Plain text of Fifteenth Book, Twelfth Piece
In the name of the Great Living God
be glorified the exalted Light.
At the head of the pure wreath which the Great God sent,
He created a gentle angel.
He created the gentle angel
and raised him to the dwelling of the Great One.
He said to the gentle, steadfast angel:
"Gentle, steadfast angel!
Take strength in abundance
from the Living God, who is enthroned in His dwelling.
Like the pure crown
you are a crown upon our head.
Take abundant splendour with you
and light without end.
Take lights in your right hand,
and two angels shall come with you.
Sit in a sheltering cloud
with gentle, steadfast words.
Take with you of the prayers
that we offer.
Take with you of our enlightenment,
in which there is neither lack nor defect.
Go in the sheltering cloud,
and the two angels shall come with you.
Go to the men of tested righteousness,
in whom there is no lack and no falsehood.
Bring them the word of the Living God,
which is wide and endless.
Go to the men of tested righteousness,
the truthful, believing men.
Let them hear the call of the Living God,
that they may wake the sleepers.
Give them hidden words,
by which they shall be taught.
Teach them about the Great Living God,
as He speaks in His book,
with which the Living God urged on the Nasoraeans
who are in the world.
So let them clothe themselves in garments of splendour,
that they may ascend on the paths after you.
Grant them speech and answer to prayer,
that they may be freed from the wrath of the wicked.
Grant them of the grace
which the Great Living God has entrusted to you in His dwelling.
Grant them the wisdom of the ether,
that they may rise and approach the Mighty One with petitions.
Teach them about the beings of light
and the hidden dwellings in which they sit.
Teach them about the Great Living God,
teach them about the souls who are there.
Teach them about the wreath of the ether,
which is set upon the Great Living God in His dwelling.
Teach them about the Great Living God
and the angels who sit in mutual enlightenment.
Teach them about the gentle soul
and the three angels
who took it captive.
They took the soul captive
and brought it to the dwelling of the sinners.
The seven said of it:
"He shall be counted with us.
He shall be counted with us
and dwell with us in the world.
We will hold him back in the earth,
that he may not behold his Creator.
Let him not behold the great vine
of the men who stand here.
Let him not behold Him whose splendour blazes,
and to what His dwelling is like.
Let him not behold his parents
and not be resplendent in his garment.
Let him not behold the Great Living God,
let him not behold the souls who are here."
The gentle soul spoke
and taught all his kin:
"I am a solitary vine
that stands in the world.
I have no high support,
I have no nourisher,
I have no gentle helper
who might come and teach me about everything."
When the Great God heard the soul,
He created and sent a helper to it.
He covered him with abundant splendour
and with endless light.
In my right hand I brought a wreath,
in my left hand I brought a garment.
In my heart I brought the sign,
with the joy which the Great One granted me.
With the joy which the Great One granted me,
[I went to him.]
The soul departed from its body.
The seven did not notice,
after it had departed from its body.
Until the house of the Second,
the splendour of the soul did not go out of the house;
then it grew entirely dark.
Then the seven noticed;
now they all sit in mourning.
All sit in mourning,
and Ruha sits in confusion.
The sun left its splendour,
the moon left its brightness.
The stars left their stations,
the powers cast away their ornaments.
The planets cast away their armour
and in confusion strewed dust upon the head of Ruha.
The powers and rulers
fell down and fell upon their faces.
They fell down, fell upon their faces
and went to the great Suf-Sea.
They roam about the earth,
they seek the soul and do not find it.
They go to their father,
they seek the soul and do not find it.
The soul ascended to the house of the Great God.
When they saw it,
they fell down and fell upon their faces.
The soul said to the Living God,
who is enthroned in His dwelling:
"How have I sinned against You,
that I was sent to the dwelling of the sinners?
They took me into their vintage,
away from the Great God in His dwelling,
from the midst of the souls
who come from the treasure of the Mighty One."
When the Great One saw the soul,
over which He had given commands,
He received it with exalted splendour
and set it up in His dwelling.
He created three angels for it,
to keep it company.
They shall keep it company
and light up its dwelling.
He created abundant light for it,
to light up its form.
He granted it grace,
rich and great in the place of light.
He created lights of splendour for it,
to light up the soul in its dwelling.
It bowed and praised
the Great Living God in His dwelling.
The angel Manda d-Haije gained the victory
and brought his friends to victory.
