Plain text of Book Three · Thirty-ninth Piece
Is Truth good for the good,
and the Knowledge of Life for the sons of salvation? —
While they are still in their body
and seek to enlighten themselves by the name of the Living God,
they say:
"When will it become dark, when will it become light?
When will the measure of the world be full?
When will the good come out of the evil,
the sweet out of the bitter?
When will life come out of death;
when will life rise up before its Lord?
When will the bitter herb be laid aside
that the soul had to carry in this world?"
"Even if it does not become dark, even if it does not become light,
the measure of the body will soon be full.
Even if Truth does not come here to the good
and the Knowledge of Life to the sons of salvation,
and the light does not come out of the darkness
and the good out of the evil,
the sweet does not come out of the bitter
and life out of death,
life does not rise up before its Lord
and the soul of the living to the sons of salvation,
and the bitter herb is not laid aside
that the soul had to carry in this world,
you will nevertheless be set up and made firm
in the place where the good are made firm." —
And praised be the Living God.
