Plain text of Book Two · Seventeenth Section
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life,
in whom is no unfaithfulness and craft.
In me is no unfaithfulness and craft,
no speech of violence.
I did not wink or blink
and did not dwell as a guilty one among the guilty.
Wherein have I sinned against the Living One,
against the Great One who is enthroned there?
Wherein have I sinned against the Hidden One,
that I came into captivity and exile,
into the captivity into which the ages brought me,
into the plunder which the worlds committed against me?
If only they had not sent me to dwell in your garment,
in the plunder which the ages committed!
"We did not say that you, soul,
should fall into the captivity of the ages,
that you should fall into the captivity of the ages,
nor that the worlds should plunder you.
Rather it is dear to us
that you remain firm and endure and not be taken captive.
Listen to the call that we call to you,
put your trust in it.
In trust in us
you will ascend with us to your place.
You will be set upright behind us,
and we will bless you."
"In accordance with what You, Great One, told me,
a voice comes to me daily.
Daily a voice calls to me
and wakes me, that I may not stumble.
When You call to me,
the evil worlds do not catch me.
The evil worlds do not catch me,
and I do not fall into the plunder of the ages."
What I said to Him pleased the Great One.
Daily He created and sent me
voice, strength and speech.
He created and sent me
voice, strength and speech,
and what the Great One sent me
woke my heart, that I might not stumble.
As long as he heard the call of the Living One,
he did not change what the Mighty One had charged him with.
I endured so long, I persevered so long,
as the Great One wished.
When the Great One wishes me,
He will keep me in His treasure.
He will say to me: "Come, soul,
you who let yourself be instructed and endured (much) from the world.
We shall support you
and forgive you sin and guilt.
Sin and guilt We shall forgive you,
because you listened to Us and endured (much) from the world." —
And God is victorious.
