Plain text of Book Three · Fifty-seventh Piece
I hear the voice of a soul,
that speaks from the dwelling of the wicked and from the depth of the darkness.
It says:
"Woe to me, that my gold and my silver would not let me
send good works ahead of me.
My gold cast me into Gehenna,
my silver brought me into the depths of the darkness.
My precious stones and pearls, my companions,
what wickedness they taught me!
My money and my goods, my companions,
.......... and are lost.
My song and my delight
became snares and chains for me.
Snares they became for me and chains,
my form is bound in every respect."
It says:
"The wicked led me astray,
and I loved worldly desire.
Worldly desire I loved,
and my heart made me think of every evil.
My heart made me think of wickedness,
and my tongue made me stumble through lies."
The Knowledge of Life spoke to me,
the messenger of all the lights:
"O soul! When I called you, you did not answer.
Now that you call, who shall answer you?
Since you loved gold and silver,
you shall be shut up in the innermost pit.
Since you loved dream and deceit,
you shall fall into the cauldrons while they boil.
Or else, when your offences are settled
and all your sins are ended,
you shall ascend by the ascent
by which the perfected ascend.
If your sins are not settled
and all your offences are not ended,
you, soul, will die a second death,
and your eyes will not behold the light." —
I and the angels, my companions,
shall ascend and behold the place of light. —
Blessed be the Great Living God,
and blessed be His name in the place of light.
