Plain text of Book Three · Thirty-seventh Piece

Though still young, my measure became full,

though still young, my departure took place;

though still young, my departure took place,

away from this world.

How foolish are the ages,

how simple are the worlds,

how foolish are the ages,

that they sit in mourning for me.

In mourning for me they sit,

and for me they lie on mats.

Those who lament die,

those who lie on mats are slain.

They eat,

they do not behold the place of light.

If you do not lament,

if you do not lie on mats,

then, when you call me, I shall answer you quickly.

I shall speak before you,

when I bring you the garment of radiance

that comes from you, great Jordan.

If you lament,

if you lie on mats,

then, when you call me, I shall not answer you.

I shall not speak before you,

I shall grant you no garment of radiance,

I shall grant you no resplendent wreath.

On the day of your departure

you will be bound in the house of the toll-keepers. —

The Living God is exalted and victorious,

and victorious is the man who went this way.
