Plain text of Rig Veda - Book The Tenth · Hymn LXVI. To the One Lord, with His Angels (16)
2 The offering is prepared: come to us, O Mighty One; the sun hath travelled over half his journey.
Friends with their stores are sitting round Thee waiting like lords of clans for the tribe's wandering chieftain.
3 Well-dressed, I fancy, is this recent present.
Accept the curd of noon's offering with favour, Thou whose deeds are mighty.
HYMN CLXXX. The Mighty.
1 O Much-invoked, Thou hast subdued Thy foemen: Thy might is loftiest; here display Thy bounty.
In Thy right hand, O Mighty One, bring us treasures: Thou art the Lord of rivers filled with riches.
2 Like a dread wild beast roaming on the mountain Thou hast approached us from the farthest distance.
Whetting Thy bold and Thy sharp blade, O Mighty One, crush Thou the foe and scatter those who hate us.
3 Thou, Mighty One, wast ordained as strength for lovely lordship o'er the people.
Thou drovest off the folk who were unfriendly, and to the righteous Thou gavest room and freedom.
HYMN CLXXXI. All the Powers.
1 Vasistha mastered the chant, taking it from the Giver of light, the Light-giver, and the All-Pervading; an offering, a portion of fourfold offering.
2 These sages found what lay remote and hidden, the worship's loftiest secret essence. From the Giver of light, the Light-giver, and the All-Pervading, Bharadvaja brought the great chant.
3 They found with mental eyes the earliest sacred formula, a pathway to God, that had descended. From the Giver of light, the Light-giver, and the All-Pervading, did these sages bring forth the warmth of devotion.
HYMN CLXXXII. The Lord of Prayer.
1 May the Lord of Prayer lead us safely over troubles and turn his evil thought against the sinner;
Repel the curse, and drive away ill-feeling, and give the worshipper peace and comfort!
2 May the praiser of men aid us at the beginning of worship: blest be our closing of the rite at the invokings.
May he repel the curse, and chase ill-feeling, and give the worshipper peace and comfort.
3 May he whose head is flaming burn the demons, haters of prayer, so that the arrow slay them. May he repel the curse and chase ill-feeling, and give the worshipper peace and comfort.
HYMN CLXXXIV. For Mother and Child.
1 May God form and mould the womb, may the Maker duly shape the forms, may the Creator infuse the stream, and may He lay the germ for thee.
2 May God set the germ, may the Lord bestow the germ.
3 That germ of thine we invoke God for, that in the tenth month thou mayst bear.
HYMN CLXXXV. The Boundless.
1 Great, unassailable must be the heavenly favour of the Three, the All-Seeing, the Friend, the Companion.
2 O'er these, neither at home nor yet abroad or pathways that are strange, the evil-minded foe hath power.
3 Nor over him, the man on whom the bountiful bestow eternal light that he may live.
HYMN CLXXXVI. The Wind.
1 Filling our hearts with health and joy, may the wind breathe his balm on us.
May God prolong our days of life.
2 Thou art a brother and a friend, O wind, a servant of the Lord,
So by His leave give us strength that we may live.
3 The store of life laid away yonder in Thy home, O Lord,
Give us thereof that we may live.
HYMN CLXXXVII. The Radiant.
1 To the Lord send I forth my song, to Him the Bull of all the folk: so may He bear us past our foes.
2 Who from the distance far away shines brilliantly across the wastes:
So may He bear us past our foes.
3 The Bull with brightly-gleaming flame who utterly consumes the fiends:
So may He bear us past our foes.
4 Who looks on all existing things and comprehends them with His view:
So may He bear us past our foes.
5 Resplendent Lord, who was born in farthest region of the air:
So may He bear us past our foes.
HYMN CLXXXVIII. The Radiant.
1 Now send ye forth the Knower of all, send hitherward the vigorous steed to seat him on our sacred grass.
2 I raise the lofty eulogy of the Knower of all, raining boons, with sages for his hero band.
3 With flames of the Knower of all which carry offerings to God, may he promote our worship.
HYMN CLXXXIX. The Sun.
1 This spotted bull hath come, and sat before the mother in the east, advancing to his father heaven.
2 Expiring when he draws his breath, she moves along the lucid spheres:
The bull shines out through all the sky.
3 Song is bestowed upon the bird: it rules supreme through thirty realms
Throughout the days at break of morn.
HYMN CXC. Creation.
1 From fervour kindled to its height eternal Law and Truth were born: thence was the night produced, and thence the billowy flood of sea arose.
2 From that same billowy flood of sea the year was afterwards produced,
Ordainer of the days and nights, Lord over all who close the eye.
3 The great Creator then formed in due order sun and moon.
He formed in order heaven and earth, the regions of the air, and light.
HYMN CXCI. Unity.
1 Thou, mighty Lord, gatherest up all that is precious for Thy friend. Bring us all treasures as Thou art enkindled in the place of offering.
2 Assemble, speak together: let your minds be all of one accord,
As the righteous of old, unanimous, sit down to their appointed share.
3 The place is common, common the assembly, common the mind, so be their thought united.
A common purpose do I lay before you, and worship with your general offering.
4 One and the same be your resolve, and be your minds of one accord.
United be the thoughts of all that all may happily agree.
