Plain text of Fifteenth Book, Nineteenth Piece
A wonderful song of the descent of the soul.
In the name of the Great Living God
be glorified the exalted Light.
From the place of light I came forth,
from you, bright dwelling.
From the place of light I came forth,
and an angel from the house of the Living God gave me escort.
The angel who escorted me from the house of the Great Living God
held in his hand a staff of living water.
The staff that he held in his hand
was full of leaves of excellent kind.
He gave me of his foliage,
and orders of prayer and prayers were filled from it.
Again he gave me of it,
and my ailing heart found healing.
My ailing heart found healing,
and my soul, a stranger to the world, found relief.
For the third time he gave me of it,
and he lifted up the eyes in my head.
The eyes in my head he lifted up,
that I beheld my Lord and knew Him.
I beheld my Lord and knew Him
and made three petitions to Him.
I asked Him for gentleness
in which there is no rebellion.
I asked Him for a strong heart
with which great and small can be borne.
I asked Him for smooth paths
to ascend and behold the place of light.
The Living God is exalted and victorious,
and victorious is the man who has gone this way.
