Plain text of Part I · Chapter 25

There is One, undefined and complete, who was before heaven and earth, and was not created. How still He is and formless, standing alone, and undergoing no change, reaching everywhere and in no danger (of being exhausted)! He is the Originator of all things.

I do not know His name, and I give it the designation of the Way (or Course). Making an effort (further) to give Him a name I call Him The Great.

Great, His command passes on (in constant flow). Passing on, it becomes remote. Having become remote, it returns. Therefore God is great; the heaven is great, as His sign; the earth is great, as His sign; and the (sage) ruler, appointed under God, is also great. In the universe there are four that are called great, and the righteous ruler is one of them.

Man takes his law from the earth; the earth takes its law from the heaven; the heaven takes its law from the decree of God. The law of God is His being what He is.
