HYMN I. God the Radiant (Agni)

1 I praise God the Radiant (Agni), the chosen Guide, the Lord of devoted worship, the Giver, the Lavisher of wealth.

2 Worthy is God the Radiant to be praised by the living as by the seers of old. He shall bring the angels near to us.

3 Through God man obtains wealth, increasing day by day, rich in sturdy sons, glorious.

4 O Radiant God, the devotion which Thou encompassest on every side goes surely to the realm of the angels.

5 May God the Radiant, the wise-minded, truthful and most gloriously great, come to us, and with Him the angels.

6 Whatever blessing, O God, Thou wilt grant to Thy worshipper, that is indeed Thy truth.

7 To Thee, Dispeller of the night, O God, day by day with prayer, bringing reverence, we come.

8 Ruler over all devotion, Guardian of the eternal Law, Radiant One, increasing in Thine own domain.

9 Be to us easy of approach, even as a father is to his son: O God, be with us for our welfare.

HYMN II. God the Giver of Life-breath (Vayu)

1 Beautiful One, the Life-giving Breath, come: for Thee these offerings are prepared. Hearken to our call.

2 Knowing the days, the singers glorify Thee with their hymns of praise.

3 O Lord of the Breath of life, Thy penetrating stream goes forth to the worshipper, far-spreading.

4 These, O Mighty One and Giver of life-breath, have been prepared; come for the sake of our offerings. The gifts are yearning for Thee.

5 Well do ye mark the offerings, ye Names of the Mighty and of the Giver of breath, rich in bounty. Come swiftly hither.

6 O Mighty One, come to what the presser has prepared: soon, O Hero, thus I make my prayer.

7 God the Friend (Mitra), of holy strength, I call, and God the foe-destroying All-Seeing (Varuna), who make the devotion complete.

8 O Friend and All-Seeing, through the Law, lovers and cherishers of Law, Thine is the mighty power.

9 O Friend and All-Seeing, wide in dominion, strong by nature, vouchsafe to our sages strength that works well.

HYMN III. The Angels of Healing (Asvins); God the Mighty; the Angels

1 O ye twin angels (Asvins), rich in treasure, of splendour, having nimble hands, accept our offering of food.

2 Ye twin angels, rich in wondrous deeds, ye heroes worthy of our praise, accept our songs with mighty thought.

3 Ye wonder-workers, to you belong these offerings: come, ye whose paths are red with flame.

4 O God the Mighty (Indra), marvellously bright, come: these offerings long for Thee, purified by fine fingers.

5 Urged by the holy singer, sped by song, O Mighty One, come to the prayers of him who pours his offering.

6 Approach, O Mighty God, hasting, Lord of swift steeds, to the prayers. In our offering take delight.

7 Ye angels, all of you, who protect, reward and cherish men, approach your servant's offering.

8 Ye angels, swift at work, come hither quickly, as milch-kine hasten to their stalls.

9 Ye angels, changing shape like serpents, fearless, void of guile, accept the sacred gift.

10 Wealthy in spoil, enriched with hymns, may the bright river Sarasvati desire with eager love our worship.

11 Inciter of all pleasant songs, inspirer of all gracious thought, may Sarasvati accept our rite.

12 Sarasvati, the mighty flood, by the light of God illuminates; she brightens every pious thought.

HYMN IV. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 As a good cow to him who milks, we call upon the Doer of fair deeds, to our assistance day by day.

2 Come Thou to our gathering, O Lord of power; the rapture of the Rich One gives kine.

3 So may we be acquainted with Thine innermost benevolence: neglect us not, come hither.

4 Go to the wise, unconquered One, ask of the Mighty, skilled in song, Him who is better than thy friends.

5 Whether the men who mock us say, "Depart unto another place, ye who serve the Mighty and none else,"

6 Or whether, O God of wondrous deeds, all our true people call us blest, still may we dwell in the Mighty One's care.

7 Unto the swift One bring the swift, man-cheering grace of devotion, that to the Friend gives wings and joy.

8 Thou, O Lord of a hundred powers, art the destroyer of the Vrtras, and Thou helpest the warrior in the fray.

9 We strengthen, O Lord of a hundred powers, Thee, the powerful in fight, that, O Mighty One, we may win wealth.

10 To Him, the mighty stream of wealth, the prompt friend of him who gives, yea, to this Mighty One sing your song.

HYMN V. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 O come ye hither, sit ye down: to the Mighty One sing forth your song, companions, bringing hymns of praise.

