Plain text of Fifth Book, Second Part
In the Name of God, the Great, the First.
The splendor and the light of God has risen, and Manda dHaije, the Knowledge of Life, has been revealed to put all the worlds to shame. He overthrew all the idol-worship of the house and brought discord among all the lords of this world. When they saw the splendor and the light of Manda dHaije, and the splendor and the brightness with which the men of tried righteousness were clothed, the thrones of their gods collapsed under them. Their ranks were about to fall upon their faces, and they stood there ashamed.
All the worlds that saw him fell down and fell upon their faces. They do not open their eyes and are not able to behold the sign and the likeness of the great God.
But when the men of tried righteousness saw him, they were set upright by God and filled with Him, and God was established in their minds.
Numbness seized the lords of the house, and they say to their god: "You are our likeness, and we are your likeness; if there is power in you, change your shape, otherwise we will go and join ourselves to the light of God." Then he answers them: "My shape it is, and it will not change in all eternity." Then they say: "Woe to us, that the works of our hands were without guilt, yet we are to be guilty."
Why do you weep, peoples and generations? Your heart clings to something that is not yours. Your kingdom is turned and is turning, and the splendor of your glory has collapsed upon you.
They rebel against their god, curse him and say to him: "Cursed be you, god, and the spirit that rests on Ruha." Their power departed, they were ashamed in their dwellings, lies and deceit were in the gates of their palaces. Darkness rose over the works of their hands, empty gloom is on their firmament. Their gods crouched down in shame on their way. Disgrace came abundantly over their temples.
They sat down to deceit and (false) wisdom, practise sorcery and cast it over the face of the earth. The false god came down from on high, took the form of angels, and the angels disguised themselves as demons. Day after day they twist the hearts of the children of men; they settle upon the necks of the priests, clerics and soothsayers, to eat their fill of their flesh and drink their fill of their blood. They speak in (false) wisdom and deceit and alter the times.
God revealed Himself to the world; the splendor and light of God arose.
When the sea saw it, it turned back,
and the Jordan turned backward.
The mountains leap like deer,
and the hinds in the steppe cast their young.
The heights speak like daughters of the clouds in honor.
The mountains open their mouth and offer praise,
and the cedars on Lebanon break down.
When the earth saw me, it trembled and quaked,
and when the king of the sea saw me, he turned back.
Sea, whom did you see that you turned back,
Jordan, whom did you see that you turned backward?
Mountains, whom did you see that you leap like deer,
hinds in the steppe, before whom do you cast your young?
Heights, before whom do you speak like daughters of the clouds in honor?
Mountains, before whom do you open your mouth in praise,
cedars on Lebanon, before whom did you break down?
Earth, whom did you see and quake?
King of the sea, whom did you see and turn back?
Islands of the sea, before whom were you confounded,
coasts of the sea, before whom were you terrified?
Before the splendor and the light of Manda dHaije, the splendor and the brightness with which You have clothed the men of tried righteousness. God poured Himself out over the water, and the islands of the sea opened their mouth and offered praise to the mighty, unseen God and said: "Your Name, O God, we did not name, and the fear of You we did not know."
This is the light of God that was revealed, and the men of tried righteousness praised it. Then Manda dHaije said to them: "I have come to dwell among you and to set you upright in the light of God. I have set you apart from the peoples and generations; I will set you upright in the love of truth, and you shall be truthful before me in the light of God.
The forbearance of God will not be granted to the lords of the house. The wheels of their chariots were thrown into confusion, and they raised their voice aloud on high. Like the voice of the man Himun, the worlds raised their voice aloud on high.
The Almighty uprooted the earth by His wonders in the house of the ...... and wrought His works in the house of the man. Their strength was cast down, their dominion departed from them, the kingship fell from their head. They sat on their thrones in numbness and said: "Woe, woe, that numbness fell on all worlds. Their time drew near, and they are about to come to an end at the end of the worlds."
God will abide on high, while the gates and planets will sink down to the depths of the earth. For the ages that surround the lower Sheol, their dominion has departed from on high. Their evil thoughts piled up upon their heads.
It is the voice of God from the fruits, the voice of the righteous from the light, the voice of the men of tried righteousness from the lower dwellings, who offer praise in the Name of God and say: "We knew death in the world. From the day when we conceived love for God and hated death, we trusted in You, O God, and because of Your Name, O God, we were persecuted in the world."
Fear and praise God, you men of tried righteousness, and God will rest upon you. You, men of tried righteousness, will be set upright; stand upright before me. Shine and give light; may my light rise over you. Then the faces of the men of tried righteousness will shine and give light more than the sons of Sam, the white fruit. The form of the men of tried righteousness will shine like the Life in which there is no mixture.
Woe to those who are wise in their own opinion, and whose cleverness stands before their own face!
