Plain text of Eighth Book
May forgiveness of sins be granted to me, N, my wife, N, my father, N, my mother, N.
In the Name of the great, unseen God.
Hear me, my Lord, hear me,
raise me up, O Great One,
our Lord, Source of life.
This is the mystery, the writing and the instruction with which Manda dHaije instructed the men of tried righteousness and all the tribes of Adam.
When Adam and his wife Hawwa were there, the Deceiver went down to the lower earth Sufath and to the lower Abaddons of darkness. The Deceiver brought from the demon Zamur a scheme of filth, and plotted. She said: "Days, months, hours, moments and times shall come in which the men of tried righteousness are killed and hindered (here), so that none of them ascends to the light. Only Hibil-Ziwa will ascend, to bring enlightenment and praise from the light."
This mystery the Deceiver proclaimed and devised. But then Hibil-Ziwa came, by God's leave, raised the white olive staff, struck the water and said: "For what the Deceiver has proclaimed and devised, there shall be a time, but also an interruption. On the tenth day, on the fifteenth day, on the twentieth day, at the (full) month, at the half month, the men of tried righteousness shall not be killed and hindered."
Then Jorabba said to the Deceiver: "For everything that you have created, Manda dHaije sets an interruption." Then the Deceiver said to Jorabba: "There is something I want to create, by which all the worlds shall be taken captive and the disciples shall become apostates."
Then the Deceiver went and made the drum, song, banquets and apostasy, she made horns and pipes, by which all the worlds are taken captive. Then she went, stepped before Manda dHaije and said to him: "I will eat seven portions and you eat one portion, and in the portion that you eat I also want a share."
Then Manda dHaije answered her: "O you blind one, blind in the heart, deficient one, whose eyes do not behold the light. How will you eat seven portions and I one portion, and why should you have a share in the portion that I eat?"
She answered him: "Mine are the Nasoraeans who take on arrogance in the possession of money and goods, who drink wine to song, harp and flute, who sit at banquets while the ground is shaken before them, who fall into my captivity, do not name your Name, Manda dHaije, give no alms and do no good. These I bring to a fall already in this world and cast them into the torment of this world."
Then Manda dHaije said to her: "Those who act so may be lodged in your dwelling. When I want to create Uthras, I create them from the great, white Jordan of life."
Manda dHaije calls to the Uthras and the disciples and says to them: "To you I call, you sons whom I have raised. To you I call, you plants that I have created from the midst of the peoples, tribes and tongues. My sons! Let yourselves be spurred on by my speech, so that you are not held back in the howling darkness. For I spur you on and make you steadfast in this
world. For I know in my mind that, the more the age declines, the more wickedness oppresses you. But remain upright before me, so that I may deliver you from the persecution of the seven planets. Give alms, call the call of truth, clothe the naked with garments and wrap with coverings. If there is a Nasoraean who cannot give the whole alms, let him give half the alms. Let him stretch out his hands in truth before me, and I will reckon it to him in full on the earth of light."
Further I instruct you, you men of tried righteousness, about all that is with Jorabba, and about the angels who are with him: Z'hir and Zihrun, B'bir and Bihrun, Tar and Tarwan, Sar and Sarwan, Nsab and Anan-Nsab, about the youthful boy who sits before him in his chariot, and about the two bands of light that are laid around his head; the name of the one is Zihan, the name of the other Z'ha-Zihan. Jorabba says to them: "Who is able to overcome the call of truth, which has sounded from of old?" And to the Deceiver Jorabba says: "The call of truth still sounds in the world. The call of truth still reaches my ear. As long as the call of truth sounds in the world, I hear the murmuring of Hibil-Ziwa." But I say: "Hibil-Ziwa has not yet departed from his age."
Further I declare to you, you men of tried righteousness: "Whenever a struggle takes place on the earth of light and the air in the world lights up, understand well in your mind: for your sake darkness and light struggle with one another, and he shows marks and signs in the firmament. Do not be afraid of him."
Further I declare to you, you men of tried righteousness: "Protect yourselves, your sons, your wives, your descendants, your bread and your water, and you need not fear him. For the great Jordan of life and Silmai and Nidbai are still here. For if these guardians were not here, the earth would be overturned, and Jorabba would succeed in casting it and the firmament down upon one another, like a ship that sails on the water. Indeed, three times a day he sends a call to the sun from the house of Abathur: once at the prayer of the dawn, once at the prayer of the seventh hour, once at the prayer of the evening. Let yourselves be instructed and do not fear him.
When you rise from sleep and wish to perform the prayer, do so when a gleam of brightness becomes visible. Then pray at the seventh hour. Then, when you wish to perform the evening prayer, perform it while the rays still stand. The one who covers the rays also receives your prayers and keeps them in the treasure-house of the mighty God."
Life to our knowing ones, life to our understanding ones, life to the men who instruct us. God stands firm in His dwelling, truth is victorious.
