Plain text of Book Three · Sixty-first Piece
Whom, and whom have you followed,
O soul, in the world?
The men whose guidance you followed
were not of the world.
More than you, sun, they are widespread,
more than you, light, they shine,
lamps of light are they,
that shine in the world.
When you searched, you followed the way to the First,
the Living God, who was from of old.
You went on to the Fourth,
where lack and fault were.
Lack and fault are there,
there are secrets and signs,
there is the wrath of the world.
When I saw it, I went away,
despised and left them all.
I left [them all]
and followed the guidance of the Knowledge of Life.
May God set you apart from evil to good,
from the wickedness and distress of this world. —
The Living God is exalted and victorious,
and victorious is the man who went this way.
