Plain text of Hymns of Praise to God (from the Papyrus of Ani)
These hymns are good, typical examples of the songs of praise and thanksgiving addressed to God by the Egyptians under the Eighteenth Dynasty.
A Hymn of Praise when the Sun Rises on the Horizon and when It Sets in the Land of Life
Praise be to Thee, O God, whose sign rises in the horizon.
Thou art adored. Thy beauties are before my eyes, and Thy light falls upon my body.
Thou causest the sun to go to its setting with a fair course, and Thy will is done. The whole creation rejoices.
Thou rulest the heavens in peace, all who oppose Thee being cast down.
The stars which never rest, and the stars which never vanish, glorify Thee as they sink to rest in the horizon.
Thou art beautiful at morn and at eve, O Thou Living Lord, the Unchanging One, my Lord.
Praise be to Thee, who causest the sun to rise and to set in beauty.
Thou art King of the heavens, and the angels serve Thee.
Truth and justice attend Thee at morn and eve.
Joyfully Thou rulest the heavens, and all creation is content thereat. Thine enemy Satan is cast down headlong; his power is cut off, and his might is broken.
The sun has a fair course, and comes in due time to its place.
The angels of the South, the North, the West and the East praise Thee, O Thou from whom all forms of life sprang.
Thou speakest, and the earth is flooded with silence, O Thou Only One, who wast before ever the earth and the mountains came into being.
O Shepherd, O Lord, O Only One, Creator of what is, Thou hast given every tongue its speech. Thou hast made all that sprang from the waters.
Let me breathe the air which Thou hast sent, and the north wind which is from Thy mercy. Glorify my spirit, O God, and make my soul righteous.
O Lord of all that is in the heavens, Thou art praised at the setting of the sun in peace, and Thou art exalted because of all Thy wondrous works.
Let Thy light shine upon my body each day.
A Hymn of Praise when the Sun Rises in the East
Hail, O God, Lord of Light, whose sign rises on the horizon day by day! Let Thy light fall upon the face of Thy servant Ani, the truth-speaker, who sings hymns to Thee at dawn and adores Thee at eventide. Let his soul be with the righteous in the Garden. Let him journey in peace and arrive safely, and let him make his way among the stars that never vanish.
Praise be to Thee, O Lord of the two horizons, the Ever-Existent, who wast never created!
When Thy light rises and spreads over the lands of the South and the North, it is beautiful, yea beautiful, and all the angels rejoice at Thy signs, O King of Heaven.
All who dwell in the unseen realm come to meet Thee; they bow before Thee in homage at the sight of Thy beautiful creation.
I would come before Thee daily in prayer, and behold Thy beautiful sign. Let me be neither prevented nor repulsed.
Grant that when I look upon Thy signs my body may be made young again in the Garden, even as the bodies of Thy favoured ones.
I am one who worshipped Thee on earth. Let me enter the Eternal Land, the Everlasting Country. O my Lord, I beseech Thee to decree this for me.
Praise be to Thee, who causest the sun to rise in the horizon, and who restest all upon truth!
Thou passest the sun over the sky; every face watches its course, while Thou Thyself art unseen. Thou showest Thy sign at dawn and at eve daily.
Thy will goes forth mightily; Thy light falls upon every face; the variegated lights and colours of Thy creation cannot be numbered, and cannot be told ...
Thou alone, by Thyself, art One. Before all things Thou wast.
May I go forward as Thy sun advances without pause and in a moment passes over untold leagues; and as it sinks to rest, even so may I.
Thou art crowned with the majesty of Thy beauties.
Grant that I may come into the everlasting Garden and the dwelling where Thy favoured ones abide. Let me join myself to those who are holy and perfect in the realm to come, and let me be with them to behold Thy signs at eventide. I lift my hands to Thee in adoration when Thy sign sets, O Thou the Living One. Thou art the Eternal Creator, and Thou art adored.
I have given my heart to Thee without wavering, O Thou who art the Mightiest ...
