Plain text of Twelfth Book
In the name of the great God, let the name of N.N. and of my wife N.N. be established among the mighty angels, the sons of light.
First Piece
I am the great Enosh, son of the great Seth, son of the great Adam, a servant of the mighty ones of glory, a son of the place of light, a son of the leaves of all knowledge. My feet led me up here. In the place of rich radiance I sit. I reflect and speak, I look and see this world, the heaven and the earth, the sun, the moon and the stars of the rising and the setting of the heaven, the light in which I stand, and the power in which they stand. By whose power do they stand, by whose light do they shine?
I opened my eyes and raised my brows, then I looked and saw a great brazier of radiance, which lies firm in the hand of angels. Twelve angels draw it on the Mountain of Darkness under the great bridge of radiance. They carry it up and bring it to the gate of the realm, to the place where for the angel who built heaven and earth by God's command a throne is set up.
Again I opened my eyes and raised my brows, then I looked and saw a great gate that was opened in it (in heaven). A thousand times a thousand beings of radiance stood at its right and ten thousand times ten thousand at its left. A radiant being came forth from the House of Life, whose radiance was forty-two times as great as that of the greatest of the angels. When I saw that radiant being, my body shook and trembled, and my feet did not stand firm on their support. I fell down before him. Then an angel of radiance rose before him, took me by the palm of my right hand, set me upright before him and said to me: "Come, great Enosh, son of the great Seth, son of the great Adam, servant of the mighty ones of the House of Glory, son of the place of light, son of the leaves of all knowledge, come, I will reveal to thee about the great God. It is written here and laid down on the great mountain ...........
Come, I will reveal to thee about this heaven, which the children of men called heaven, while it is no heaven. Clouds of mist it is, which Abathur founded by the command of God and in the name of the one who built heaven and earth.
Come, I will reveal to thee about the stars that shine on it. They are twelve angels. Some of them are set over the east of heaven and earth, some of them are set over Sheol and the darkness. As they are here, so they are there.
Come, I will reveal to thee about this earth, which the children of men called [earth], while it is no earth. It is rather water from Hus, the great sea ........ Year by year and month by month it runs and flows on and makes a course for the children of men.
Come, I will reveal to thee about this relay that rises at dawn. Some rejoice over it, some are grieved over it. Its head is pure light, (it is) like an unmarried man, a merchant, forceful, brave, vigorous, and stands in the great time. A great mast of radiance is set up in it, ropes of light are laid in it. Twelve angels draw it and lead it on the Mountain of Darkness under the great bridge of radiance. They carry it up and bring it to the great gate of the realm, to the place where for the builder of heaven and earth a throne is set up.
Come, I will reveal to thee about the relay that rises by night. Its head is pure water, (it is) like an unmarried man, a merchant, forceful, brave, vigorous, and stands in the great time. A great mast of radiance is set up in it, ropes of light are laid in it. Twelve angels draw it and lead it on the Mountain of Darkness. They bring it to the great gate of the realm, the place where for the builder of heaven and earth a throne is set up.
Come, I will reveal to thee, my brother: These men of tested righteousness who are here in the Tibil go, when their measure is full, from this world to that place. They seek and find. From prayer and from the treasure of life, from their prayer and their praise, they clothe themselves with radiance and cover themselves with light. Garment upon garment they put on, with light upon light they cover themselves. They laugh, rejoice, leap, flourish and delight. And we say: "God stands firm and established in His dwelling; God is victorious over all works."
Second Piece
First alphabetical psalm.
In the name of the great God
be glorified the exalted light. —
Come in goodness, Truth,
light, that goest to the house of thy friends.
Thou art the chosen, the victorious,
who makest thy whole people firm in victory.
Thou art a perfect treasure,
chosen one, without fault.
Thou art the way of the perfect,
the path that rises to the place of light.
Thou art life from eternity,
who wentest and tookest a place in every truthful heart.
Woe to him who does not hearken to thee, my lady,
and whose path leads through the dwellings of revelry in music.
Thou art the weapon of the perfect,
the truth without error.
Thou art wise and pleasant,
teaching wisdom and praise to all who love thy name.
Blessed is he who hearkens to thee, my lady,
and walks the paths behind thee.
Thou art the day of joy,
on which there is no mourning and lament.
Thou art a crown of victories,
set around the head of the enlightened.
Thou art the tongue of praise,
who daily praisest God.
Thou art the first vessel
that God made.
Thou art the light of the great,
who wentest and camest into the world.
Thou art the remedy
that heals all who love thy name.
Thou art the eye of the men of tested righteousness,
that daily looks up to God.
Thou art a sweet fruit,
of a taste that brings no death.
