First Piece

Enosh, the "word", goes into the world on God's commission, to rouse the believers, to teach and warn them.

In the name of the great God

be glorified the exalted light. —

I am a word, a son of words,

who have come here in the name of Jawar.

The great (God) called, commissioned and equipped me,

me Enosh, the great angel, the son of the mighty.

He called, commissioned and equipped me,

He made helpers for me.

The helpers whom He made for me

were gentle, firm angels.

He sent me out to guard the age,

to rouse the slumbering from their sleep and set them upright.

He said to me:

"Go, form for thyself a following from the Tibil

like the following that we have formed for ourselves.

Choose and fetch the chosen

from the world.

Choose truthful men

and women who are good and faithful.

Choose and fetch the souls

that are worthy and fit for the place of light.

Grant them teachings

by which they shall be taught.

Grant them secret sayings,

that they may show their wonder-working strength to the monsters here.

They shall speak to them with their pure voice

and cast Namrus down from her throne.

Fear shall seize the rebels,

the lords of this world.

Teach the Nasoraeans, Mandaeans and the chosen

whom thou hast chosen from the world,

who are persecuted in the Tibil in the name of God."

He says to him:

"Choose the chosen of Truth

and lead them up to the bright dwelling.

Choose them and make them firm,

that they be without lack and fault.

Instruct them in the prayers, hymns and orders of prayer,

that they may behold the savour of the light and be taught.

Teach the souls, that they die not and perish,

nor be held back in the dark darkness.

Let not Namrus destroy them,

nor let them be caught in the dwellings of revelry in music."

He says:

"When thou goest to the earth Tibil,

let the wicked not know of thee,

and let the radiance of thy garment not be darkened.

Let them not cast thee down from the upper firmament,

nor throw thee into the place of darkness.

Be not anxious and fear not

and say not: I stand alone.

If fear seizes thee,

we shall all be with thee.

We shall all go to thee

and be helpers to thee.

Helpers we shall be to thee

and free thee from everything ugly.

Teach the Nasoraeans, Mandaeans and the chosen

whom thou hast chosen from the world.

Speak to them of prayer and praise,

that they perform it in great number

and that it be without lack and fault.

Let them not perform the prayer by night and in darkness,

at a time in which the prayer remains hidden.

Those who do not perform the prayer at its time

will be bound at the gate of the House of Life.

They will be bound at the gate of the House of Life,

until the gate of the House of Abathur is opened.

When the great gate of the House of Abathur is opened,

prayer and praise will ascend to their place.

Prayer and praise will ascend to their place

and be hidden in the place from which they came.

Whoever does not perform prayer and prostration at their time

will be put to the test in the House of Abathur.

He will be put to the test in the House of Abathur

for the useless things that he practised in this world.

My chosen ones! I will speak to you of the several mysteries

which Namrus has distributed over this world.

I will speak to you of the evil poison

which Namrus cast among the great people of God.

She cast among my disciples

hatred, jealousy and discord.

My chosen ones! To you I call and say

that you shall not commit the transgressions of Namrus, of the .....

and of the seven rebels.

Whoever commits their transgressions

will die in the fetter of black water.

Whoever practises their works

will be swept away by the sword and the sabre of the rebels.

He will be swept away by the sword and the sabre of the rebels

and burned in the consuming fire.

His name will be torn out of the House of the great God,

and he will find no share in the light.

Whoever walks in the faith of the Ekurs (idol temples)

will boil in seething cauldrons.

Whoever drinks wine in the tavern,

him they will saw asunder with saws of ......

Whoever lies with his wife and does not wash with water

will find his place in the belly of the Leviathan.

Every woman who does not wash with water

will receive blow upon blow.

The keeper of the light will strike her,

and she will be cut off from the place of light.

The pure name will curse her

and the vein of living water that is endless.

If anyone, when his wife has washed after the uncleanness and

lies with her already on that first day, [menstruation,]

his name will be cut off from the House of the great God;

they will leave him standing in mists of darkness.

They will leave him standing in mists of darkness,

and his eyes will not see the light.

Whoever eats of the food of the twelve gates

will vanish from the world. —

Far be it from the light

to desire a share in defilements.

Yes, at the end of the last age there will be among the priests those who are without zeal and dignity, without reason and order, and in whom the purity of the Jordan has found no place.

Until the fifteenth year of life the father will be called to account for the sins of his children, if he has not called to them with a warning voice, has not roused them from sleep, has not taught them prayer and praise, has not let them walk the paths of Truth and of faith to the place of light.

When the fifteenth year of life comes, the children will be called to account for their own sins.

Whoever delivers his daughter to the twelve gates,
