Plain text of Sixteenth Book · First Piece

I am the guardian of the pure Tarwan,

the son of the great Nbat.

I am the son of the great Nbat,

from the two pure mountains I came.

They clothed me with pure garments

that were created from the 360 upper Jordans of the earth of light.

My form is the form of Jawar-Ziwa,

which was created from the hidden place.

The cloud that they created for me

did not come from the darkness.

It did not come from the darkness,

there was no lack and defect in it.

There was no deficiency in it

that came from the house of the Second.

They created me, strengthened me and armed me,

they gave me instructions and created helpers for me.

They created messengers for me,

angels full of insight.

They granted me dominion over the pure Tarwan

and the whole secret word that is in it.

They spoke to me and taught me about the pure Tarwan,

which came into being from the earth of Josamin.

They taught me about the earth of the ether

and about the dear king of the ether, who was created from it.

They taught me about the earth of the ether,

which existed before the earth of the pure Tarwan.

They taught me about the earth of the great Nsab

and about the pure place of glorious splendour, which was created from the Jordan,

about the dwellings in which he (Nsab) settled,

and about the angels who sit in shining garments.

They taught me about the mighty mysteries of light

that rest beneath the throne of the King of the earth of the ether.

They armed me with armour,

so that the rebels should not sin against me.

I came to the world that the Second created,

from whom lack and defect went forth.

I sent out the call of the Living God

and planted the planting of the Great God.

The planting of the Great One I planted

and chose the chosen.

Each one I chose,

brightened them and enlightened them about the good.

I made their eyes bright

about the place where the Great One is enthroned.

I taught them by hidden hymns and orders of prayer

about prayer and praise that have come to us.

I built them into the building of the Living God

and enclosed them in the fellowship of the Living God.

I enlightened them with an enlightenment,

an enlightenment wondrous and endless.

I enlightened them with an enlightenment

and showed them an image that came from the hidden place.

When the chosen saw it,

their ailing heart was healed.

I called with an exalted voice

and made the vain wicked ones rise up.

I called with an exalted voice

and won for myself a following of the most excellent kind.

I called with an exalted voice,

which shook the sleepers and made them rise,

and the firmness of true faith set it up.

It set up ... in the house,

and they struck their sides against one another.

They struck their sides against one another,

armed themselves and took their stand in the world.

They struck their sides against one another

and did nothing of the works of the seven.

Nothing of the works of the seven did they do,

and their form was not abased.

When Ruha saw them,

she strikes her head with her hands.

With her hands she strikes her head

and tears out the locks on her head.

Ruha in wickedness

calls her firstborn sons:

"Come, come, my firstborn sons,

hear what I tell you.

Some of you shall lay snares,

some of you cast out cords.

We will let loose lust and fire

into this world.

We will stir up wickedness among them

and let loose burning and torment.

We will make weapons,

and ... shall make the whole world stumble.

We will seize the stock of souls

and split it into separate parts.

We will call the disciples with an exalted voice

and grant them of our teaching.

Of our teaching we will grant them

and spread our works over them.

We will cast lust and chains into the world,

hinder the call of the Living God

and make it vanish from the world.

We will root out the sign of the Living God

and the baptism with which they were baptised in the Jordan.

We will set up the baptism of disgrace

and of the vain.

We will wipe out the Pihta, Kusta and Mambuha

and set up the sacrament of falsehood in the world.

We will seize the whole earth

and cast it into the blazing fire.

We will persecute the sons of the great stock of the Living God,

who rise above us.

All the Nasoraeans shall be made into our following;

we will set up for them the cup of almsgiving in excellent manner.

Those who rebuke us

we will afflict with persecution in the world."

As the seven stand and scheme,

Nbat, son of Johana, left his body.

The chosen one left his body

and strode swiftly through the ether.

The angel strode swiftly on,

until he came to the watch-house of Ruha.

When Ruha saw him,

the throne bent beneath her.

When the watchmen saw him,

the scourge fell from their hands.

The scourge fell from the hands of the watchmen,

the bell fell down from the bell-ringers.

The sorceries of Ruha were bound,

and her works were scattered in different parts.

Ruha, the Satan, spoke

and turned to the man of tested righteousness:

"How did you come from the earth,

and whither is your course directed?

Who was a guardian to you,

who brought you out of the world?

In whom do you trust,

and who was a redeemer to you?

In what place did you dwell in the house,

and where was your dwelling founded in the world,

that you practised none of our works

and did not submit to us?

How did you escape our snares,

how spring free of our fornication?

How did you spring free of our greed and heat,

how free of our blazing fire?

Who freed you from the darkness and brought you out,

which we have let loose into the world?

Who was a lord to you,

who a helper?

Where is your pure helper,

the man who was a guardian to you?"

As Ruha stands and speaks so,

the helper came flying.

The pure helper came,

who cried with a loud voice and let me hear.

He cried with a loud voice and let me hear

and let my heart rest upon its support.

Namrus, the mother of the world, turned to him and said:

"Who was now your Creator,

and how will you ascend to the light?"

Then I answered her:

"I was created from the light,

and my course is directed to the worlds of light."

Then she cried with a loud voice and shrieked,

and the scourge fell from her hand.

She cried:

"Except you, angel,

no one shall ascend to the light.

No one shall ascend from this world to the light,

they shall not ascend and behold the place of light.

The Nasoraeans shall not ascend

who wear a perverse garment.

The Nasoraeans shall not ascend

who bear witness for money and goods.

For money and goods they bear witness

and do not remember the name of Jawar.

They do not remember the name of Jawar

and give neither wage nor alms.

Neither wage nor alms do they give

and do not heal the wounds of the suffering.

They do not heal their wounds,

but give (their goods) away for fornication, adultery, corruption and harlotry.

They give them away for corruption and harlotry,

so they will be struck with seven blows.

With seven blows they will be struck

and fall into the watch-houses of the seven stars.

All souls that do evil

will become thin, like a hair on the head.

Whoever denies the name of the Living God

will die a second death.

A second death he will die,

and his form will become dark and not shine."

When Ruha spoke so,

the splendour of the pure helper rose.

The splendour of the pure helper rose,

and Ruha fell down from her throne.

From her throne Ruha fell down,

and he cast her down, struck her with the mace of splendour.

He cast her down, struck her with the mace of splendour,

he cast Ruha into her own snares.

Ruha he cast into her own snares,

and she turned her face to the great Suf-Sea.

She turned her face [to the great Suf-Sea]

and was not able to speak.

He seized me with seven secret words,

lifted me on high and set me up before my Lord.

He washed me with his washing

and strengthened me by his word.

By his word he strengthened me

and marked me with the pure sign.

He clothed me with a garment of splendour,

wondrous and endless.

He set upon me a pure wreath,

whose leaves shine.

He covered me with a turban

that was created from the earth of the ether.

From the earth of the ether it was created

and shines in a high degree more than the splendour of the sun.

They let me take my seat in their secret dwellings,

which were founded by my father Johana

when he departed from the world.

I beheld the form of the Great God,

which is wondrous and outstanding in the ether.

I beheld the great light,

beheld the dear lamp.

I beheld Hibil-Ziwa,

the man who redeemed me from the world,

redeemed me from the ugly.

He redeemed me from the watch-houses

that the seven created in this world.

He showed me the glory of the Great God

and taught me about the wondrous vine.

He taught me about Sar, the great vine,

which the Living God set in the dwelling of the great Jura, the treasurer.

He created a world of light for me

and founded for me a dwelling like his own.

He said:

"All souls that depart from here

and are worthy and deserving of the place of light,

all souls that depart

shall find a place in your dwelling."

And the Living God is victorious.
