Plain text of Chapter I

In the name of God. Glory to God!

Decade I — God the Radiant (Agni)

1 Come, O God the Radiant (Agni), praised with song, to our devotion and our offering: be present among us as our guide in prayer!

2 O God the Radiant, Thou hast been ordained the Lord of every act of worship, by the angels, among the race of men.

3 God the Radiant we choose as our helper, the One skilled in guiding this holy rite, possessor of all wealth.

4 Served with devotion, shining and bright, through love of song may God the Radiant, bent on granting riches, strike down the obstructing evils!

5 I praise your most beloved guest like a dear friend, O God the Radiant, Him who, like a chariot, wins us wealth.

6 Do Thou, O God, with great might guard us from all malignity, yea, from the hate of mortal man!

7 O God, come; far other songs of praise will I sing forth to Thee. Wax mighty in Thy bounty!

8 May the singer draw Thy mind away even from Thy loftiest dwelling place! O God, I yearn for Thee with song.

9 O God, the light that Thy messenger brought forth for us from the sky, the head of all who devote themselves to Thee.

10 O God, bring us radiant light to be our mighty succour, for Thou art the Light of all that is seen!

Decade II — God the Radiant

1 O God, the people sing reverent praise to Thee for strength: with terrors trouble Thou the foe.

2 I seek with song Thy messenger, bearer of the offering, lord of wealth, immortal, best in worship.

3 Still turning to their aim in Thee, the hymns of the worshipper have come to Thee before the wind.

4 To Thee, who bringest the light after night, O God, day by day with prayer, bringing reverence, we come.

5 Help, Thou who knowest all praise, this work, a lovely hymn in praise of God the Healer, adorable in every house!

6 To this fair gathering to drink the milky draught art Thou called forth: O God, come with Thy angels!

7 With homage will I reverence Thee, O God, like a long-tailed steed, Sovereign Lord of holy rites.

8 As the righteous of old called, as they called, I call upon the radiant God, robed with the sea.

9 When he kindles the fire, man should attend to the song with his heart: I kindle the fire, and glorify God till it glows.

10 Then, verily, they see the light refulgent of the primeval seed, kindled on yonder side of heaven.

Decade III — God the Radiant

1 Hither, for powerful kinship, I call God, Him who prospers you, most frequent at our solemn rites.

2 May God with His pointed blaze cast down each fierce devouring fiend: may God win us wealth through righteous striving!

3 O God, be gracious; Thou art great: Thou hast approached the pious man, Thou hast come to the place of prayer.

4 O God, preserve us from distress, consume our enemies, O Eternal One, with Thy hottest flames.

5 O God, let Thy most excellent powers be sent forth! The swift ones bring Thee tidings rapidly.

6 Lord of the tribes, whom all must seek, we worship; Thou art refulgent, rich in valiant men.

7 God is the head and height of heaven, the Master of the earth is He; He quickeneth the waters' seed.

8 O God, graciously announce this our good fortune from the angels, and this our newest hymn of praise!

9 By song, O God, the singer hath brought Thee forth in praise: hear my call, O Refulgent One!

10 God, the Sage, the Lord of Strength, encompasses the sacred gifts, giving the giver precious things.

11 His heralds bear His word aloft, the God who knoweth all that lives; the sun is His sign, that all may look on it.

12 Praise God in worship, the Sage whose holy laws are true, the God who driveth grief away.

13 Kind be the blessings of the heavens to lend us help, and kind that we may drink: may their streams bring us health and wealth.

14 Lord of the brave, whose songs dost Thou in Thine abundance now inspire, Thou whose hymns help to win the kine?

Decade IV — God the Radiant

1 Sing to your Lord with each song, at every act of worship for strength. Come, let us praise the wise and everlasting God, even as a well-beloved friend.

2 O God, protect Thou us by one, protect us by the second song, protect us by three hymns, O Lord of power and might, bright God, by four hymns guard us well!

3 O God, with Thy lofty beams, with Thy pure brilliancy, shine on us richly, holy Lord!

4 O God who art worshipped well, dear let our princes be to Thee, our wealthy patrons who are governors of men, who give as gifts the stall of kine!

5 O God, praise-hearing Lord of men, burning up the wicked, mighty art Thou, the ever-present, Lord of the household, home-friend and guardian from the sky.

6 Immortal and All-knowing, Thou bright-hued gift of the dawn, this day to him who offers devotion bring the angels who waken with the morn!

7 Wonderful, with Thy favouring help, send us Thy bounties, gracious Lord. Thou art the guide to earthly wealth: find rest and safety for our offspring!

8 Famed art Thou, O God, far and wide, preserver, righteous, and a Sage. The holy singers, O radiant One, call on Thee to come.

9 O holy God, give us wealth famed among men and strengthening life! Bestow on us, O Helper, that which many crave, more glorious still through righteousness!

10 To Him who dealeth out all wealth, the sweet-toned guide of men, to Him let the praises go forth like the first vessels filled with savoury juice.

Decade V — God the Radiant

1 With this mine homage I invoke God for you, the Giver of Strength, dear, wisest, skilled in noble worship.

2 Thou art the source from which mortals kindle their fires: alert Thou receivest the gift of the worshipper, and Thy light shineth on all.

3 He hath appeared, best prosperer, in whom men lay their holy acts: so may our songs of praise come nigh to God, who gave the believer strength!

4 Chief among helpers is God at the praise, as stones and grass in worship. O angels! I crave with song the help that is most excellent.

5 Pray to God of the piercing flame, with sacred songs, to be our help; for wealth, famed Lord, O men! He is the sure defence of the righteous.

6 Hear, O God who hast ears to hear, with all Thy train of angels! With those who come at dawn let the Friend and the Guardian be present at our worship.

7 The Light of God comes forth in His might. Rapidly hath it moved along the earth: it stands in high heaven's dwelling-place.

8 Whether Thou come from earth or from the lofty lucid realm of heaven, wax stronger in my song of praise: fill full all creatures, O most wise!

9 If, loving well the forests, Thou wentest to the maternal floods, not to be scorned, O God, is that return of Thine when from afar Thou art here.

10 O God, Thou didst establish a light for all the race of men: Thou hast blazed with the righteous, law-born and waxen strong, Thou whom the people reverence.
