Plain text of First Book (2)
To you I say, my chosen, to you I teach, my believers: Give alms to the poor and be a guide to the blind. When you give alms, my chosen, do not proclaim it. If you have proclaimed it once, do not repeat it. If you give with your right hand, do not tell your left. If you give with your left hand, do not tell your right. Whoever gives alms and proclaims it, it is cancelled and not credited. (34) Whoever gives alms and does much good, but then abolishes the almsgiving and no longer gives, falls into the blazing fire until his sins are ended and all his offences are wiped out. (41)
My chosen! If you see anyone who is hungry, feed him. If you see anyone who is thirsty, give him to drink. If you see a naked person, put garments and wraps about him. For everyone who gives, receives, and everyone who lends, receives payment. For everyone who gives alms, the great almsgiving will be a support. Whoever clothes the naked with garments, for him garments and wraps will be laid about his neck. Whoever frees a captive, to him a messenger of life will come out to meet him. (42)
Whoever lets himself be enlightened and taught, for him helpers will be provided. Whoever calls the call of life, his building is firmly built and established. Whoever lets himself be enlightened by my praise, his name will be remembered daily in the place of light. Whoever lets himself be enlightened by my words will be numbered there among the righteous in the Garden.
Whoever frees himself from the unfaithfulness of the wicked will ascend without sins and offences and behold the place of light.
Everyone who, out of love for his Lord, gives his body to be slain is pure of sin, without blemish. (45)
To you I say, my chosen, to you I explain, my believers: Fast the great fast, which is not a fast from the food and drink of the world. (74)
Fast with your eyes from winking, and see and do nothing evil. (76)
Fast with your ears from listening at doors that are not yours. (78)
Fast with your mouth from wicked lying speech, and do not love falsehood and lie. (77)
Fast with your heart from evil thoughts, and let there be no hatred, jealousy or discord in your heart. Whoever harbours jealousy will not be called perfect. (79)
Fast with your hands from committing murder, and do not commit theft. (81)
Fast with your body from a wife who is not yours. (80)
Fast with your knees from the worship of Satan, and do not kneel before the images of deception. (83)
Fast with your feet from cunning walking after a thing that is not yours.
Fast this great fast and do not break it until you depart from your body. (85)
Whoever sins in his childhood, but then sins no more, reflects and transgresses no more, to him the forbearance of his Lord will be granted. He, the high King of Light, is compassionate, forbearing and merciful; He is a forgiver of sins and offences. (40)
Everyone who loves gold and silver and the possessions of this world and commits murder for them falls into the blazing, glowing fire. (46)
My chosen! Have no trust in the kings and rulers and rebels of this world, nor in military might, armour, battle, the hosts they gather together, and the captives they bring together in this world, nor in gold and silver. They stirred up strife and cast it away. They gather wealth and leave it behind in the world, then go and boil in the fire. With their hands they stir the coals, and with their lips they fan the blaze. Their scourge and their power of rule break down, and their splendour is shut off from them. Neither their gold nor their silver remains for them and becomes a support. Neither their money nor their goods become their redemption. Their dominion passes and comes to an end, and judgement is pronounced upon them. (87)
To all of you I say, you who listen to the word of God: when you stand and when you sit, when you go and when you come, when you eat and when you drink, when you rest and when you lie down, in all your actions, mention and praise the name of the high King of Light. (47)
Go to the flowing river and purify yourselves. Purify your soul with the living purification which I have brought you from the worlds of light, with which all the perfect and believers are purified. Say the blessing over the bread and eat it, speak the praise over the drink and drink it, that forgiveness of sins and offences may be granted to you. (48)
Everyone over whom the name of the King of Light has been spoken, who holds firm and steadfast to the purification and does good and beautiful works, no one will hinder on his way to the place of light.
Do not eat the blood of animals, nor a dead animal, nor one that is pregnant, nor one that has just given birth, nor one that a wild beast has attacked. Rather slaughter with the iron, wash, rinse, clean, cook and eat it. (57)
Do not eat and drink from the house of the twelve gates, for they are all full of uncleanness and abomination.
O you men who take a wife! Why would you take a wife from their midst?
