Plain text of Book Two · First Section
In the name of God, the Great,
be glorified the exalted light. —
A soul am I of the Great Life,
a soul am I of the mighty Life,
a soul am I of the Great Life.
Who let me dwell in the Tibil?
In the Tibil, who let me dwell,
who threw me into the bodily trunk?
Who threw me into the bodily trunk,
which is without hands and feet?
It has neither hands nor feet
and does not know how to walk.
It lies and crawls
and is without strength.
Why did they call me away from my place,
bring me here and throw me into the trunk?
My feet are feet of splendour;
now they must serve the trunk for walking.
My mouth is a pure mouth;
now it has become a mouth for the trunk.
My eyes, which were opened from the place of light,
now belong to the trunk.
My heart, which longs for life,
came and fell to the lot of the trunk.
My mind, in which life dwells,
they have poured here into bodily wrappings.
My feet were planted by chosen planters;
now they stand on the path of the trunk.
The path of the trunk it is;
the Seven do not leave me on my own path.
How I must obey, how I must endure,
how I must calm my mind!
How I must hear of the seven and twelve mysteries,
how I must groan!
How must the speech of my gentle Lord
dwell among the dark beings!
When the soul had said this,
his cry rose up to the place of light.
My Lord heard my cry
and sent His messenger to me:
"Go, My pure messenger,
show yourself to the soul, that he may shine.
If you do not show yourself to the soul,
the transient ones will despise him."
In hidden splendour stood
the messenger who came to him.
He stood in splendour
and showed himself to the soul, the servant of the Mighty One.
He cried and let him hear his voice
and set his heart upright upon its support:
"Shine and be enlightened, soul!
I have come to you and will not leave you.
When they call you,
ascend to the place of light.
Me God created,
and sent to you.
Rise, leave, soul,
the trunk into which you were thrown,
the trunk in which you grew up,
which is without hands and feet.
Rise, ascend to your original home,
to your good seat among the angels.
Dwell among the angels, your brothers,
sit there as you are accustomed.
Seek out your homeland
and curse the world of deception in which you dwelt.
Let your splendour remain with you,
be established in your hidden light.
Let your splendour come before you,
and let your light be made firm behind you.
Let your seat of honour be set up as it was set up,
and the Seven will be without good fortune."
And God is victorious.
