Plain text of The Creation of the World

62.

In the name of God, the Ever-Living, the Great, may the sublime Light be glorified.

When the Tibil did not yet exist and the world was not yet made, when the condensing was not yet carried out and brought about, when the water was still black, then, by God's command, Hibil-Ziwa and Sitil and Sihlun and Ajar arose and came; they came to the Tibil and took their stand. Hibil cast up the dam, measured the water and divided it into channels. As Sihlun stood there, he filled his mind with poison against Hibil-Ziwa and Ajar-Ziwa and said to them: "My brothers, you simple angels, angels without splendour and beauty. From this world to which you have brought me, no earth will arise and no heaven be formed. The black water will not dry, and the earth from this world which you have made will not come into being. How should Adam have Eve his wife, how should he have his sons? How should they fall, how rise? How should the dwellings arise? How should Adam receive strength, how should spices come to him? How should fragrant plants and spices arise for Adam from this black water? How should a wife arise for him? How shall the old myrtle and the other fragrant plants be planted, how shall Maru-astargan be planted? How shall Qmamir-Ziwa appear here? How shall he plant flowers and herbs here, and how shall healing plants and seeds arise from this black water? How shall the artful Greek earth take shape, and how shall stallions, cattle and the plough come into being? How shall the earth be made, how ploughed, and seed then fall into the earth? How shall the children of Adam go, with what shall they reap the grain, with what grind it, how shall Adam make and eat the pihta? How shall the white lamb arise? How shall she sink down, how rise, how conceive, how bear? How shall the wheels of light be made that grind for Adam, that he may eat? How shall the heaven and the birds arise? How shall the white dove be made, to be a companion to Adam?"

When Sihlun said this, Ptahil came up and said to him: "By God's leave I will form the condensation, and let Ajar blow over it. I will shovel away the black water, and let Hibil form a hollow for it. I will form the earth, and we will bring the garment from Ur. Let Hibil and Sitil stretch out the canopy."

Then Sihlun became full of wrath, struck Ptahil and said to him: "You are a wrongdoer, son of a wrongdoer, whose kindness the Living One will not accept. Who are you among the angels and the men, that you want to make the world?" As Sihlun spoke thus, Ptahil plunged into the black water. Ptahil shovelled away the black water, and Hibil and Sitil made a hollow for the water. Ptahil shovelled the earth of the Tibil together, as if there had never been water on it. Ajar beat with his wings, and while Sihlun still stood there, the dry land appeared. Ptahil drove in pillars, Hibil stretched out the heaven, Sitil formed the wheels, and Anosh fastened them to it. Hibil went quickly; Yosmir, Zihrun and Bihrun became carpenters. They put the ship together and made for it a prow and a stern. Hibil made a ..., brought the Jordan and laid it in a circle beneath the earth Tibil. He set a measurer, who measured the water and poured living water into the turbid water. When it entered the turbid water, the living water lamented and wept. When it entered the turbid water, when he mixed the living water under the turbid water, darkness entered the light. Then they brought Joshamin, set him over the Tibil and said to him: "Give us your sons, that they may circle in the Tibil and give light to this world. We shall raise up and found tribes, in which you shall take your share."

Then they brought Shamish and Zihrun, they brought Sin the Great and Sadrel, they brought them and set them at the Jordan and said to them: "Rise in the Tibil for the day, and when they are covered, you, Sin, rise for the night, that no strife may arise on earth and in heaven, and that the demons may gain no power over Adam and his wife." They then set Shamish for the day and Sin for the night, and they brought Libat (Venus) the Great and Bel (Jupiter) the Great and Kewan (Saturn) the Great and Nirig (Mars) the Great, and built them ships, that each might run in its course.

And praised be God.