Love and bear with one another, like the eyes that watch the feet. Love and bear with one another, and you will cross the great Sea of the End. For brothers in the flesh pass away, but brothers in truth endure. So be brothers in truth, who practise love in perfection. For the name of the First is invoked over you. Your sign is the sign of the living water, by virtue of which you will ascend to the place of light.
If you, my chosen, listen to what I tell you, if you do what I command you, I will grant you radiance from me in fullness and light from me without end. You will be resplendent in the house of life, as the righteous of light are resplendent in the place of light.
If you do not listen to what I tell you, if you do not do what I command you, you will sink down into the darkness into which the wicked sink, without ascending.
Blessed is he who heard and believed; woe to everyone who wrapped himself up and lay down. The good, who heard and believed, ascend victorious and behold the place of light. The wicked, who heard and did not believe, turn their faces toward the great Sea of the End.
My chosen! Keep away from the rebels of the vain dwelling. Day after day they sit on the thrones of rebellion, they sit on the thrones of rebellion, and with the whip they carry out their works. They carry out their works with the whip, and there is no faithfulness, gentleness or peace in them.
Do not take on the pride of fault, and do not commit offences with gold and silver. Whoever takes on the pride of fault, his name will be cut off from the place of light.
When someone departs from his body, do not weep and do not raise lament and wailing over him. Do not eat funeral bread over him. Everyone who weeps over a dead person will be set in streams of water when they are full. Whoever tears his garment at the neck will keep the flaw in his garment. Whoever pulls out his hair over the dead will be shut into the mountain, the mountain of darkness. (49)
Go, you poor, wretched and persecuted ones, and weep over yourselves. For as long as you are in the world, your sins increase.
If you grieve for the souls who depart from your midst, extinguish discontent and sorrow from your heart and keep mourning and lamentation away from your doors. For from mourning and lamentation, demons are formed. They run ahead of the souls on the way and trouble them at the house of the toll. If you long for them and love them, then make supplication to God, prayer and praise for them, recite hymns, read orders of prayer and give alms in their memory, that the Great One may be merciful to them. Radiance will then go before them, light will follow them. Messengers of life will be at their right, angels of light at their left, and they will be delivered from the watch-houses and the boiling cauldrons. (50)
Teach the souls, that their heart may not stumble. Let them hear gentle words and the praise which I have brought you. May they hear and testify, and may their heart find rest on its support.
Give bread and water and shelter to the poor and persecuted children of men, to whom persecution draws near.
Walk the ways of truth, and let the wage of the hired labourer not stay overnight with you. (51)
Do not rob your partner and do not deceive your friend. Whoever robs his companion and partner, his eyes will not behold the light. (52)
Give one another the right hand, and do not make your oath of fidelity a lie. For the angels and righteous of light grant one another covenant and oath of fidelity. (53)
O you chosen and perfect! Be humble and modest, that you may be called chosen, faithful and believing. Love one another in faithfulness and carry your love to perfection. Be gentle and modest toward the excellent teachers who teach you the right wisdom. Do not exalt yourselves over them, lest you attach a blemish to your soul. (54)
Do not go to the soothsayers and the Chaldeans of lies, for in darkness they will be lodged. (55)
Do not swear false oaths and do not twist your oaths. (56)
Do not consume interest and compound interest, lest you be condemned in the dark darkness. (58)
Do not commit fornication and do not be unchaste; do not sing and do not dance. Let your heart not be captivated by the song of Satan, which is wholly full of sorcery, deception and seduction, which twists the mind of the perfect and makes the heart of the believers stumble. (59)
My chosen! Be on your guard and arm yourselves, that you may be called the armed ones in the world. Stand firm in the world and bear the persecution of the world until your measure is full. Be a support and help to one another, and to the perfect to whom persecution draws near. (60)
When your temper boils in anger, calm it and hold down your heart. Accept the word of your Lord. For the mind of the wrathful, who is filled with the wrath of Satan, is drawn to modesty by right wisdom and faith. Whoever does not let himself be drawn to modesty by faith will be cut down by sword and sabre. Cut down he will be by sword and sabre, and he falls into the blazing fire. (61)
If you see a good man who has learned wisdom, draw near to him and accept from him of his wisdom. If you see an evil man who is wise to evil, keep away from him, accept nothing of his wisdom, do nothing of his works and do not walk on his path. (63)
O you believers and perfect! Whatever is hateful to yourselves, do not do to your neighbour. (65)
My chosen! Do good works and provide provisions for your journey. See, hear and believe, and accept the word of your Lord.
