Plain text of Book Three · Fifty-sixth Piece
My measure is full, and I go forth,
a knowing one, who learned from the watchful.
From the watchful I learned
and dwelt in the world.
and I heard the word [of my Lord].
The man who was set over me
let me hear the word of the Great Living God
and set me apart from the world.
He granted me praise
and made me a stranger to the world.
I became a stranger
to the wicked and the sinners.
I devoted myself to praise
and praised the luminous dwelling.
I praised the wide place
and the angels of light without number.
My measure was full, and I went forth,
the Seven stood in my way.
They shut the gates before me,
to hold me on the way.
The wicked say of me:
"Let us cut him off and leave him with us."
Then I lifted my eyes on high,
with my soul I looked toward the abode of life.
Life answered me from the fruits,
radiance answered me from afar.
The Great Living God showed Himself inclined
and sent the servant of the Living God to me.
He sent the man to me,
who let me hear his voice.
He opened the doors and came,
split the firmament and revealed himself.
He opened the doors and came,
he opened the gates before me
and removed the Seven from my way.
He clothed me with radiance from himself
and covered me with light from himself.
He gave me a wreath of radiance,
and my form shone more than all the worlds.
The planets stand there,
whisper and say:
"When he was among us,
when he dwelt among the works of our hands,
when he dwelt among us,
he did not listen to our word.
Now that his measure is full,
his form shines more than all the world."
Then I spoke and said
to the wicked, who have condemned themselves:
"I did not belong to you.
I did not practise your works
and was not counted among you.
I did not utter your name
and did not speak your speech.
I was no Chaldean,
no soothsayer and no prophet."
"Why do you whisper, you Seven?
The servant of the Living God spoke,
and I heard the word of my Lord.
The man who was set over me
let me hear the word of the Great Living God,
and I set myself apart from the world.
He sent me a wreath of radiance;
the Seven were defeated, and I prevailed.
In the radiance of my Lord I go on,
in the radiance of the man who was set over me.
I flew and went on
until I came to the man of the scales.
I came to the man of the scales,
who weighs works and reward
and joins the spirit with the soul;
he set me up in the scales.
A soul, a ...... loosed for me the fold of the garment of life,
and they supported me upon the likeness of life. —
Life supported life,
life found its own. —
Praised be the Living God; victorious is the Knowledge of Life, and those who love his name.
