Plain text of Sixteenth Book, Eighth Piece
The wicked try to seduce the redeemer who has come down and to make him fall away, but without success.
Who, whose son is this,
whose nature is so beautiful?
So beautiful is his nature,
and he is careful in the world.
The wicked say of him:
"Let us let loose desire against him.
Desire we will let loose against him
and hold him back with us in the world.
Let him fall away, let his heart be afraid,
and let him forget what his Lord commanded him.
Let him forget the calm,
and rebellion lie upon him.
Let him forget the gentle path
and come with the sinners behind us."
I stand with the power of my Lord,
with the praise of the One, my Creator.
I held fast, my heart was not afraid,
and I did not forget what my Lord commanded me.
I did not forget the calm,
and rebellion did not lie upon me.
I did not forget the hymns and orders of prayer
and sang no vain song.
I did not forget the gentle paths
and did not go with the sinners behind them.
No, I sang hymns
and cast down the wicked of this world.
I said to them:
"Do you not know, you wicked,
that I shall not be condemned in the world?
I worshipped and praised my Lord,
who will be a helper to me."
And praised be the Living God.