See with your eyes, speak with your mouth, hear with your ears, believe with your heart, practise with your hands almsgiving and benefaction, and act according to the will of your Lord; but do not act according to the will of Satan. (66)
Have no trust in the beauty of bodies, for suddenly they perish. Walk according to the word of your Lord, that you may ascend victorious to the place of light. Show to the high King of Light submission, reverence and praise, that your sin and guilt may be forgiven you. (67)
Do not worship Satan and the deceptive images of this world. For everything that is born dies, and everything that is made with hands perishes. The whole world comes to an end, and its false divinity passes away. (83)
My chosen! Have no trust in the world in which you live, for it does not belong to you. Trust in the good works that you do. When you depart from your body, you can rely on the works of your hands. (86)
My chosen! Show no contempt for the commandments that your Lord has commanded. Show uprightness, gentleness and modesty, which are of the nature of light. Show forbearance, compassion, reconciliation and mercy, which are of the nature of light. (88)
O you men who take wives, O you women who come to husbands, O you men who take wives! Beget and bear children. If you beget and bear none, bear the sickness on the bed. But I will teach you about the ugly deeds that women commit: every woman who commits fornication, every woman who commits theft, every woman who practises sorcery and oppresses the soul in the body: a deed that is not acceptable to God and not beautiful for men. For it is like the grievous sicknesses for which there is no healing. (92)
Do not take as wife a slave woman who has not been freed, and so do not bring your children into a master's house. For on the day when the servant fails and the heart of the master is angry with him, your children will suffer harm. If you take a wife who has been freed, then take abundant goodness, overflowing and plentiful. (93. 94)
Receive faithful love from a wife in whom is faithfulness. Do not turn away from one another until your measure is full. For whoever betrays his wife, in whom there is no fault, lie or deceit, and loves and pursues the lust of Tibil, judgement will be pronounced upon him. (95)
When you receive children and they stay alive, then, as soon as they understand knowledge, teach them the right wisdom and let them walk the way of truth. If you do not instruct and teach them, you will be condemned in the court of judgement. If you teach them but they do not wish to learn, they will be called to account for their own sins. (96)
If someone turns away once from the right faith, raise him up again and support him. If a soul turns away a second time, raise it up again and support it. If a soul turns away a third time, raise it up again and support it. Let it hear the scriptures and words, the prayer and praise of your Lord. If you support it, but it will not be supported, then pull out the bad vine, bring a good one and plant it in its place. Because it was called into his ear but he would not hear, it was shown to his eye but he would not see, it was pointed out to him but he would not look with his eye, he shall come to an end on the Day of the End. He falls into the torment into which the wicked fall, without coming up. (97)
When you see people who are afflicted with a bodily defect, show no contempt for them and do not laugh at them. For only bodies formed of flesh and blood become contemptible through sufferings and infirmities, but the soul does not become contemptible through sufferings and infirmities. The soul becomes contemptible only through ugly deeds that it commits. (98)
To you I say, my chosen, to you I teach, my believers. Do not praise the Seven and the Twelve, the leaders of the world, who travel by day and by night. For they lead into transgressions the tribe of souls, which was transferred from the house of life to this place. (101)
Do not praise the sun and the moon, the illuminators of this world, for this radiance is not theirs. It was only bestowed on them to illuminate the dark dwelling. They are servants of the perishable house, subject to the command of God.
