Plain text of Seventh Prapathaka · First Khanda

7.1.1 "Teach me, Sir!" With these words Narada came to Sanatkumara.

To him he then said: "Come to me with what you know. Then I will tell you still further."

7.1.2 Then he said to him: "Sir, I know the Rig, the Yajur, the Sama, the Atharva as the fourth, Legend and Ancient Lore as the fifth, Grammar, Mathematics, Chronology, Logic, Polity, the Science of Sacred Knowledge, Military Science, and the Fine Arts. This, Sir, I know.

7.1.3 Such a one am I, Sir, knowing the sacred sayings, but not knowing the Lord of my soul. It has been heard by me from those who are like you, Sir, that he who knows his Lord crosses over sorrow. Such a sorrowing one am I, Sir. Do you, Sir, cause me, who am such a one, to cross over to the other side of sorrow."

To him he then said: "Verily, whatever you have here learned, verily, that is mere name.

7.1.4 Verily, a name are the Rig, the Yajur, the Sama, the Atharva as the fourth, Legend and Ancient Lore as the fifth, Grammar, Mathematics, Chronology, Logic, Polity, the Science of Sacred Knowledge, Military Science, and the Fine Arts. This is mere name. Honor name as a gift of God.

7.1.5 He who honors name as a gift of God, as far as name goes, so far he has freedom, he who honors name as a gift of God."

"Is there, Sir, more than name?"

"There is, assuredly, more than name."

"Do you, Sir, tell me it."
