Plain text of Hymn to God by Ai (continued)
1 ... the king who lives in truth, Lord of Crowns, Aakhun-Aten (Servant of God), great in the span of his life, and the great royal wife whom he loves, Lady of the Two Lands, Nefer-neferu-Aten Nefertiti: may they live in health and strength for as long as God has decreed for them.
2 He, Ai, the fan-bearer and Master of the King's Horse, says:
Beautiful is the rising of Thy sign in the horizon of heaven, O God, Ordainer of life. Thou causest the light to shoot up in the horizon of the East, and Thou fillest every land with Thy beneficence. Thou art beautiful, great and sparkling, and exalted above every land. The rays of Thy light reach everywhere, to all the lands which Thou hast made.
3 Thou art the Radiant One (Ra). Thou bringest them according to their number, and Thou subduest them for Thy beloved servant. Thou Thyself art far above, yet Thy light is upon the earth; it is before their faces, and they marvel at Thy ways.
When Thy sign sets in the horizon of the west, the earth is in darkness, like the state of death. Men lie down in their chambers wrapped in cloths, and one eye cannot see its fellow. If all their possessions, which are under their heads, were carried away, they would not perceive it.
4 Every lion comes out of his lair, and all the creeping things bite; darkness is a warm retreat. The land is in silence, for He who made them has withdrawn His sign beyond the horizon.
The earth becomes light, Thy sign rises in the horizon, shining by day, and Thou scatterest the darkness. Thou sendest out Thy rays, and the Two Lands make festival. Men wake up and stand upon their feet, for it is Thou who raisest them up. They wash their limbs, they take their apparel,
5 and array themselves therein; their hands are stretched out in praise when Thy light rises, and throughout the land they do their work.
Beasts and cattle of all kinds settle down upon the pastures; shrubs and vegetables flourish; the feathered fowl fly about over their marshes, their wings praising Thee. All the cattle rise up on their legs; creatures that fly and insects of all kinds
6 spring into life when Thy light rises upon them.
The boats drop down and sail up the river; likewise every road opens at Thy sun's rising. The fish in the river swim towards the light, and Thy rays reach into the depths of the Great Green Sea.
Thou makest offspring to take form in women, and createst seed in men. Thou makest the child live in the womb of his mother, and Thou quietest him so that he does not cry. Thou art his nurse in the womb,
7 giving breath to vivify that which Thou hast made. When he comes forth from the womb on the day of his birth, he opens his mouth in due manner, and Thou providest his sustenance.
The young bird in the egg speaks in the shell; Thou givest it breath inside it to make it live. Thou makest for it its mature form, so that it can crack the shell inside the egg. It comes forth from the egg and chirps with all its might; when it has come forth from it, it walks upon its two feet.
O how many are the things which Thou hast made!
They are hidden from the face of men, O Thou
8 One God, like whom there is no other. Thou didst create the earth by Thy will, Thou alone existing: men and women, cattle, and beasts of every kind that are upon the earth and that move upon feet, and all the creatures that are in the sky and fly with their wings, and the deserts of Syria and Kush, and the land of Egypt.
Thou settest every person in his place. Thou providest their daily food, every man having the portion allotted to him, and Thou dost determine the duration of his life. Their tongues are different in speech, their characteristics, and
9 likewise their skins in colour, for Thou hast given distinguishing marks to the dwellers in foreign lands.
Thou bringest forth the Nile from the depths of the earth, and Thou bringest it when Thou wishest, to make mortals live, inasmuch as Thou hast made them, their Lord who supports them to the uttermost, O Lord of every land. Thy sign shines upon them, O God of the day, Thou great one of majesty.
Thou makest the life of all remote lands. Thou settest a Nile in heaven, which comes down to them.
10 It makes a flood on the mountains like the Great Green Sea, and waters their fields in their villages. How beneficent are Thy plans, O Lord of Eternity! A Nile in heaven art Thou for the dwellers in foreign lands, and for all the beasts of the desert that go upon their feet. The Nile comes up from the depths of the earth for the land of Egypt. Thy light nourishes every field; when it rises they live, and they germinate for Thee.
Thou makest the seasons to develop everything that Thou hast made: the season of Pert (winter, from mid-November to mid-March), so that they may be refreshed, and the season of Heh (summer, from mid-March to mid-November), so that they may feel Thy warmth.
11 Thou hast made the remote heaven that Thou mayest shine therein and look upon everything that Thou hast made. Thy being is one. Thou shinest by Thy signs among Thy creatures, the sun rising, shining, departing afar off, and returning. Thou hast made millions of creations by Thy one will: towns and cities, villages, fields, roads and rivers. Every eye beholds Thy sign confronting it. Thou art God of the day at its zenith.
12 At the departure of Thy sign ... Thou didst create their faces so that ... One Thou didst make ... Thou art ever in my heart.
13 There is none who knows Thee truly except Thy servant Nefer-kheperu-Ra Ua-en-Ra. Thou hast made him wise to understand Thy plans and Thy power. The earth came into being by Thy hand, even as Thou hast created men. By Thy light they rise and live; when it sets they lie as the dead. Duration of life is in Thy hand; life is by Thee. All eyes gaze upon the beauties of Thy creation until the sun sets, when all labours are laid down. Thou dost set the sun in the West, and Thou makest it rise again, making to flourish ... for the king. Every man who stands upon his feet, since Thou didst lay the foundation of the earth, Thou hast raised up for Thy servant the King of the South and the North, living in truth, Lord of Crowns, Aakhun-Aten, great in the span of his life, and for the Royal Wife, great of majesty, Lady of the Two Lands, Nefer-neferu-Aten Nefertiti, may they live and be young for the span God has decreed.
