Plain text of Eighth Prapathaka · Twelfth Khanda
8.12.1 "O Maghavan, verily, this body is mortal. It has been seized by death. But it is the dwelling-place of the deathless, bodiless soul, which God created. Verily, he who is in the body is held by pleasure and pain. Verily, there is no freedom from pleasure and pain for one while he is in the body. Verily, while one is bodiless, pleasure and pain do not touch him.
8.12.2 The wind is bodiless. Clouds, lightning, thunder, these are bodiless. Now as these, when they arise from yonder space and reach the highest light, appear each with its own form, [3] even so that serene soul, when it rises up from this body and reaches the highest light, appears with its own form. Such a one is among the blessed. There such a one goes around laughing, sporting, having enjoyment with spouses or mounts or friends, not remembering the burden of this body. As a draft-animal is yoked in a wagon, even so this spirit is yoked in this body.
8.12.4 Now, when the eye is directed thus toward space, that is the seeing soul; the eye is the instrument for seeing. Now, he who knows 'Let me smell this,' that is the soul; the nose is the instrument for smelling. Now, he who knows 'Let me utter this,' that is the soul; the voice is the instrument for utterance. Now, he who knows 'Let me hear this,' that is the soul; the ear is the instrument for hearing.
8.12.5 Now, he who knows 'Let me think this,' that is the soul; the mind is its inner eye. He, verily, with that inner eye, the mind, sees desires here, and experiences enjoyment.
8.12.6 Verily, the angels in the highest realm glorify their Lord. Therefore all worlds and all desires are given to them by His grace. He obtains all worlds and all desires who has found out and who understands his Lord."
Thus spoke the teacher, yea, thus spoke the teacher!
