Plain text of Book Three · Thirty-eighth Piece
The sound, the sound of a sound,
of two voices I heard,
the sound of two voices (of two),
who sit there and enlighten one another.
The voice of the spirit and the voice of the soul,
who sit there and instruct one another.
The spirit speaks to the soul,
the spirit speaks to the soul:
"By your life, my sister,
take me with you when you go."
"How shall I take you with me,
when you are a lying spirit?
You are a lying spirit,
you invent what you have not seen.
How shall I take you with me, my brother,
when the man of the scales stands erect?
The man of the scales stands erect
and weighs works and reward.
Works and reward he weighs
and joins the spirit with the soul.
When he weighs someone and he proves full weight,
they raise him up and grant him a support in life.
When he weighs someone and he does not prove full weight,
his case is settled for him right there."
"Take me with you
to where the scales are set up.
Then let them put me on the scales,
bring works and reward in.
If they find me full weight in the weighing,
let them join the spirit with the soul.
If they find me wanting in the weighing,
let them cut me off behind you. —
How good you are, my sister, soul,
that you took me with you when you went,
to where the scales are set up,
which weigh works and reward.
They found me full weight in the weighing,
and they joined the spirit with the soul."
How the soul rejoices
that they joined the spirit with the soul! —
Life supported life,
life found its own.
And the Living God is victorious.
