Plain text of Truth's Questions
1.
In the name of the great Life, glorified be the exalted Light.
At the gate of the worlds Truth stands and asks, calling out into the world. She says: "Tell me: How thick is the earth? How great is the height from the earth to the vault of heaven? Of what was Adam made, and of what was Eve, his wife? Whence came the wine and its vessel, and the sacred drink of the world beyond? From whose dwelling has this oil, the son of the white sesame, come to me? From whose river does this living water come? Tell me, how many thousands of angels dwell beneath the Vine of Yosmir? Tell me, how many thousands of angels dwell beneath the Vine of Sar? Tell me, how many thousands of angels dwell beneath the Vine of Pirun? Who raised the loud cry, and who startled the angels in their places? Who cast down the great strife that will not be settled in all eternity? And who caused the mighty breach of the waters that will not be closed in all eternity? Who became the guardian of the structure until the end of the worlds? Tell me, upon what does the Throne of the great and mighty God rest? Tell me, how many thousands of angels are gathered on the right of the Throne of the great and mighty God? Tell me, how many thousands of angels are gathered on its left? Tell me, how many thousands of angels stand before the Throne of the great and mighty God? Tell me, what are the names of the three robes of splendour, light and glory? Tell me, who revealed speech and the answering of prayer to the angels in their dwellings? Tell me, which of the angels takes the jar of incense and brings it before God? Tell me, which of the angels receives prayer and praise, brings it to his treasure-house and keeps it there? Tell me, in whose loins is the child formed when it is formed? When it is in the mother, whose fragrance does it breathe? What evil spirit crouches by the bed of the pregnant woman?"
Then Ptahil answered and said: "I will tell you the truth, and I will teach you how it came to be. The thickness of the earth is twelve thousand miles. From the earth to the vault of heaven the height is twelve thousand miles. Adam was formed of clay; Eve, his wife, came forth from her own source of origin. This oil, the son of the white sesame, came from the dwelling of Yosmir-Ziwa. This living water comes from the basin of the river. Beneath the Vine of Yosmir dwell twelve thousand angels. Beneath the Vine of Sar dwell twelve thousand angels. Beneath the Vine of Pirun dwell twenty-four thousand angels. Yosamin cast down the great strife that will not be settled in all eternity. Abathur caused the mighty breach of the waters that will not be closed in all eternity. I, Ptahil, became the guardian of the structure until the end of the worlds. The Throne of the great and mighty God rests upon the Word of the Living God. On the right of the Throne of the great and mighty God are gathered twelve thousand angels. On its left are gathered twelve thousand angels. Before the Throne of the great and mighty God stand twenty-four thousand angels. The names of the three robes of splendour, light and glory are each spoken in its own place. The angel Singilan takes the jar of incense and brings it before God. The angel Samandirel receives prayer and praise, brings it to his treasure-house and keeps it there. When the child is formed, it is formed in the loins of the father; then it is taken from the father's loins and cast into the womb of the mother. When the child comes into being in the mother's womb, it breathes the fragrance of life. By the bed of the pregnant woman crouches the evil spirit Zahriel."
The Living God is exalted and victorious, and victorious is the man who has come here.
2.
In the name of the great Life, glorified be the exalted Light.
At the gate of the worlds Truth stands and asks: "Who revealed the secret of the Great One, and who cast strife into the light? Who shook the dwellings, and who brought a tremor upon Siniawis? Who put Ur in fetters, and who cast Yosamin down from his place? Why did they appoint Abathur judge, and why did they bring fault into the world? Who betrayed the word to the Spirit of evil, and who disclosed Truth to her in the world? Who had brought rest, and who then made tumult on high? Who overturned the great judgement, and who cast battle into the world? Who laid waste the works of creation, and who revealed the secret of the light? Who threw the dwellings into confusion, and who spoke the word as it was not? Who brought the great weapon and cast battle into the world? Who took the praise, shattered it and threw it hither and thither? And who in turn called out the praise and let the call of the Living God be heard, quite without compare?"
When Truth had spoken thus, Yokashar reflected and said: "I will proclaim the truth to you, I will make clear to you how it was.
Yosamin revealed the secret of the Great One and cast strife into the light.
Hibil stirred up the dwellings and brought a tremor upon Siniawis. He brought a tremor upon Siniawis and revealed the secret of the darkness.
Ur was bound by the Word of God with a fetter without end.
Yosamin was cast down because he wished to stir up battle and to throw strife into the house of the Mighty. He plotted evil; therefore he was bound with a fetter, to sit in it for ever. His own mouth humbled Yosamin, because he did not keep to the order. He was heedless and would not bow; therefore he was not named like the angels.
They made Abathur judge, because Hibil-Ziwa had cast him down. He saw Ptahil in the black water, and called out to him from his dwelling and said: 'I am of noble rank, so I wish to be called noble from now on.' He said: 'I will raise a wall around my dwelling, then my strength will be doubled.' He called Ptahil up into his dwelling and let him take his place there. Abathur rebelled against his Lord; he strove for the lower dwelling, and so he was brought down from his throne; he went, and was appointed over the Balance.
Abathur weeps and laments, and his lament rises and reaches on high: 'He who has done good finds ugliness; he who has done evil finds good. I said to myself that I would be great; who has made me small in the world? I said to myself that I would be a king; who has set me at the end of the world? I said to myself that I would be a man of rank; who has placed the Balance in my hand? When I was gentle and humble, why did they make me a rebel?'
Manda d-Haiye, the messenger of the knowledge of life, revealed the word to the Spirit of evil and cast strife into the house of the Living. Truth was disclosed to her Gubran, and all the rivers were stirred up. Yokabar brought rest, but Yosamin cast tumult into the world.
Ptahil laid waste the works of creation, and Anan revealed the secret of the light.
Ethinsib disturbed the dwellings; Bihram spoke the word as it was not. Ptahil brought the great weapon, and Nibta cast strife into the world.
Hibil the angel took the praise, shattered it and threw it hither and thither. So Ethinsib raised the call on high, and the call ascended.
And the Living God is victorious.
