In the name of God, the Living.

This is the splendour and the light of God.

When the spirit and the soul departed from the body, from the coat of blood and flesh, from the boiling cauldron, from the heated ovens, from the ditches and pits, this soul went on and came upon a watch-house in which instruments, stocks, torment and pain are gathered together, where the guilty souls are judged with lawless justice. With a whip of fire the sorcerers and witches are scourged; like worms they are cast into the mouths of the ovens.

As this soul stands in its place, it trembles and quakes, and its whole form trembles in its garment. It calls upon God, the great, the exalted Life, and says: "Where is God, whom I loved? Where is the truth (Kushta) that took its place in my heart? Where is the almsgiving that I carried in my pocket?"

Then they answer her: "O soul! You are ascending to the place of light; why do you call upon the great, exalted Life? Give up your name and your sign, which you drew from the waves of water, from the treasures of splendour, from the great, exalted basin, from the great Jordan of healings and from the mighty springs of light."

As this soul stands in its place, it opens its mouth, calls, declares and gives up its name, its sign, its blessing and its baptism, and whatever else it drew from the waves of water, from the treasures of splendour, from the great, exalted basin, from the great Jordan of healings, from the mighty springs of light and from God, the great and exalted. Then the accursed fell upon their faces and said to her: "Go, soul, run and arrive, escape, ascend, plead your case and prevail, speak and be heard, remember us before God, the great and exalted."

Then she answers them: "Who is to remember you before the great God? You are mighty ones, we are weaklings; you are lords, we are men; your own deeds and works will remember you."

I ascend, and the angels (Uthras), my brothers, ascend before me. I ask the angels, my brothers, and say to them: "Whose watch-house is this, and who is fettered in it?" Then the angels, my brothers, answer me: "This watch-house is that of Nbaz, the power of heaven, the great anvil of the earth. At the gate of the worlds a throne is set for him, and his train stretches over all seas. His head is struck upon the ......, and his feet rest on the lower Abaddons of darkness." They said further: "In this watch-house are bound the clerics, priests and soothsayers, the aloof and haughty who separate themselves from one another, the men who abandon their wives and the women who abandon their husbands, who shift boundaries and move boundary stones. They are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, fear, terror and trembling were no longer before me. This soul then went on and came upon another watch-house in which instruments, stocks, torment, oppression and pain are gathered together, where the souls of the wicked are judged with lawless justice. With a whip of fire the sorcerers and witches are scourged; like worms they are cast into the mouths of the cauldrons.

I ascend, and the angels, my brothers, ascend before me. I ask the angels, my brothers, and say to them: "Whose watch-house is this, and who is fettered in it?" In answer to my question they say to me: "This watch-house is that of Nbu, the wise scribe, before whom these books of his are laid and on whose hands his book of remembrance lies. At the head of his book 'Woe' is written for him; at the end of his book he cries: Woe, woe!" They said further to me: "In this watch-house are the eminent and aloof scribes, who see with their eyes, hear with their ears, call with their mouths, know in their hearts, and yet do nothing good. They are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, fear and terror were no longer before me. I ascend, and the angels, my brothers, the sons of light, ascend before me. I say to the angels, my brothers: "Whose watch-house is this, and who is fettered in it?" Then they answer me: "This watch-house is that of the seven forms which Ptahil called forth. They are clothed with roses, covered with roses. A wreath of fornication and harlotry is laid upon their heads. Fornication and shame are laid in their bosoms. Their breasts are bared to shame, their sides slit open for transgressions. Strife is cast down for them, discord spread out for them, and their heads are veiled."

I ask further and say: "Who is fettered in this watch-house which Ptahil called forth?" Then the angels, my brothers, answer me: "In this watch-house are fettered those who go to the idol-house of Tammuz, sit there twenty-eight days, slaughter sheep, mix cups, cast down cakes, and sit mourning in the house of Dilbat. The soothsayers, male and female, the sorcerers and witches, the fornicators, male and female, the thieves, male and female, those who stand at the doors of their companions and listen for the words, who open doors which their hands did not close, who break what their hands did not seal, who loose bonds which their hands did not fasten, who take what their hands did not lay down, who sell their milk, kill their own children and nurse the children of their companions, begging for morsels and cups, who kill their own children and nurse the children of their companions: these are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, fear and terror were no longer before me. Then they answer me: "In this watch-house dwell the great ones who take with large measures and give with small measures, who take interest and interest upon interest. They are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, fear, terror and trembling were no longer before me. Give up your name and your sign, your blessing and your baptism, and whatever else is in you, which you drew from the waves of water, from the treasures of splendour, from the mighty springs of light, from the great, exalted basin, from the great Jordan of healings and from God, the great and exalted."

