Plain text of Book The Eighth · HYMN LXV. The Mighty (Indra)
1 Not to forsake me, I invoke this Lord, girt by the angels of the winds, Lord of wondrous power who rules with might.
2 This Mighty One with His angelic helpers clave into pieces Vrtra's head
With hundred-knotted thunderbolt.
3 The Mighty One, with His angelic helpers, hath rent asunder Vrtra, and
Released the waters of the sea.
4 This is that Mighty One who, begirt by the angels, won the light of heaven
That He might bestow the Soma juice.
5 Mighty, impetuous, begirt by the angels, Him who loudly roars,
The Lord we invocate with songs.
6 The Lord, begirt by the angels, we invoke after the ancient plan,
That He may accept the Soma gift.
7 O liberal Lord, much-lauded Satakratu, accept
The Soma at this devotion.
8 To Thee, O Lord, these Soma juices, Thunderer!
Are offered from the heart with lauds.
9 Accept, O Lord, pressed Soma at the morning rites,
Whetting Thy thunderbolt with strength.
11 O Lord, both worlds complained to Thee when uttering Thy fearful roar,
What time Thou smotest the oppressors dead.
12 From the Mighty One have I measured out a song eight-footed with nine parts,
Delicate, faithful, to the Law.
