Plain text of A hymn to Ninurta for Shu-Suen (Shu-Suen D)
1-4 Ancient warrior, greatly respected and forceful, with the strength of a full-grown lion! O God the Mighty Warrior (Ninurta), great lion, fierce opponent in battle! Mighty one, who humbles the enemy peoples, destroyer of cities, who turns the settlements into dust! Great wild bull, a battering ram against great walls!
6-14 A flood which frightens the rebel lands, without rival! A deathly hush, a bolt of lightning. You have made the name of king Shu-Suen known among the widespread people. When he brings big bulls and big sheep to the main courtyard of the holy house, the place in which the fates are decreed, may he greet You from its holy offering place, may Shu-Suen greet You from there. Grant long life, long life for Shu-Suen.
16-20 Firstborn of the Lord of the heights, You are clothed in fearsomeness.
22-28 Raging, ... strong one, the august provider, ... Shu-Suen who is always at the service of the Lord. O Mighty Warrior, may You be his great wall, may You look on him favourably; may You be Shu-Suen's great wall, may You look on him favourably.
30 May You be the aid of my Shu-Suen's weapons.
32-43 You who move fast into the heart of the mountains! A massive stormwind over the rebel lands, devastating the people! Counsellor, who controls perfectly the powers of the Great House, support of his Lord! My king, the great strength of the Lord, from whose grasp no foreign country can escape! For Shu-Suen, given great strength by the Lord, You will destroy myriads in the battle and the fray.
44-62 My king, You alone perform the ancient rites, a truly immense task. Yellow evening light that casts fear over the Land, a fearsome dragon brandishing a terrible torch! My king, grandiloquent great warrior, confident in his strength! And may you, Shu-Suen, put your trust in Him, in the Lord. May Shu-Suen, the king whom the Lord has appointed for you, be your constable. Holy and fearsome, a truly immense task. Like your august strength, he has written your name on it. He will be the guardian of his life forever.