2 To Him, the richest of the rich, the Lord of excellent treasures, the Mighty One.

3 May He stand by us in our need and in abundance for our wealth: may He come nigh us with His strength.

4 Whose pair of tawny horses yoked in battles foemen challenge not: to Him, to the Mighty One, sing your song.

5 Nigh to the Lord come, for His enjoyment, these pure gifts, mingled with the curd.

6 Thou, grown at once to perfect strength, wast born for preeminence, O Strong One.

7 O Mighty One, lover of the song, may these offerings be pleasing to Thee: may they bring bliss to Thee, the Sage.

8 Our chants of praise have exalted Thee, O Lord of a hundred powers, and our lauds: so may the songs we sing exalt Thee.

9 O Mighty One, whose succour never fails, accept these offerings thousandfold, wherein all manly powers abide.

10 O Mighty One who lovest song, let no man hurt our bodies, keep slaughter far from us, for Thou canst.

HYMN VI. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 They who stand round Him as He moves harness the bright, the ruddy Steed: the lights are shining in the sky.

2 On both sides to the car they yoke the two bay coursers dear to Him, bold, tawny, bearers of the Chief.

3 Thou, making light where no light was, and form, O men, where form was not, wast manifest together with the Dawns.

4 Thereafter they, as is their wont, threw off the state of babes unborn, assuming names of worship.

5 Thou, O Mighty One, with the angels of the tempest, the breakers down of what is firm, foundest the kine even in the cave.

6 Worshipping even as they list, singers laud Him who findeth wealth, the far-renowned, the mighty One.

7 Mayest thou verily be seen coming by the fearless Mighty One's side: both joyous, equal in your sheen.

8 With the Mighty One's well-beloved hosts, the blameless, hastening to heaven, the worshipper cries aloud.

9 Come from this place, O Wanderer, or downward from the light of heaven: our songs of praise all yearn for this.

10 We seek the Mighty One to give us help, from here, from heaven above the earth, or from the spacious firmament.

HYMN VII. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 The singers with high praise, the reciters with their lauds, the choirs have glorified the Mighty One.

2 The Mighty One hath ever close to Him His two bay steeds and word-yoked car, the Mighty One, the golden, thunder-armed.

3 The Mighty One hath raised the Sun on high in heaven, that it may see afar: He burst the mountain for the kine.

4 Help us, O Mighty One, in the frays, yea, frays where thousand spoils are gained, with awful aids, O awful One.

5 In mighty battle we invoke the Mighty One, and in lesser fight, the Friend who bends His bolt at fiends.

6 Unclose, our manly Hero, Thou for ever bounteous, yonder cloud for us, Thou irresistible.

7 Still higher, at each strain of mine, the praises of the thunder-armed One rise: I find no laud worthy of Him.

8 Even as the bull drives on the herds, He drives the people with His might, the Ruler irresistible.

9 He who rules with single sway men, riches, and the fivefold race of those who dwell upon the earth.

10 For your sake from each side we call upon the Mighty One away from other men: ours, and none others', may He be.

HYMN VIII. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 O Mighty One, bring wealth that gives delight, the victor's ever-conquering wealth, most excellent, to be our aid;

2 By means of which we may repel our foes in battle hand to hand, by Thee assisted.

3 Aided by Thee, the thunder-armed, O Mighty One, may we lift up the bolt, and conquer all our foes in fight.

4 With Thee, O Mighty One, for ally, with missile-darting heroes, may we conquer our embattled foes.

5 Mighty is He, yea supreme; greatness be His, the Thunderer: wide as the heaven extends His power,

6 Which aideth those to win them sons, who come as heroes to the fight, or singers loving holy thoughts.

7 His bounty swells like an ocean, like wide streams from the cope of heaven.

8 So also is His excellence, great, vigorous, rich in cattle, like a ripe branch to the worshipper.

9 For verily Thy mighty powers, O Mighty One, are saving helps at once unto a worshipper like me.

10 So are His lovely gifts; let lauds and praises be sung to the Mighty One.

HYMN IX. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 Come, O Mighty One, and delight Thee at all our gatherings, Protector, mighty in Thy strength.