Do not praise the sun by names that belong to God alone, nor by the other hidden names not revealed in the world. (102)
God chose a people for Himself and established a house of worship for them. The place Jerusalem is built, the city of the Jews, who circumcise themselves. They turned away from the first teaching and made for themselves a "book" of their own. (103. 104)
To you I say, my chosen: do not side with those servants who have turned away from their Lord. Do not mingle with those among the Jews who do not stand together in one word. (105)
From the children of Adam all peoples and creeds have gone forth. (106)
False prophets arose who go about in lie and deception. They are born of women and take the form of men. They bring forth false wisdom from their hearts and cast an enchantment over the world. They claim divinity for themselves and set themselves up as "messengers." They write a book of deceit, set up warnings for the people, and make them perform false prayer. Lust, desire and passion they cast over the face of the earth, and they call themselves prophets. (107)
I, the first messenger, teach and say to all the Nasoraeans (the believers) who are now and who are yet to be born: Do not listen to their speech and do not stray from the way of life. My chosen! Do not side with those who do not stand together in one word. Know from their speech that they accuse one another of lying. One king reviles another king, one prophet calls another prophet a liar. They summon the children of men, make them greedy for gold and silver, money and goods, fill them with desire and lead them astray. (108)
Some of them take people captive through song, dance and lust. Some of them lead them astray with images of gold and silver, with carvings from a block of wood, with idol-shrines of clay and other vain works. (108)
Some of them oppress people with sword, sabre, blows, war, battle, fear and terror, frighten them, command them, and make them, against their will, slaves of the planets. (109)
Some of them lead the children of Adam astray through humility and flattery, through sweetness and cunning, through craft and deception. They put the name of God into their mouths and say to them: These are the books and words that the Great, the Exalted has given us. They mix among them words by which the souls of the people are hindered and perish. They twist their hearts and cast folly into the world. (110)
I, the pure messenger, say to you: Do not listen to the speech of the false prophets, who present themselves as prophets of truth and make themselves like the three angels who have gone into the world. Their radiance is no radiance; their garment is a garment of fire. Some of them are clothed in garments of darkness, covered with robes of gloom, and their smell is foul and stinking. (111)
To you I say, my chosen, to you I call and teach, my believers: Clothe yourselves in white and cover yourselves with white, like the garments of radiance and the robes of light. Put on white headbands like the resplendent wreaths. Gird yourselves with girdles like the girdles of living water which the angels bind about their waists. Put on split shoes and take staves in your hand, like the staves of living water which the angels carry in the place of light. (112)
O you believers and perfect! Say nothing that you do not know and that has not been revealed to you. For there is no one to whom the hidden things are revealed, except the Great, the Exalted, who knows and sees all. (113)
My chosen! Arm yourselves with an armour that is not of iron. Let your armour be faith and the truthful words of the place of light. (114)
Give one another good counsel, as you have been warned and instructed. As you see with your eyes, call with your mouth, hear with your ears, so do good and beautiful works with your hands. Do not be like the bad plants that drink water and bring no fruit to their Lord. (115)
My chosen! Behold, I have proclaimed to you the light, for which there is neither end nor number. I have proclaimed to you the darkness and the blazing fire. I have proclaimed to you Satan, who is without strength or firmness and cannot save himself from the consuming fire and the blaze. (116)
This is the first teaching, which was given to Adam, the head of the living race. It was one word and one testimony.
Then the world is cut down by sword and plague. It is decreed for the souls that they depart from their bodies at that departing. And these souls ascend to the light without sins and guilt.
Then there remain Ram the man and Rud the woman; they are called the heads of the age. Then the world is raised anew from them, and the world multiplies.