Thou art the first companion,
the planting that came from the House of Life.
Thou art the first sound
that God made.
Thou art the chief of the treasurers,
to whom God gave dominion over every thing.
The dead heard thee and revived,
the sick heard thee and recovered.
Through thee God forgives the chosen and perfect,
in whose heart Truth has taken a place. —
God is victorious, and victorious is the man who has gone hence.
Third Piece
Second alphabetical psalm.
I longed for the dwelling in which the gentle dwelt,
and my heart is chosen among the chosen.
A chosen one am I, I walk
in the fragrance of life that surrounds me.
I am a stranger:
they have filled me with longing for the good Nasoraeans.
May He remember me before God, and may my friend be
my helper.
Our cause the good father [will plead],
who stands victorious before God.
I opened the seal of the Tibil
and saw every thing in it. I saw angels worthy of the bright dwelling.
A rose am I, a son of the chosen;
I beheld God, and God beheld me.
My provision for the journey comes from the stranger,
whom God desired and planted.
I shall come among the good,
whom that stranger loved.
Grace came to the good,
joy to the truthful man.
The radiance of God was,
when the soul came from the House of God.
Great upon me was the radiance of God,
and the light of God did not fail.
My heart praises God,
that God may count me among His number.
With the good I did
what God commanded me.
I shone in His light:
of His light He increased upon me.
He set upon me radiance and rich light,
that I might have a support.
The great God showed condescension
to all who love His name.
My mouth praises God,
that He may count me among His number.
I heard the call of the angels, my brothers,
I turned my eyes to them.
I rose with great strength,
I went and came to them.
With the sign of life marked me
my guides Silmai and Nidbai.
The truth of God
was twisted for me as a lock on my head.
The great God shows forbearance
to everyone who is marked with the sign of life. The good, the chosen and the perfect, in whom [Truth has taken a place].
God is victorious, and victorious is the man who has gone hence.
Fourth Piece
Third alphabetical psalm.
In the name of the great God
be glorified the exalted light. —
The pure pearl came,
which enlightened the dark hearts.
Radiance sought to be,
and light awoke and was.
I laughed at the rebels
and at what they devised and did.
I dwelt in their houses,
but the seven did not notice me.
Grace is granted to the chosen,
who loved God.
Woe to the rebels,
who devise evil against my chosen.
He is the first radiance,
the light without end.
It is the first life,
the life that was from of old.
Blessed is he who hearkens to thee
and walks on the path behind thee.
He was the great radiance,
when the soul came from the House of the great God.
He is the pure crown
that was set on Abel in his dwelling.
My heart longs for God,
that God may long for me in His dwelling.
From the day that Abel planted me,
my soul confessed the place of light.
Thou art the first rest;
because of thee the angels found rest.
The twelve gates look out,
but they do not ascend to the paths of Truth.
The depths of the Nasoraean faith
are wide and without end.
He is a sweet fruit,
of a taste that brings no death.
I heard the call of God
in the great place, the House of Perfection.
The call of the great radiance,
who speaks and recites in His dwelling.
He is the great sign
with which God is marked in His dwelling.
Whoever hearkens to the word of God
finds a place in the dwelling of God.
He is the lovely gate,
the light without end. —
And God is victorious.
Fifth Piece
Fourth alphabetical psalm. The doings and fate of the wicked and sinners.
In the name of the great God.
Naked the notable one left,
the deceased left the world.
His house stands waiting to be laid waste,
his property to be plundered.
The reproach of the creatures
falls to him in all worlds.
Thou art like bad vines
that bear no fruit.
Mute and deaf are they
who look out for evil for the children of men.
Woe to the evil day
that is kept in the world for the wrongdoers.
They sow transgression
and reap a harvest of lies.
Their heart is full of darkness,
and their eyes are blind and do not shine.
Error seized them,
and they do not behold the place of light.
They are a day of lament,
their soul a grievous sickness.
All twelve gates
are a pit that keeps them for eternity.
Their heart is divided in them,
and they do not ascend to the light.
They are clothed with sins
and rob souls.
Their soul is dulled in them,
and they have no desire for their wives.
They are the poison of murderers,
who murder the children of men.
Depths of water are they,
whirlpools that bring drowning.
Their mouth is full of lies,
and their eyes look out for evil.
Dry are their fruits,
which they sow in the world.
They stand outside of Truth
and do service outside of grace.
They love the beauty of the body
and the darkened shadows.
Full of dregs and rottenness
their soul stands in the world.
They are the gate of death
and kill the children of men. —
And God is victorious.
Sixth Piece
A description of the world of darkness and its king, the counterpart to the description of the world of light and the King of Light in the first book.
