Plain text of Book The Eighth · HYMN LVI. The Sustaining Attributes of God (Adityas)
1 Now pray we to the Sovereign, to God for His aid, Who is gracious to assist.
2 May the Friend bear us o'er distress, and the Upholder and the Noble One,
Yea, as God knows.
3 For wonderful and meet for praise is His saving help
To him who offers and prepares.
4 The mighty aid of Thee, the Great, Upholder, Friend, Noble One,
We claim to be our sure defence.
5 Guard us, O Sustainer, still alive, before the deadly weapon strike:
Art Thou not He who hears our call?
6 What sheltering defence Thou hast for him who toils in pouring gifts,
Graciously bless us therewith.
7 O God, from sorrow there is freedom; for the sinless, wealth,
O Thou in whom no fault is seen.
8 Let not this fetter bind us fast: may He release us for success;
For strong is God and renowned.
9 O God who fain wouldst lend Thine aid, destroy not us as Thou destroyest
Thine enemies who go astray.
13 Those who, the Princes of the folk, in native glory, ne'er deceived,
Maintain their statutes, void of guilt-
14 As such, from mouth of ravening wolves, O Sustainer, rescue us,
Like a bound thief.
15 Sustainer, let this arrow, yea, let this malignity depart
From us ere it strike us dead.
16 For, Bountiful One, we have evermore enjoyed Thy help,
Both now and in the days of old.
17 To every one, O Most Wise, who turneth even from sin to Thee,
O God, vouchsafe that he may live.
18 May this new mercy profit us, which, O Sustainer, frees like one
Bound from his bonds.
19 O Sustainer, this Thy might is not to be despised by us:
So be Thou graciously inclined.
20 Let not the weapon of death nor the shaft, wrought with skill,
Destroy us ere old age be nigh.
21 On every side dispel all sin, O Sustainer, all hostility,
Indigence, and combined attack.