I ascend, and the angels, the sons of light, ascend before me. I ask the angels, my brothers, and say to them: "Whose watch-house is this, who guards it, and who is fettered in it?" In answer to my question they say to me: "This watch-house is that of the false messiah, the deceiver, the son of the spirit of falsehood, who set himself up as a god over the Nasoraeans." They say further to me: "In this watch-house are fettered the 'holy' men and women, the virginal men and women, the unmarried men and women, the men who desire no women and the women who desire no men, who kill their children so that they may have none, who destroy the children in their womb, who cut off their living seed that came to them from the house of life. They are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, terror and trembling were no longer before me. I went on and came upon another watch-house in which instruments, stocks, torment, oppression, fettering and pain are gathered together, where the souls of the wicked are judged with lawless justice. Then the angels answer: "This watch-house is that of Ewath, the false 'holy spirit'." They say further to me: "In this watch-house are fettered the male and female fasters, who fast a fast of wickedness and pray a prayer of falsehood, who hunger for bread and do not eat, thirst for water and do not drink, sit in mourning and lamentation, hold their heads stiffly straight and offer no greeting. They are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, fear, terror and trembling were no longer before me. Then the angels, my brothers, answer me: "In this watch-house are fettered the wicked whom Ptahil called forth. In it are fettered the great potentates and rulers who sit on thrones of rebellion, carry out their deeds with the scourge and shed blood in the Tibil. They acquit the guilty and condemn the innocent. They accept bribes and receive gifts. They twist the law and bend the law. They go out into the streets of the Tibil and say what they have not seen, tell what they have not heard, swear oaths of falsehood and bear witness to wickedness. They are fettered in this watch-house and scalded with sword, brand and fire until the Day, the Day of Judgement, until the Hour, the hours of salvation."

I passed that watch-house, and I said to myself that now anxiety, fear and terror would no longer be before me. I went on and came to the watch-house of the old, high, hidden and guarded Abathur. I ask the angels, my brothers, and say to them: "Whose watch-house is this, and who is fettered in it?" Then the angels, my brothers, answer me: "This is the watch-house of the old, high, hidden and guarded Abathur. Before him the scale is set up. He weighs works and reward. He weighs and unites the spirit with the soul. Whoever proves full weight in the weighing is lifted up and granted support in life. Whoever proves not full weight in the weighing, his case is settled there."

I ask and say: "Who is fettered in this watch-house of Abathur?" Then they answer me: "In it are fettered the Nasoraeans who were not Nasoraeans: who did not know the eve of the day and did not go to the temple on Sunday, who did not bow their heads, did not teach and performed no service, who gave the poor no alms and did not open their door to the poor, who gave themselves a false name by calling themselves Nasoraeans."

As this soul stands in its place, she looked and saw the Vine of the Ether, whose roots stand in water, whose root is the tribe of souls, whose branches are angels, and whose leaves are lamps of light. This soul took a leaf from it and laid it upon her eyes. Then the blindness was taken from her eyes, and she beheld the outer ether and the luminous dwelling. They lifted up for this soul the fold of life's garment and led her in; they stayed her upon the image of life.

Life upheld life,

life found its own.

Its own found life,

and my soul found what she hoped for.

Life to those among us who know, life to those who understand, life to the men who teach us. God stands firm in His majesty; God is victorious over all works.

In the name of God, the Great: may the fellowship and bliss of life, and a forgiver of sins, be granted to my soul, N.N., to the soul of my wife N.N., to my children N.N., N.N., to my father N.N., to my mother N.N., and to the souls of our fathers, our teachers, our brothers and our sisters, who have departed from their bodies and who still dwell in their bodies.

O gentle soul,

O ordered, well-ordered soul,

O gentle soul,

may helpers come with you,

until the scale weighs

works and reward.
