Plain text of Sixteenth Book, Fifth Piece
Since the believer came to love the Living God, he has trust in nothing else. Since he found his soul again, he longs for nothing else. By the gifts of faithfulness he is enlightened and finds the way to the place of light.
From the day I came to love the Living God,
from the day my heart came to love faithfulness,
from the day I came to love the Living God,
I have no more trust in anything in the world.
In father and mother
I have no trust in the world.
In brothers and sisters
I have no trust in the world.
In wife and child
I have no trust in the world.
In scourge and ruling power
I have no trust in the world.
In fortresses and buildings
I have no trust in the world.
In splendid garments and fine coverings
I have no trust in the world.
In things made and created
I have no trust in the world.
In the whole world and its works
I have no trust in the world.
Only after my soul do I go about (searching),
which is worth to me generations and worlds.
I went and found my soul;
what are all the worlds to me?
I ascended to the high mountains
and descended to the deep valleys.
I went and found faithfulness,
[and] my heart [rejoiced].
I went and found her,
standing at the outer edge of the worlds.
She stands there and holds three [gifts]
in her hand.
I took of them from her,
and my eyes became full of light.
I took the second,
and I made my soul bright and clear.
I took the third,
and I ascended and beheld the place of light.
Praised be You, King of Light,
who became full of mercy toward us.
And praised be the Living God.