Woe to those who say: we belong to God and God is with us, while God is not with them! They have forsaken, cut off, robbed their heart.
Woe to those who turn sweet into bitter and bitter into sweet!
Woe to those who call good evil and present evil as good!
Woe to those who turn darkness into light and light into darkness!
Woe to those who drink new wine in the morning and old in the evening and are captivated by song, zither and flute!
Woe to those who anoint themselves with fine oils and smell fragrant flowers, who grow soft in arrogance and in the Name of the great God and of Manda dHaije, who was among them, gave no testimony, who did not listen and hear, who did not set God upright in their minds, who in their arrogance were seized by affectation and who turned their face to the great Sea of Reeds.
Revere and praise, you men of tried righteousness, the One beyond the worlds, whom your eyes do not see, the Stranger from the worlds of light, who has no images or likenesses, who did not fall into the hands of the makers of works of deceit and did not name His Name and His form to the children of men.
This is the light of God, which ...... is cast down. To the wicked children of men their strength stood still, and speech became heavy in their mouth, so that they speak like stammerers.
This is the ancient splendor and the light that has been from of old. He shone and gave light with the light from the worlds of victories upon the form, the sign, the voice, the call, the enlightenment and the wondrous deeds of Manda dHaije. He appeared in all worlds, and all the false gods were terrified. They stagger over one another and say: "How can we praise Manda dHaije enough, whose splendor is more extended than that we could praise it, and whose light is richer than that we could glorify it. His first light became lasting, beautiful and victorious are his words of truth, and his splendor settled upon his friends."
Have trust in Manda dHaije. Like a good shepherd who [tends his sheep], he keeps from you every spirit of apostasy. Like a good shepherd who leads his sheep to their fold, he seats you and plants you upright before him.
Rejoice and praise, you men of tried righteousness. Calm your heart, humble your mind and keep yourselves apart from the wicked.
O you [men?] of truth, whose soul is truthful! A call rang out over the whole earth, the glory of every city went down. Manda dHaije, the Knowledge of Life, was revealed in Judea, a vine appeared in Jerusalem, before whom there is no transgression. He had no royal pride in his head, and he did not have the appearance of an idol-being. It is God who has been from of old, and the Truth that was at the beginning from of old.
Open your mind and praise sincerely. Why do you want to love sleep and stumble with the stumbling, like the first stumblers, who stumbled and did not stretch out their hands in truth before me?
Blessed are you, men of tried righteousness, whose locks of hair on the head are braided. Your merits are more wondrous than all worlds, and your face shines in joy.
O you who clothe yourselves with cloaks of various kinds, who are persecuted in the world but do not forsake [the faith?]; you I will clothe with splendor, your persecutors with shame and disgrace.
We trusted in God, we had trust in God, and Truth was in our company. We became great through the greatness of Your knowledge.
God arose in mercy toward you. Out of love for truth and righteousness I clothed and covered you with righteousness like a great breastplate of the earth of the ether. Out of the love with which you loved Manda dHaije, [a wreath of] victories is set upright on your head.
Come, make my Name great in the world and my praise in all worlds.
Then the light of God that was revealed ...... reward and almsgiving ...... Then your souls, you men of tried righteousness, will be in the light of God ......, and they will shine in pairs in mutual splendor. Your name [will be more wondrous] [than other names], your splendor will be more wondrous than other splendors, and your light will be more wondrous than other lights, each according to his works and his reward.
Let my Name be in your mouth. Bless and praise, in your going, your coming and your sitting, in your eating and your drinking, in your resting and your lying on your bed, the Name of God, whom you remember. He is to be praised, honored, glorified, blessed and established.
Further, make my Name great in the world and my praise in all works.
A call rang out over the whole earth, the glory went down in every city. Manda dHaije, the Knowledge of Life, was revealed to all the children of men and delivers them from the darkness to the light, from the gloom to the light of life.
Leave the empty wilderness and keep far and apart from the deceit and illusion of this world.
Do not be swept away because of your evil transgressions, and do not stumble away from the truth like the first stumblers, who stumbled and did not stretch out their hands before me.
Come, you great ones of tried righteousness, keep far and apart from the ravening wolves and the destructive lions who cause stumbling, who cause people among you to stumble.
Woe to those who walk about in the markets of the world, whose bodies are bowed and bent, while they have forsaken, cut off, robbed their heart.
Do not associate with the wrongdoers whose hands are stained with blood, who sit day after day on the thrones of rebellion and persecute the Name of God. Fire will blaze from their faces, it will destroy the place between their shoulders and punish them for their arrogance. They will be struck with their own blow, without my blow needing to reach them.
Truth is victorious, victorious is Manda dHaije and his helpers.
This is "the overthrow of all the idol-worship of the house."