In the name of the great God.
To you I call, I teach and I say, you truthful and faithful men, you who see, you who are set apart: Separate yourselves from the world of lack, which is full of unrest and error.
First I taught you about the King of Light, who is praised for all eternity. I spoke to you about the praised worlds of light, which are imperishable, about the angels, the Jordans and the dwellings, which are wondrous and shining. Now I will speak to you about the worlds of darkness and their contents, which are ugly and terrible and whose form is not right.
Outside the earth of light, below, outside the earth Tibil, to the south, lies that earth of darkness. It is of a form that is different from and unlike the earth of light, for they differ in every property and form. The darkness exists in its own evil nature, howling darkness, desolate gloom; it knows neither first nor last.
But the King of Light knows and understands first and last, past and future. He knew and recognised that the evil one is there, yet He would do him no ill, in accordance with what has been said: "Do no ill to the evil one and enemy until he himself has done ill." His evil nature exists from the beginning and for all eternity. The worlds of darkness are wide and endless. It was said: "Wide and deep is the dwelling of the wicked, whose peoples showed no faithfulness in the place where their abode is endless, whose realm is of themselves. Their earth is black water, their height dark darkness."
From the black water the king of darkness was formed by his own evil nature and came forth. He grew great, mighty and powerful, he called forth and spread a thousand times a thousand evil generations without end and ten thousand times ten thousand ugly creatures without number. The darkness became great and wide through the demons, devs, jinn, spirits, hmurthas, liliths, spirits of temples and chapels, idols, archons, angels, vampires, goblins, spirits of ill, demons of the stroke, monsters, net- and lock-spirits, satans, all the ugly shapes of darkness of every kind and sort, male and female from the darkness: dark, black, clumsy, unruly, angry, raging, poisonous, rebellious, foolish, rotten, hideous, filthy and stinking. Some among them are mute, deaf, stopped up, dull, stammering, hearing-less, confused, without knowledge. Some among them are insolent, hot, violent, sharp, quick-tempered, lustful, children of blood, of kindled flame and consuming fire. Some among them are sorcerers, forgers, liars, deceivers, robbers, crafty ones, enchanters, soothsayers, fortune-tellers. They are masters of all wickednesses, instigators of distress, they commit murder and shed blood without pity and mercy. They are artists in all ugly things, know languages without number and understand what is before their face. Of every kind they are. Some of them crawl on the belly, some glide in the water, some fly, some have many feet like the worms of the earth, some carry a hundred ...... They have molars and incisors in the mouth. The taste of their trees is poison and gall, their sap is petroleum and pitch. That king of darkness took on all the shapes of the children of the world: the head of the eagle, the body of the dragon, the wings of the eagle, the sides of the tortoise, hands and feet of the monster. He goes, crawls, glides, flies, screams, is insolent, threatens, roars, whistles, winks and pipes. He knows all the languages of the world, yet he is stupid, confused, his thoughts are hindered, and he knows neither first nor last. Yet he knows what goes on in all worlds; he is of many kinds. He is greater than all his worlds, he is mightier and more extensive than they all, he is stronger than all his creatures. When he wishes, he hides from them that they do not see him, but he knows what goes on in the heart of the one who stands before him. When the generations flee from him, he brings them back by his word; the devs he wishes he makes return and sets before him. When he wills, he extends his shape; when he wills, he makes himself small. He draws in his limbs and stretches them out again, and he has the parts of men as of women. He perceives all secrets. He rages with voice, word, breath, spirit, eye, mouth, hand, foot, strength, poison, wrath, speech, fear, anxiety, terror, trembling, roaring, so that all worlds of darkness are terrified. His shape is ugly, his body stinking, his face distorted. The thickness of the lip of his mouth is 144,000 miles. By the breath of his mouth iron boils, and rock is heated by his breath. If he lifts his eyes, the mountains quake, at the whispering of his lips the plains are shaken.
He reflected within himself, took counsel in his foolish heart and considered in his cunning mind. Then he went up and beheld the worlds of darkness, which are wide and endless. He took on pride, exalted himself over all and said: "Is there anyone greater than I? Is there anyone who is a match for me? Is there anyone greater than I, more extensive and excellent than all worlds? Is there anyone whose food is mountains, in whose belly no blood is found? Should there be anyone more powerful than I, I will rise to battle with him, rise to battle with him and see whence his strength came."
He hid himself and beheld the worlds of light from afar at the borders of darkness and light: like a fire on the summit of high mountains, like stars that glimmer in the firmament, like the splendour of the sun when it rises and comes from the east, like the moon in its brightness. He saw the shimmer of that earth of light like burning lamps which, covered with glass vessels, shine outward.
