Plain text of 75. The Peacock

In the name of the Great God, glorified be the exalted, precious light.

Beyond, on the shore of the sea, stands the Peacock, holding speeches, and says: "Who is like me, who is like me? To the ..... they have set me; they have made me watcher of the ....., until the world passes away. Until the world passes away, the sons of darkness come to an end, and the vein of water is cut off from them. Me, the Peacock, my Lord has let stumble and has made watcher of the ....., My heart fell into discord, into discord fell my heart, and my thoughts began to waver. I said: 'Who has done to the Mighty One what He does to me?' I, the Peacock, opened my mouth and said to the great ones: 'Against which of you who has erred and caused others to fall has the Great One raised a quarrel, as He took my, the Peacock's, folly amiss and made me watcher of the ..... until the world ceases?'

When the Great One had dealt with me thus, my, the Peacock's, heart slipped down from its support, and I said: 'What sin have I committed against the house of the great God, that my Lord brought me down from my throne and set me from my place at the end of the worlds? At the end of the worlds He has set me, until the world ceases. Until the world ceases and the sons of darkness perish. The sons of darkness perish, and the vein of water is cut off from them. They sink down into the darkness, while the sons of light keep their place.' When the Great One had dealt with me thus, my heart slipped down from its support, and I said to myself: 'Why should I stand and worship and praise God, my Lord, when He does not accept my goodness on high, but has let me stumble, brought me down from my place and made me watcher of the .....?' ..... God has dealt with me.' I said to myself: 'Woe to me, the Peacock, whose folly is greater than his virtue, whom his beauty has ruined, and whom the words of his mouth and his pride have held back. Woe to you, whom your beauty has ruined and the words of the mouth have abased.' I spoke out and said to the Great One: 'Why was I not submissive like the water that comes from the mouth of the Euphrates? Why was I not wise, when all fools, more than I, the first of all rebels, showed themselves so submissive? Why was I not truthful, so that my mouth was without lie? Why was I not upright, like a table that is set before the hungry? They eat and are satisfied from it, then they rise and submit themselves to their Lord. Hibil showed himself submissive to his Lord, therefore He called him a beloved servant. But the Peacock, who would not submit himself, He called a rebellious servant. My Lord will not accept [my goodness] on high.'"

When the Peacock spoke thus, his cry rose before his Lord on high. When his Lord heard his cry, He wrote him a letter of truth, cast it into my dwelling and said to me: "The Great One has made a covenant of faith with you; now remove the raging from your mind." When the Peacock heard this, he grew calm, and his heart settled again upon its support. He stood up, bowed down and praised his Lord beyond measure.

And God is victorious.
