Plain text of Appendix: The Odes of the Pistis Sophia

Ode 1

1 I will give thanks to You, O Lord, for You are my God; forsake me not, O Lord, for You are my hope.

2 You gave me Your judgment freely, and I was guarded by You.

3 Let them that pursue me fall, and let them not see me.

4 Let a cloud of darkness and a mist of air cover their eyes.

5 Let them be darkened, and let them not see the light, lest they overtake me.

6 Let their counsel turn to weakness, and let what they devised return upon their own head; the counsel they devised, let it not come to pass for them.

7 The mighty overcame them, and the evil they prepared fell upon themselves.

8 But my hope is in the Lord, and I will not fear, for You are my God and my deliverer.

Ode 2

1 The mercy of the Lord rests upon my head like a crown, and I shall not be parted from it; a crown of truth has been woven for me.

2 Your branches were planted in me, for they did not make a dry crown that does not sprout.

3 But it abides upon my head, and grows upon me.

4 Your fruits are full and perfect; they are filled with Your salvation.

Ode 3

1 The stream went forth and became a great and broad river.

2 And it drew all things to itself, and turned back toward the house.

3 And they were not able to shut it in cisterns, nor in places hewn out of rock, neither could the arts of them that gather waters hold it.

4 It was led down over all the earth, and it took hold of all the waters.

5 Those who dwelt in the waterless land drank; their thirst was quenched and dissolved, for drink was given them from on high.

6 Blessed are the servants of that drink, to whom the water of the Lord was entrusted.

7 The dry lips were refreshed, the faint were strengthened;

the souls of those who were breathing their last were made firm, that they should not die.

8 The limbs that were paralysed were set right; strength was given to their speech, and light to their eyes.

9 For they all drank the salvation of the Lord, and were saved by the water of life for ever.

Ode 4

1 I was delivered from my bonds; I took refuge in You, O Lord, for You were at my right hand, saving me; and You saved me and upheld me.

2 You restrained those who fought against me, and they were not found.

3 For Your face was with me, and delivered me by Your grace.

4 I was put to shame before the multitude, and cast out;

5 I became like lead in their sight.

6 Power came to me from You, and You upheld me.

7 For You set lamps at my right hand and at my left, that nothing should be dark around me.

8 You covered me with the shadow of Your mercy, and I was clothed with a robe of honour.

9 Your right hand lifted me up, and took away from me all weakness.

10 I was strengthened in Your truth, and cleansed by Your righteousness. My enemies were removed far from me, and I was justified by Your kindness, for Your rest is for ever and ever.

Ode 5

1 He who brought me down from the lofty places on high, He brought me down to those in the lower firmament.

2 He who removed what was between, and taught me concerning it.

3 He who scattered my enemies and my adversaries.

4 He who gave me authority over the bonds, to loose them; who struck down with my hand the seven-headed dragon.

5 He who set me over its root, to destroy its seed.

6 For You were with me, to help me at every time.

7 Your name preserved me.

8 Your right hand destroyed the poison of the slanderer.

9 Your hand made smooth the way for Your faithful.

10 You redeemed them from the graves, and brought them out from among the corpses.

11 You took hold of the bones of the dead, and clothed them with bodies; and to those who did not move You gave the energy of life.

12 Your way was in incorruption, and by Your command You brought the present age to its end,

13 That all might pass away and be renewed, and Your light be doubled upon them all.

14 You established Your riches among them, and they became a holy dwelling.