He reflected within himself, fell into anger, raged with great violence and said: "If there is this world, what use to me is this dwelling of darkness, whose furnishing is ugly and terrible, whose food is black water and filth? I will rather ascend to this shining earth and make war with its King. I will take the crown from him, set it on my head, and become king of the height and the depth." He said further: "If it is a garment, I will put it on; if it is food, eat it; if it is a drink, drink it; if it is a house, tear it down; if it is a building, destroy it; if it is a dwelling, dwell in it; if it is something stronger than I, begin a quarrel with it."
He burned with fire, glowed in his mind, heated himself in anger and wanted to devour all worlds. But his ways are confused, his roads blocked, his paths winding. Nevertheless he reaches in a moment beyond the end to the lower border of the darkness. In the journey of one day he covers a way of a hundred years.
When he beheld that shimmering shape, he wanted to swing himself up and rise from the howling, desolate darkness to that shining shape. But he found no gate to enter by, no way to walk on, no ascent to climb up by. For that shape which he beheld was on high, while he was in the depth, as men, beasts and cattle cannot ascend to the height of heaven. He heated himself and glowed, like the greedy lion over the prey, and did not rest or repose in his own dwelling. He screamed, neighed and whistled loudly. The worlds of light heard the voice and beheld the form of the dull demon. The frail host gathered. They looked and regarded one another like a body whose limbs suddenly began to tremble, and resounded like vessels of bronze.
Then a voice went out from the exalted King of Light, and He said to the worlds of light and the dwellings of the angels: "Remain quiet, you angels, sitting in your dwellings. Be not afraid of the wrath of the dull, evil demon, who has fallen into anger. In his own container he shall be held fast. He shall be held fast in his own container, all his plans shall come to nothing. His plans shall come to nothing and his works shall not be accomplished."
Life to our knowing ones, life to our understanding ones. Praised be God; God is victorious.
Seventh Piece
In the name of the great God.
This is the instruction and revelation which was revealed to the men set apart, who have separated themselves from the Tibil and the works of the deceivers.
See what I tell you about the worlds of light and what is in them. I have taught you about the world of darkness and its creatures. I have spoken to you of the exalted King of Light, whose power is wide, mighty and endless, of the praised earth, of the angels and kings in it, who dwell in the upper height outside the Tibil in the north, at the place from which the living water comes, by which all worlds flourish, whence comes radiance to the sun, brightness to the moon, shimmer to the stars, glow to the fire, whence come the north air and the pleasant wind, the king of all winds; through it all beings live and feel well. If the air should not blow for even one day, all souls that are in the Tibil would die and be extinguished.
If you say that hail and wrath come with the north wind, I explain to you that they do not come from the earth of light. Rather, in the uppermost earth of the Tibil wide mountains are cut. Snow and hail come, fall upon them and do not melt in winter or summer. From there the north wind comes, blows over them, and the hail comes together with the wind, as when someone stands near a decaying corpse and the smell comes along with the wind.
The stars and the signs of the zodiac circle and do not go at the gate of the north. For there is nothing dark there that needs illumination. It is like an earthly king who sends an army into a territory far from him. For the lights of this world, which are charged with giving it light, have no radiance of their own.
All the world calls the north "height" and the south "lowland". For the worlds of darkness lie in the lowland in the south. The great ocean encircles the whole Tibil, except the gate of the north. For one cannot cut off the living water from the place of light.
All the world testifies that the living water comes forth from beneath the throne of God, but they do not understand what their mouth speaks.
The other winds, the hot winds, which circle between the walls and break forth between the gates, blow over the ocean. For the ocean is hot and the water is hot. At the lower mountains the breath of the ocean comes out and melts their snow. For the ocean is very near to the worlds of darkness, the black water, for the black water is very dark and the living water is small, for into that falls the outpouring of all seas. No one drinks of it, as it has been said:
It is the black water,
that boils, seethes and writhes.
Whoever drinks of it dies,
everyone who treads on it is burned.
No one can bear its smell,
unless he is from it.
These zones are distributed over the Tibil.
Every man of understanding knows that the beings of light are not here. See: they are not on the Tibil and not in the firmament. For, were they in the firmament, where would their abode be when heaven and earth pass away?
For as to the place of the King of Light, there was nothing when He was not, and there is nothing if He is not; for Him there is no passing away.
Darkness gained the upper hand over the children of men on all roads and confused the paths. As it has been said: Thou hast confused the way of the world, and its inhabitants lie there and are tossed to and fro between the waters. The more the age declines, the more wickedness oppresses [them].
Take heed and let yourselves be taught, my chosen ones, and ascend victorious to the place of light.
And God is victorious.
