Plain text of The Sanctuary of Eridug (Enki's Journey to Nibru)

1-8 In those remote days, when the fates were determined; in a year when abundance was brought about, and people broke through the earth like herbs and plants -- then the king of the Deep, the Lord who determines the fates, had His sanctuary built entirely from silver and lapis lazuli. Its silver and lapis lazuli were the shining daylight. Into the shrine of the Deep he brought joy.

9-17 An artfully made bright crenellation rising out from the Deep was erected. The temple was built from precious metal, decorated with lapis lazuli, and covered abundantly with gold. In Eridug the house was built on the bank. During the night the house offered its best in praise of its Lord.

18-25 Before the Lord, the minister praised the house; he went to the building and addressed it: "House, built from precious metal and lapis lazuli; whose foundation pegs are driven into the Deep! Like the Tigris and the Euphrates, it is mighty and awe-inspiring. Joy has been brought into the Deep."

26-32 "Your lock has no rival. Your bolt is a fearsome lion. Your roof beams are artfully made. Your reed-mats are like lapis lazuli, decorating the roof-beams. Your vault is a wild bull raising its horns. Your door is awe-inspiring. Your staircase is a lion coming down."

33-43 "Deep, pure place which fulfils its purpose! The Lord has directed His decree toward you. He has embellished your foundation pegs with cornelian. He has adorned you with lapis lazuli. The house is provisioned with holy wax; in your midst a lofty seat is erected, your door-jamb is the holy locking bar of heaven."

44-48 "Deep, pure place, place where the fates are determined -- the Lord of wisdom, the Lord of Eridug, lets nobody look into its midst. Your priests let their hair down their backs."

49-61 "Beloved Eridug, whose inside is full of abundance! Deep, life of the Land! Temple built on the edge, befitting the artful powers! Eridug, your shadow extends over the midst of the sea! Rising sea without a rival; mighty awe-inspiring river which terrifies the Land! High citadel standing firm on the earth! Temple at the edge of the deep, lofty temple which bestows wisdom on the Land; your cry, like that of a mighty rising river, reaches the King."

62-67 "The lyre, the aljar instrument, the balaj drum with the drumsticks, the harhar, the sabitum, and the miritum instruments offer their best for his holy temple. They resounded by themselves with a sweet sound, and seven singers sang."

68-70 "What the Lord says is irrefutable; it is well established." This is what the minister spoke to the building; he praised the house with sweet songs.

71-82 As it has been built, as it has been built; as Eridug has been raised up, it is an artfully built mountain which floats on the water. Birds brood in its green orchards laden with fruit. The suhur carp play among the honey-herbs, and the ectub carp dart among the small gizi reeds. When the Lord's decree goes forth, the fishes rise before it like waves. He has the Deep stand as a marvel, as He brings joy into the depths.

83-92 Like the sea, He is awe-inspiring; like a mighty river, He instils fear. The Euphrates rises before Him as it does before the fierce south wind. The ship departs of its own accord. As it leaves the temple of Eridug, the river gurgles to its Lord: its sound is a calf's mooing, the mooing of a good cow.

93-95 Oxen were slaughtered, and sheep were offered there lavishly for God's sake. Where there were no ala drums, drums were installed in their places; where there were no bronze ub drums, some were despatched to their places.

96-116 He directed his steps on his own to Nibru and entered the shrine of Nibru. In the shrine of Nibru, a meal was provided for the assembly. An elder was seated at the head of the table, and the notables at the adjacent places. All of them were enjoying the meal. They filled the bronze vessels to the brim. They made the vessels shine like holy barges. After the meal had been enjoyed, the assembly was made happy in Nibru.

117-129 The chief of the assembly addressed the righteous: "Great ones who are standing here! You who have lined up in the place of assembly! The servant of God has built up the temple! He has made Eridug rise up from the ground like a mountain! He has built it in a pleasant place, in Eridug, the pure place, where no one is to enter -- a temple built with silver and decorated with lapis lazuli, a house which tunes the seven tigi drums properly, and provides prayers; where holy songs make all of the house a lovely place -- the shrine of the Deep, the good destiny decreed by God, befitting the elaborate powers; the temple of Eridug, built with silver: for all this, praise be to God!"
