Plain text of Book Two · Fourteenth Section
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life.
They drove him out of the house of his brothers
and sent him into this world.
Into this world they sent him,
to come and dwell in the desolate wilderness,
to come and keep watch over the wilderness;
the planets looked out and saw him.
The planets looked out and saw him,
who are perverse and twisted.
Their mouth is open;
it is like the Reed Sea.
Their lips are like consuming fire.
Their smell is foul and loathsome.
How wicked and base they are!
I saw them, and I fell into fear, and dread came over me.
I fell into fear, and dread came over me,
because my helper is not with me.
My helper is not with me, he is not there;
if only I am not cut off!
But God, the Great, knew
that fear had come upon the soul.
Then the call of the great helper came,
who called to the soul in the world.
He said to him:
"What did you see, Adam, that you fell into fear,
why did anxiety and dread come over you?
If you have seen the ugly spirits,
I will grant you their downfall.
Because of the ugly devs who frightened you,
I will tell you with what they will be bound.
Over their mouth, which is like the Reed Sea,
their own darkness will come.
Over their lips, which are like consuming fire,
a great binding will come."
It is the voice of the gentle soul
that calls to his helper.
He says to him:
"O my guide! If right order prevailed,
why did Ptahil go forth from his place?
Why did Ptahil go forth from his place,
why did he sow evil seed
and give rise to worthless tongues?"
Then came the voice of the great helper,
who called to the soul in the world:
"Be calm and silent, Adam,
and let the peace of the righteous embrace you.
See to it, if you are pained and anxious,
see to it that you do not curse Ptahil.
Do not curse Ptahil the angel,
the angel who separated himself from our midst,
the angel who separated himself from our midst
and then gave rise to the worthless tongues.
He is of Abathur's company,
whose elders do not condemn him to darkness.
When this world passes away
and the firmament of the angels is rolled up,
when the firmament of the angels is rolled up
and sun and moon pass away,
when sun and moon pass away
and [splendour and] brightness are taken from them,
when splendour and brightness are taken from them,
the guardians keep watch over it
and there is no longer a glimmer in the stars altogether,
when these works pass away,
Ptahil's garment will be set right.
Ptahil's garment will be set right for him,
and he will be purified here in the Jordan.
Here in the Jordan he will be purified,
and he will forget all the persecution that he endured.
Then Ptahil and you, soul,
will shine in one abode,
and he will be counted among your companions,
soul."
Thus spoke the helper,
and the soul relied on him.
Though he had to endure persecution and malice,
he did not curse Ptahil,
but forgave him his sins and transgressions.
He said:
"O my Lord, look upon me, look upon me,
send my helper to reach me, come to me and deliver me,
show me my way,
which all my brothers walk."
When the helper heard his cry,
he answered him from the fruits of splendour.
He took him by the palm of the right hand
and led him past the watch-houses.
Past the watch-houses he led him
and let him pass the scale.
The scale he let him pass
and brought him into the neighbourhood of the sons of salvation.
Into the neighbourhood of the sons of salvation he brought him
and led him over the streams of water.
He led him over the streams of water,
and he ascended together with him to the house of life.
When God looked upon him, He loved him,
clothed him in mercy and gave him a seat of honour. —
And praised be God, the Living.