For Adam the man it was decreed to live a thousand years. From Adam the man to Ram and Rud there are thirty generations. They all ascend together to the light, because they stand in one teaching, walk in one word, and bear witness in one praise. (118)
Then the world is cut down by fire. There remain Surbai the man and Sarhabel the woman. All souls depart from their bodies at that departing and ascend to the light, because they do not falsify the first teaching and do not twist the first word. (119)
Then the world is raised anew and multiplies. From Ram and Rud to Surbai and Sarhabel there are twenty-five generations. (120)
Then, after Surbai and Sarhabel, the world is cut down by floods of water. There remain Noah, of the Ark, and Shem, the son of Noah. The whole world is cut down by water, for it is written for them that the souls depart from their bodies at that departing and ascend to the light. (121)
From the age of Surbai and Sarhabel to the age of Noah there are fifteen generations. (122)
From Noah the man the world will multiply, and they will bear witness in one call and one praise. And I shall proclaim a word, I, the messenger of the Living God, and the two angels, my companions. (122)
From Noah the man until the place Jerusalem is built there are six generations. It stands in bloom for a thousand years. (123)
Then King Solomon, the son of David, is born and appears, and he becomes king of Judah and mighty ruler over Jerusalem. The jinn and demons are made subject to him by God's leave and go according to his command. (124)
Then a false messiah appears among the Jews. He calls to the planets, makes them his party, and each one fights for him. (125)
The seven demons, the deceivers, lead astray all the children of Adam. The first is Shamish by name (the sun). The second is Libat (Venus), Amamit by name. The third is Nbu (Mercury), the lying messiah, who falsifies the first praise. The fourth is Sin (the moon), Saurel by name. The fifth is Kewan (Saturn), the sixth Bel (Jupiter), the seventh Nerig (Mars). (126)
The demons of the house of Shamish give their worshippers gold and silver and fullness of belly. He sends messengers out into the world, and they lead the children of men to the worship of sun and moon. (127)
The demons of the house of Libat let loose upon the children of men delusion, adultery, fornication, lewdness, passion, song and sorcery. (128)
The demons of Nbu, the false messiah, fall upon the children of men by stealth. They spread among them, take them captive from their houses and their families, carry them off to mountains and plains, and make them sit for them. The demons torment the children of men. They take the bodies captive and torment mind and soul. For them there is neither medicine nor healing. He himself appears to his worshippers in the fire and says to them: "See how my radiance has risen over the world." They do not know that it is not his radiance. He spreads folly in the world. (128. 145)
The demons of the house of Kewan cast lamentation, weeping and false wisdom into the hearts of men and tear them away from grace. (129)
The demons of the house of Nerig fall upon the children of men, flay them, cut their flesh and pour their blood upon the earth. They are called flayers, priests and oracle-men. (130. 160)
The false messiah also reveals himself in another form. He is clothed with fire, wrapped in fire, and shows wonders in the fire. Amunel is his name, and he calls himself "the Saviour." His dwelling is on fire, and he shows his chariot in the fire. He steps before you and says to you: "Come, approach me, you will not burn." But do not believe him, for he goes about in sorcery and illusion. (131)
When he presses you, say to him: "We belong to you." But in your heart do not acknowledge him, and do not fall away from the word of your Lord, the high King of Light. For the hidden things are not revealed to the lying messiah. (132)
He says: "I am a god; my Father sent me here." He declares to you: "I am the first messenger, I am Hibil-Ziwa, who have come from on high." But do not acknowledge him. For he is not Hibil-Ziwa. Hibil-Ziwa is not clothed with fire, and Hibil-Ziwa does not reveal himself in that age. Rather Enos-Uthra comes and goes to Jerusalem, clothed in a garment of rain-clouds. In human form he walks; neither burning nor fury is in him. (133. 135. 149)
He goes and comes in the years of Pilate, the ruler of that land. Enos-Uthra comes into the world with the power of the high King of Light. By God's leave he heals the sick, makes the blind see, cleanses the lepers, raises up the crippled and those who crawl on the ground so that they can walk, makes the deaf and dumb speak, and brings the dead to life. He wins believers among the Jews and shows them: there is death and there is life, there is darkness and there is light, there is error and there is truth. He turns the Jews to the name of the high King of Light. (136)
Three hundred and sixty believers go out from the place Jerusalem. They bear witness to the name of the Lord of Majesty. Enos-Uthra then ascends on high and is taken to the company of the righteous, hidden from the eyes of the children of men. Then the place Jerusalem is laid waste, the Jews go into exile and are scattered into all cities. (137)
To everyone who remains in that last age and goes out to the river with the call, the power and the proclamation, angels will come out from the place of light to meet him. The Nasoraeans who wrap the headcloth about their heads will be worth generations and worlds to me. Upon every believer who remains in the truth, the blessing of God will rest. So listen and hear and be instructed, my chosen, that you may ascend victorious and behold the place of light.
The Living God is victorious over all works.