2 To the Mighty One pour forth the gift, the active gladdening gift, to Him, the gladdening, omnific God.

3 O Lord of all men, fair of cheek, rejoice Thee in the gladdening lauds, present at these offerings.

4 Songs have outpoured themselves to Thee, O Strong One, the guardian Lord, and raised themselves unsatisfied.

5 Send to us bounty manifold, O Mighty One, worthy of our wish, for power supreme is only Thine.

6 O Mighty One, stimulate us, emulously fain for wealth, and glorious, O most splendid One.

7 Give, O Mighty One, wide and lofty fame, wealthy in cattle and in strength, lasting our life-time, failing not.

8 Grant us high fame, O Mighty One, grant riches bestowing thousands, those fair fruits of earth borne home in wains.

9 Praising with songs the praiseworthy who cometh to our aid, we call upon the Treasure-Lord of wealth.

10 To the lofty One, who is near at every devotion, the pious man sings forth aloud a strengthening hymn.

HYMN X. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 The chanters hymn Thee, they who say the word of praise magnify Thee. The priests have raised Thee up on high, O Lord of a hundred powers, like a pole.

2 As up he clomb from ridge to ridge and looked upon the toilsome task, the Mighty One observes this wish of his, and the rain hastens with its troop.

3 Harness Thy pair of strong bay steeds, long-maned, whose bodies fill the girths, and, O Mighty One, come to listen to our songs of praise.

4 Come hither, answer Thou the song, sing in approval, cry aloud. Good Lord, make our prayer succeed, and prosper this our devotion.

5 To the Mighty One must a laud be said, to strengthen Him who freely gives, that the Powerful may take pleasure in our friendship and offerings.

6 Him, Him we seek for friendship, Him for riches and heroic might. For He is the Powerful; He shall aid us while He gives us wealth.

7 Easy to turn and drive away, O Mighty One, is spoil bestowed by Thee. Unclose the stable of the kine, and give us wealth, O Thunder-armed.

8 The heaven and earth contain Thee not, together, in Thy wrathful mood. Win us the waters of the sky, and send us kine abundantly.

9 Hear, Thou whose ear is quick, my call; take to Thee readily my songs. O Mighty One, let this laud of mine come nearer even than Thy friend.

10 We know Thee mightiest of all, in battles hearer of our cry. Of Thee most mighty we invoke the aid that giveth thousandfold.

11 Prolong our life anew, and cause the seer to win a thousand gifts.

12 Lover of song, may these our songs on every side encompass Thee: strengthening Thee of lengthened life, may they be dear delights to Thee.

HYMN XI. God the Mighty (Indra)

1 All sacred songs have magnified the Mighty One, expansive as the sea, the best of warriors, the Lord, the very Lord of strength.

2 Strong in Thy friendship, O Mighty One, Lord of power and might, we have no fear. We glorify with praises Thee, the never-conquered conqueror.

3 The gifts of the Mighty One from of old, His saving succours, never fail, when to the praise-singers He gives the boon of substance rich in kine.

4 Crusher of forts, the young, the wise, of strength unmeasured was He, the Sustainer of each sacred rite, the Thunderer, much-extolled.

5 Lord of the thunder, Thou didst burst the cave of Vala rich in cows. The angels came pressing to Thy side, and free from terror aided Thee.

6 I, Hero, through Thy bounties am come to the flood addressing Thee. Song-lover, here the singers stand and testify to Thee thereof.

7 The wily Susna, O Mighty One, Thou o'erthrewest with Thy wondrous powers. The wise beheld this deed of Thine: now go beyond their eulogies.

8 Our songs of praise have glorified the Mighty One who ruleth by His might, whose precious gifts in thousands come, yea, even more abundantly.

HYMN XII. God the Radiant (Agni)

1 We choose God the Radiant, the messenger, the herald, master of all wealth, well skilled in this our devotion.

2 With callings ever they invoke the Radiant One, Lord of the House, Bearer of the offering, much beloved.

3 Bring the angels hither, Radiant One, for him who strews the sacred grass: Thou art our herald, meet for praise.

4 Wake up the willing angels, since Thou, O God, performest the embassage; sit on the sacred grass with them.

5 O Radiant God, to whom the holy oil is poured, burn up our enemies whom fiends protect.

6 By the light the flame is kindled, Lord of the House, wise, young, who bears the gift: the ladle is its mouth.

7 Praise the Radiant One in devotion, the Sage whose ways are ever true, the God who driveth grief away.

8 God, be Thou his strong defence who, lord of gifts, worshippeth Thee, the messenger.

9 Whoso with sacred gift would fain call upon the Radiant One to the feast of the angels, O Purifier, favour him.

10 Such, O Purifier, bright, bring hither to our devotion; to our offering bring the angels.
