Plain text of Admonitions
43.
It is the voice of Manda d-Haije, who comes into the world bringing God's judgement. He pronounces God's judgement on the Ganzibras and angers the temple overseers. He pronounces it on those who teach prayer for pay and teach almsgiving for what has been given them. Wages and alms were given them, and they carried them into their treasure-house and hid them there. They carried them into their treasure-house and hid them there, because the word of life has gone out of their minds.
It is the voice of Manda d-Haije, who calls and teaches all his friends: "Let yourselves be warned through me, my brothers; let yourselves be warned through me, my friends! Let yourselves be warned through me, my brothers, of the death that the temple overseers die. As soon as their mouth opens they die, and as soon as their eyes close they are called to account for their souls. For there they will have a test to pass. A test they will have to pass there." He says to them: "Come to me, you teachers, of whom much is demanded and who will not give; they are cast down. Come to me, you pupils, who are taught and do not wish to learn." There God judges father and son, judges teacher and pupil, judges mother and daughter, judges there mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. There He judges the servant and his master, the hired man and his employer. All lawsuits are judged, and all are settled, except the quarrel between husband and wife, until the Great One stands by him in the case, acquits him, lifts him up and sets him upright in the house of completion.
God is exalted and victorious, and victorious is the man who went forth to this place.
44.
The voice of life calls: "Blessed is he who understands himself. A man who understands himself has no equal in the world. Blessed are you, upright servants, who have kept yourselves far from all evil. Woe to you, evil heart, ruled by wickedness, which does not let wickedness rest in good kindness; and woe to the mind of the tyrant who is filled with the wrath of Satan. He who gives free rein to passion will have to dwell in the depths. He who opens his mouth to curse will not behold the place of light. If someone raises his hands to strike, they will kill their own master with the sword. Woe to you, wide belly, who could not be satisfied with this world. To you I call and speak, you men who give alms. If you give, do not testify to it; if you have testified once, do not do it again. If you give with your right hand, do not tell your left. Woe to the wise man who has not taught his wisdom. Woe to the builder who has built no building for himself. Woe to the road-maker who has levelled no road for himself. He does not ascend to behold the place of light."
God is exalted and victorious, and victorious is the man who went forth to this place.
45.
The voice of life calls, the voice of the mighty life.
The voice of life calls: "Let everyone take heed of himself. Blessed is he who knows himself, and whose heart is a builder for him. Blessed are the people of truth: they ascend and behold the place of light. Woe to the counsellor who has given himself no counsel. Woe to the road-maker who has levelled no road for himself, that he may not slip when he walks upon it. Woe to the builder who has erected no building for himself. Woe to envy, because of which the wicked of this world are never satisfied. Woe to the wide belly, which, however much it eats, is never full. Woe to the double tongue, which passes two different judgements on the same case. Woe to the learners who are taught but do not wish to learn. Woe to the simple fools who remain stuck in their folly. Woe to the wise man who has not taught his wisdom. Woe to the rulers who rule over the forsaken and do no fair deeds. They fall into the blazing fire; with their hands they stoke the coals, and with their lips they fan the flame. Woe to the evil heart, which is ruled by wickedness. Wickedness rules it, and therefore it will end with the end of the world. It will end, and will not behold the place of light. Blessed is he who has done good; woe, woe, cries he who has done evil. Woe to the man who had wealth and did no good with his goods. He has committed sins for himself and heaped up stumbling-blocks before himself. Blessed is the man who had wealth and did good with his goods; he has prepared a reward for himself. His works go before him, his works go before him and form a support for him on the way. Let your hands do what is upright, that you may ascend and behold the place of light."
And God is victorious.
