou art splendid; thou art undying. Thou, truly, art the beloved station of the devoted, the inviolable means of holy worship.
