Plain text of Book Two · Eighth Section
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life,
who set out to come into the world.
To come into the world I set out,
and not all its inhabitants notice it.
Not all its inhabitants notice me,
not all worlds perceive me.
Very long the ages did not notice me,
until I was cast into the trunk.
Until I was cast into the trunk
and Adam stood upon his feet.
(Adam stood upon his feet,
while sleep overcame him.)
When Adam stood upon his feet,
he cursed the deceiver who had led him astray.
He cursed the corrupter of bodies,
in whose hands his works never came right.
Did his works ever come right in his hands,
until he led Adam astray?
Until he led Adam astray,
until Adam was made like his image,
until he was full of the fire of desire,
as his deceiver had filled him.
He worked and did not make it right,
until he made the false trunk
and the vain lodging.
They drove me away from my place
and chased me out of the midst of my brothers.
From the midst of my good brothers they chased me,
from the midst of the vigorous, the well-equipped.
When shall I leave the trunk,
give it over to annihilation and destruction,
leave its works,
close the rebellious ruin?
I shall ascend to my place,
the planets will then fall down, never to rise again.
As the soul stands and seeks to be enlightened,
his helper drew near and came to him,
together with his own protectors
and the great, good ....... who accompanied him:
"Rise, soul, leave this world!
The perversity that pained you, their own masters will take over.
The sleep from which you awoke
will turn and weigh upon them.
Rise, clothe yourself with rich splendour
and cover yourself with precious light.
Bind on the girdle of open eyes,
which is all eyes, wholly and completely."
The soul ascended from them,
and the planets give themselves to lamentation.
Daily they give themselves to lamentation,
daily they eat for me ......:
They lie on mats,
the wicked sit like prisoners.
The soul ascended to the house of life
and did not brood in mourning and lamentation.
In mourning and lamentation he did not brood,
nothing of their perversity was in him.
Nothing of their perversity was in him,
nothing did he accept from them.
The soul ......
In the hidden realm they set me up
and supported me upon the pattern of the great life. —
And praised be God, the Great Life.
