Plain text of Book The Seventh · Book 7, Hymn 38. God the Light-giver
1 On high hath God, the Light-giver, extended the golden lustre which He spreads around Him.
Now, now must the Bestower be invoked by mortals, Lord of great riches who distributes treasures.
2 Rise up, O Light-giver whose hands are golden, and hear this man while worship is offered,
Spreading afar Thy broad and wide effulgence, and bringing mortal men the food that feeds them.
3 Let God the Light-giver be hymned with praises, to whom the angels, even, all sing glory.
Sweet be our lauds to Him whose due is worship: may He with all protection guard our princes.
4 Even he whom boundless mercy praises, rejoicing in God's incitement:
Even he who praise the high imperial Rulers, the All-Seeing, the Friend, the Lord of kindness, sing in concert.
5 They who come emulous to our worship, dispensing bounty, from the earth and heaven.
May they and the deep hear our calling: guard us, O Lord, with every blessing.
6 This may the Lord of Life, entreated, grant us, the wealth which God the Light-giver possesses.
The mighty calls on the Bestower for protection, on the Bestower calls the weak to give him riches.
7 Bless us, the swift, when we call, while slowly they move, strong singers, to the assembly of the righteous.
Crushing the wolf, the serpent, and the demons, may they completely banish all affliction.
8 Deep-skilled in Law eternal, deathless in reward, singers, O swift ones, help us in each fray for booty.
Drink of this sweet drink, be satisfied, be joyful: then go on paths which the righteous are wont to travel.
