Plain text of Book Two · Fourth Section
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life.
Who brought me out of my treasure-house?
Out of my treasure-house, who brought me,
who cast me into the house of the Fourth?
Who cast me into the house of the Fourth,
that the wicked are angry with me?
The wicked are angry with me
and plan evil against me daily.
They plot against me in evil plotting
and say:
"We will cut him off among us, we will keep him back among us
and shut him off from his place of origin.
We will shut him off from his place of origin,
and let him become a portion of us."
The soul reflects and says:
"Perhaps they will cut me off from the place of origin of my Lord."
As the soul stands and reflects,
the man, his helper, comes.
His great helper comes,
who brought him here:
"Soul! Do not brood, do not consume yourself,
and do not grieve over the transient ones.
The disgraceful transient ones are not able
to cut you off and keep you back among them.
They are not able to keep you back among them
and to shut you off from your Lord's place of origin.
The strength of your Lord is with you,
and the speech of the angels rests upon you."
When the soul heard this,
he brooded no more upon evil
and brought to nothing the plans of the transient ones.
He called out with a loud voice
and bore witness to the shoot of light.
He called out with exalted praise of the world beyond,
and the great helper came to him.
[The great helper came to him]
and took him out of the world:
"Rise, soul, come with me,
go with me to your place.
Put on your hidden garment,
to which neither corruption nor wrath cling.
Corruption and wrath do not cling to it:
the angels put it on and are resplendent."
The treasure that he bestowed on him, God accepted;
the messenger who came to him was victorious.
God raised the soul upright,
and the messengers set him in his place. —
And God is victorious.
