Plain text of Fifteenth Book, Thirteenth Piece
In the name of the Great Living God
be glorified the exalted Light.
When I, Ptahil, was formed and came into being,
I came into being from the source of great splendour.
When my Lord made the plan and created me,
He created me from the source of splendour.
He clothed me with a garment of splendour
and covered me with a covering of light.
He gave me a great crown,
by whose splendour the worlds shine.
He said:
"My son! Up, go, betake yourself to the earth,
and make a condensation in the black water.
Condense the earth,
and divide in it rivers and canals.
Create and form the bodily Adam,
from whom the chosen shall come forth.
From him the chosen shall come forth,
and ascend and behold the place of light.
Go to the earth
and send out three calls.
With the first call condense the earth;
with the second call divide in it rivers and canals;
with the third call create the fishes in the sea, the feathered birds
in the firmament, and form all herbs and seeds.
Form the herbs and seeds,
each different from the other."
I set out and arrived
at the borders of the earth.
My eyes were filled with the black water.
To the knees I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
To the thighs I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
To the first mouth I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
To the last mouth I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
I spoke the name of the Living God and of Manda d-Haije over the water,
and the water did not condense.
Of the seven garments of splendour, light and glory
which my Lord had granted me, I threw some upon the water,
and the water did not condense.
The staff of speech and answered prayer I struck upon the water,
and the water did not condense.
What shall I do with the waters that consume one another,
since they will not accept the name of the Living God?
What have I done wrong against my Lord Abathur,
that he led and sent me here
to the depth, which is all stench,
in which no one can dwell,
to the waters that consume one another,
which will not accept the name of the Living God?
I ascended from the black water
and betook myself before Abathur,
before my Lord Abathur,
to report to him the secrets of this world.
When Abathur saw me,
he questioned me.
He said:
"What is the world like that you created,
and how have you prepared your works in it in perfect manner?"
Then I answered my Lord Abathur and said to him:
"You sent me to the world that is all stench,
in which there is no ray of light,
to the waters that consume one another,
which will not accept the name of the Living God.
To the knees I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
To the thighs I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
To the first mouth I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
To the last mouth I stood in the water,
and the water did not condense.
Of the seven garments of splendour, light and glory
I threw some upon the water,
and the water did not condense.
The staff of speech and answered prayer I struck upon the water,
and the water did not condense."
When I spoke thus to my Lord Abathur,
he stood in prayer and praise.
In prayer and praise he stood,
he bowed and praised the Living God exceedingly.
He ascended to the Living God
to report to Him on the works of this world.
[God] called the angel Hibil-Ziwa,
and sent him to the side of the stallion;
from it he took condensing matter.
Condensing matter he took from it,
and he came and gave it to Abathur.
Abathur wrapped it in his pure turban,
brought it to Ptahil and gave it to him.
He said to him:
"Go, condense the earth
and stretch out the firmament in perfect manner."
I rose from my Lord Abathur
and arrived at the borders of the earth.
I threw the condensing matter which my Lord had given me upon the water,
and the water condensed.
The first condensation measured 12000 miles,
and wings were made for it like a cloud.
Wings like a cloud were made for it,
and it flies and circles about in the world.
It is called Msunne-Kusta,
in which the men of tested righteousness are brought up.
The men of tested righteousness are brought up in it,
and they ascend and behold the place of light.
The second condensation measured 12000 miles,
which is called the earth.
With my first call I condensed the earth and stretched out the firmament
in perfect manner.
With my second call I divided in it rivers and canals.
With my third call I created the fishes in the sea and the feathered
birds of every kind and species.
I created the fishes in the sea
as food for Adam and all his sons.
They are also food for the souls
who dwell in the vain dwelling.
With my fourth call [I created] all herbs and seeds, each
different from the other.
Through my fifth call all evil creeping things came into being.
Through my sixth call the whole formation of darkness came into being.
Through my seventh call Ruha and her seven sons came into being.
Ruha and her seven sons came into being,
and they came and stood before me.
When I saw them,
my heart fell from its support.
I turned to the seven and said to them:
"Where did you come from, seven,
when your name was not in my Lord's house?
Where did you come from, seven,
when I had no intention of creating you?"
When the seven heard me,
they came together and buried themselves in one another.
When Ruha heard it,
she came and stood before him.
She said to him:
"We come to be your servants
and to obey you in every respect.
My sons and my tribes,
we stand as slaves before you.
Set up your dominion;
we will stand behind you as your slaves."
Then Ptahil answered and said to them:
"If you do good works,
I will count you to my party and care for you.
If you do not do good works,
you will be shut up in the place of origin from which you came.
If you do good works,
you will be called my sons in this world
and will order the works
over which my Lord has set me."
When Ptahil said this,
the house was taken away from him.
The house was taken away from him,
and he was put in heavy bonds.
He was bound with bonds
until the earth passes away.
For he turned aside from the word of his Lord
and did not hold to the word of his Lord.
He did what his Lord had not commanded him,
therefore he was put in heavy bonds.
A curtain fell down
between him and his Lord Abathur.
They hear each other's voice,
but cannot see each other's face.
They took the house from him
and put him in heavy bonds.
They sent the angel Hibil-Ziwa
to set this world in order,
to set in order the works
which Ptahil had called forth but not carried out,
to guard Adam and his wife Hawwa
and to keep them company,
to guard Adam,
from whom the chosen shall go forth.
From him the chosen shall go forth,
trade with the wages of charity and almsgiving and attain perfection.
Prayer and praise they guard,
lift up and set up in the house of perfection.
The Living God is exalted and victorious,
and victorious is the man who has gone this way.
